THE COURIER-JOURNAL, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1994 C3 TIPSHEET New TV station is coming, bringing 'NYPD Blue' with it KEN NEUHAUSER TOM DORSEY TV-RADIO CRITIC Louisvl lie-area viewers will be able to see "NYPD Blue," starring David Caruso, left, and Dennis Franz, on WFTE-58 next month. out there that nobody sees because there's isn't space to put it on." That includes programming WDRB owns but can't show because it has been squeezed off the air by Channel 41's commitment to the Fox network lineup. WFTE has also picked up "Time Trax," "Babylon 5" and "Kung Fu," now seen on WBNA-21. In addition, Channel 58 is looking at new weekly series like "Lonesome Dove" and "RoboCop." Dorkin is considering affiliating Channel 58 with the new Paramount TV network, which wouldn't pre-empt as much air time as Fox does on WDRB. Affiliating with Paramount would automatically give WFTE the rights to "Star Trek: Voyager," the next "Star Trek" series due from Paramount a year from now.

In other changes, WDRB will pick up "The Jenny Jones Show" in August, probably airing it at 1 p.m. after "The Ricki Lake Show," which Dorkin says has done well. WLKY changes Monday is moving day for "The Young and the Restless" on WLKY-32. The popular CBS soap now seen at 12:30 p.m. will be on at 4 p.m., beginning Monday.

"The Ber-tice Berry Show," which was shown at 4, is being moved to 10 a.m. Geraldo Rivera goes to 9 a.m. "The Montel Williams Show" takes the 12:30 slot. People in the Louisville metropolitan area will be able to see a new over-the-air TV station March 15. WFTE-58, which is owned by Salem, dairy farmer Tom Led-ford and licensed to that city, will be programmed and operated by Louisville's WDRB-41.

The new station's tower will be atop Channel 41's antenna in the knobs of Southern Indiana. Its signal won't be as powerful as WDRB's, but "everyone in the area should be able to get a good picture," according to John Dorkin, WDRB general manager. Dorkin says that while contracts haven't been signed, he expects cable companies in the area to carry the station. The arrival of Channel 58 means that area viewers will be able to see ABC's "NYPD Blue," at least 20 Cincinnati Reds baseball games and some Indiana University basketball contests. Coverage of those teams was bumped off WDRB by Fox network programming last year.

"NYPD Blue," which WHAS-11 pre-empted because it said the police series didn't meet community standards on sex and violence, will be seen starting March 15 at 10 p.m. on Channel 58. With the show already starting reruns because of earthquake damage to production facilities, ABC (and WFTE) can't yet say what episode of "NYPD Blue" will be shown March 15. But WDRB-41 will show the first two episodes of the series at 11 p.m. on March 13 and 14 so viewers can familiarize themselves with the characters.

Viewers also will be able to see many of the missed "NYPD Blue" chapters on summer reruns. If WHAS doesn't opt to pick up the ABC show next fall, WFTE will. WFTE will be competing against WDRB for viewers, but the new station opens additional avenues of programming and advertising for Channel 41. Channel 58 will be on 18 hours a day, but a complete program schedule won't be available for about two weeks, although some programs have been lined up. "The programming on Channel 58 will be different from WDRB's so we don't program against ourselves, such as having kid's shows on at the same time," said Dorkin.

"Channel 58 will be a mix of movies, series and sports," Dorkin said. "There's a lot of programming The best bet: Drama at ATL Chilean playwright Ariel Dorf-man's thriller "Death and the Maiden" opens with a preview performance at 8 tonight in the Pamela Brown Auditorium at Actors Theatre of Louisville, 316 W. Main St. It will open officially at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow and continue through Feb.

26. The play takes place during the aftermath of the fall of a dictatorship and the formation of a democratic government. Paulina is a happily married woman. However, unbeknownst to her husband, she had been arrested, tortured and raped years earlier by members of the old dictatorial government for smuggling citizens across the border to safety. One evening her husband's car breaks down.

He is given a lift by a passerby, who later drops by the couple's home and is invited to spend the night. The passerby turns out to be the person responsible for Paulina's torture and abuse. What happens next? I won't tell. Tickets are $9 to $30. Call (502) 584-1205.

'Saved' onstage Creation Theatre Group also has decided to go the drama route this week. Its production of Edward Bond's "Saved" will open at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the Martin Experimental Theater at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. Additional performances will be at 8 p.m. Friday, 2:30 and 8 p.m.

now watch Winfrey and the soap will have to choose. "I hope they'll choose and I think they will," said Matthews. Imago altering Tim Daly, who plays one of the nice-guy brothers on NBC's "Wings," has been taking villainous roles lately in an apparent attempt to avoid being stereotyped as a goody-goody. He's at it again tonight in "Dangerous Heart" at 9 on USA (TKR-33) CQ. It's an intriguing yarn with a unique romantic touch.

Tom Dorsey'8 column appears Monday through Thursday in the Features section. Why all the changes? Because Channel 32's 5-7 p.m. news block took a big hit in the November ratings after it lost "The Oprah Winfrey Show" lead-in at 4 o'clock. Channel 11 outbid WLKY for Winfrey, who has delivered a huge audience to WHAS' newscasts. Berry's show, which made its debut last fall, resulted in a big ratings dip for WLKY at 4.

"Bertice Berry has a good program," said WLKY general manager Rabun Matthews, "but talk shows need time to grow and we just couldn't afford to wait for her ratings to catch up." Nobody's going to beat Winfrey, but Matthews' move is a smart one. It brings the large following "The Young and the Restless" has to the 4 o'clock time period. The black Russian terrier is descended from the Rottweiler, the giant schnauzer, the Newfoundland and the Airedale. The Russian dog-breeding situation mirrors the Russian political situation, says kennel owner Sylvia Hammarstrom: Breeders find it hard to put aside their differences for a common goal.

There are 93 kennel clubs in Moscow alone there are only two, by contrast, in the United States because none of the dog owners get along with each other well enough to join forces. COME, SIT, STAY, FLOSS: On this, the second day of Canine Dental Health Month, it is important to remember that the major cause of bad breath in dogs is periodontal disease. And if that isn't enough to worry about, veterinarian Dan Christian says, "Studies show that 90 percent or more of dogs 2 years of age and older now suffer from periodontal disease." It is important, too, to note that Christian is employed by Fris-kies, which sells rawhide chewy things that the company claims will prevent needless suffering. THE LOVE-LORN VLADIMIR ZHIRINOVSKY: The New Republic has the gritty details from Vladimir Zhirinovsky's 140-page autobiography, "The Last Surge South," which was published in Russia a few months before the election but has not been translated into English. The rightist Russian leader writes of a childhood of perpetual hunger, living with his mother in one room in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan.

She didn't want to ruin their "good relationship." Ann, too, want to protect my good relationship with my 10-year-old daughter, but that wouldn't stop me from sitting her down and having a long, serious talk about what she is doing with her life and the ramifications of casual sex. Too many parents today are reluctant to be parents. They fail to understand that it is their responsibility to set guidelines, make rules and provide structure for their children's lives. I have no problem saying no to my child, whether she likes it or not. When we have a run-in, I simply tell her, "That's tough.

We have one healthy, well-adjusted kid who is learning to make the right choices for herself. Dear Ann: For over two decades, I have enjoyed the ongoing war of the sexes played out in your column. However, none of the chronicles struck so close to home as that of "Sex-Starved Wife." Thanks to "Sex-Starved Wife," I finally know why. too, am middle-aged and overweight (25 pounds), snore and lack the stamina I had in my youth. Actually, I'm a warm, interesting, successful professional and a loving father. I spend most of my spare time with my kids and never miss a school concert or play. My wife, on the other hand, is a miserable, demanding person who yells at the slightest provocation and uses my weight as an excuse to shun sex.

I've had years of counseling on how to provide my kids with the love and stability they need to counter their mom's bitterness. She refuses to go. I suspect it's because she's afraid of what she might learn about herself. WAITING TILL THE KIDS LEAVE HOME IN L.A. Dear Waiting: You don't say SHOW CLOCK Creators Syndicate LEMME DOIT Dr.
