11 of gets a new TV duo for basketball Conrad, Dromo You'll see the familiar face of Dave Conrad when you tune in University of Louisville basketball games on WHAS-TV this season. Last season's of assignment went to two other members of Conrad's staff. Van Vance and Paul Rogers, but this time around Vin Burke decided that he wanted Conrad, sports director of WHAS radio and television. Conrad reports to Burke, vice president for news at WHAS. Burke chose Conrad to handle the play-by-play of last summer's Great Kentucky Shootout, a game between former players of of and the Uni versity of Kentucky.

Conrad enlisted former of coach John Dromo to help him. Burke liked the job they did. Dromo and Conrad had teamed once before, doing Kentucky Colonels games five years ago when Conrad was at WLKY-32. The Shootout marked the first time that Conrad had called a game in three years. I just hope that he and Dromo have calmed down a bit when they handle Saturday night's of L-Tennessee game from Knoxville.

They were rather hyper and loud during the Shootout. And Conrad usurped the authority of UK and of trustees, awarding degrees to several players who have not been graduated. I'm sure rustiness was to blame for their breathless state because both usually are unflappable. Said Burke: "Dave will do the games because he's the principal anchor on our station. We're putting our best guy on this because our top guy ought to do the biggies.

Dave is a top guy. Substantively we'll be strong. Dave Conrad is an articulate sports guy. His ability dovetails nicely with his recognition." Burke came to WHAS in July from ABC News in Chicago. Burke squelched a rumor that has been making the rounds at WHAS.

The report was that Conrad was given the attractive of assignment in an effort to boost his popularity vs. that of former WHAS sports director Cawood Ledford. Ledford broadcasts UK football and basketball over a multi-state radio network that includes WHAS. "There's nothing to that," said Burke. "Cawood is a legend in his own time." NOTABLE QUOTE Maryland coach Lefty Driesell, to The Washing-fort Post's John Feinstein, on North Carolina coach Dean Smith: "Dean's won because he's had the best players; that's all there is to it.

I get tired of hearing how this offense or that substitution won all these games for Carolina. Phil Ford won games. Mitch Kupchak and Tom LaGarde won games. Bobby Jones won games." Smith, in my opinion, is the game's top coach, and Driesell is the most overrated. WOODY'S TOP COACHES Best football coaches of all time? In this order, they are Knute Rockne, Vince Lombardi, Paul "Bear" Bryant and Bo Schembechler.
