12 FOOTBALL, pp. 2, 3 RACING, p. 5 BASKETBALL, pp. 1, 3, 4 IHlepirit Indiana Whacks Kansas State In Extra Period By GEORGE BOLINGER, Courier-Journal Correspondent Bloomington, Dec. 22.

Kansas State attempted to parlay a six-point lead and a four-minute stall into victory here tonight, but succumbed to Indiana's pressing defense and the height of freshman Don Schlundt in a tingling overtime 80-75. It was the young Hoosiers' fifth straight triumph. Kentuckiana Area Boasts Eight Of First 30 Top-Ranked Scoring Teams Among 156 'Major' SchooIs No other section of America can match the Kentuckiana area for excellence of collegiate basketball. i Eight of the first 30 "team offense" leaders lis'ted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association come from this neighborhood. Kentucky ranks 4th, Cincinnati 6th, "Western Kentucky 11th, Eastern Kentucky 15th, Xavier of Cincy 17th, Vander-bilt 20th, Indiana 27th, and Louisville 28th.

In addition, we have Murray's' great undefeated team down in Western Kentucky. Murray joined the N.C.A.A. this fall, but has been left off the list of 156 so-called "major" teams, presumably because the Thoroughbreds do not play major-classified foes. To qualify as a major, a team must play at least half its games against big-time opponents. i Princeton tops all majors at the moment in team offense, with Loyola of Chicago second and Duke third.

Princeton's Tigers have averaged 86 points a game, Loyola 85, Duke 83 and Kentucky 83. Cincy has chalked 82 a game, Western 77, Eastern 76, Xavier 75, Vandy 74, Indiana 74 and Louisville 74. r. Toledo Tops Eastern Five By 59-50 Maroons Bag Only 16 Baskets In 3d Defeat Special Th Courier-Joaraal Toledo, Dec. 22.

Eastern's Maroons suffered their third loss of the season here tonight as a smooth rolling Toledo University quintet, sparked by a 6-9 "rookie" senior, edged them 59-50 in a hard-fought thriller. The Maroons, as cold as the near-zero weather outdoors here, could score on -only 16. of 67 shots. Toledo's Ralph Carroll, big senior who has played very little in his collegiate career, won the game for the Rockets with his sensational play that even surprised his own coach, Jerry Bush. Trailed Only 43-41 Eastern, after trailing throughout most of the game, narrowed the margin to 43-41 with seven minutes remaining.

But here, Carroll, the "rookie" senior, decided to take over. In the remaining seven minutes, he pitched in eight- points to spark the Rockets. The Maroons struck to make the score 46-44, but Toledo was ahead to stay. Only two Easternites, Jim Baechtold and Elmer Tolson, showed any ability to hit the basket. Baechtold had 15 points to tie with Toledo's Phil Martin for scoring honors.

Tolson tallied 11. cold Maroon attack garnered only four baskets in the first 15 minutes of play in the remaining portion of the first half, the Maroons added three more field goals for a total of seven at intermission time. TOP Thrillers The Murray boys, under Coach Harlan Hodges, have been setting a dizzy pace and winning the tough ones in thrilling finishes. Against Houston, Charley Lampley sank a goal to break a deadlock and win 67-65. And against Texas the same fellow flipped a free throw after the game-ending buzzer had sounded to break another tie and give Murray the edge, 64-63.

A difference in classification of three foes would have placed the Thoroughbreds in the major group. They have 26 games on their schedule. Great Idea Dan Baldwin, manager of the Kentucky State Fair, is wondering if the folks of Kentucky, would like to have a "Sportsmen's Day" at the Fair; with free exhibitions of bait casting, fly casting, spinning, rifle marksmanship, and so on. It sounds wonderful to me.

Al Blum and his League of Kentucky Sportsmen would be delighted to sponsor it, I am sure. They could stage the finals, in the Junior Sportsmen's casting championship, a state championship finals in adult casting, as well as the professional exhibitions. NO YOU DO NT Male's Jim Cunningham (33) is hit from all angles as he goes in for a lay-up in the first quarter last night against Shawnee. Blocking his path (from left) are Ralph Riggs, Sherman Kolter and Alvin Burnett. Male won 54-40.

The sparkling floor play and shooting of little Howard Hovde and the goaling of big John Starkey' enabled Baylor to take command after 10 minutes of play and leave the court with a 33-29 intermission lead. 22 (Marquette stalled out the final five minutes to turn back Wisconsin 51-47 tonight in a warmly contested basketball game before 7,000 fans. The Hilltoppers began to play cautious ball after assuming a 45-40 lead halfway through the final period and the Badgers had to come out and meet them but were unable to catch up. The two tall Wittberger brothers, Russ and Grant, made all of Marquette's 15 points in the closing quarter. This produced a 51-42 lead with a minute to go. The Badgers finished out with five straight points.

Miami Wins 70-60 Miami, Dec. 22 (IP) The Miami Hurricanes shot into a long first-half lead, then withstood a Nebraska rally to defeat the Cornhuskers 70-60 in an intersectional basketball game here tonight. Billed as the No. 1 game of the nation, the contest started rag gedly, then settled into a titanic battle throughout the final per iods. The score was tied seven times and the lead changed hands nine times in the latter periods, before the Wildcats jumped into a commanding 70-62 lead.

No More Scoring Four minutes and 40 seconds remained, but Kansas State was finished on offense for regulation time, at least. Little Sam Esposito, 5-9 sopho more, hit from the side; then stole the ball twice and fed to Bob Leonard, who canned a pair of off-balance efforts to bring the Hoosiers within two points with almost two minutes left. Indiana fouled no less than five times in the closing sec onds, but K.S.C. refused all but the first one on a two-shot violation. John Gibson tried this one, but missed.

Miranda Connected Twenty-eight seconds remained as Sammy Miranda, the two- hand specialist who has been off scoring form lately, fired a 35-footer from the side. It hit dead center, then each team missed one shot as time ran out. Schlundt, who had tired late in the game, returned for the overtime. He took the tip, and Bob Masters drove hard for a score that put Indiana on top for the first time in 12 minutes. Wildcat pivotman Dick Knost- man, playing an inspired game for the visitors, hit a beautiful hook from the circle to knot it again.

But Schlundt grabbed a rebound at the opposite end and hit a blind shot over his head. With 3:40 left, Knostman hooked another two-pointer. In Front To Stay There was no more scoring for two minutes, then Schlundt stole away from his guard, took a long pass, and fired backwards to put Indiana in front to stay. Fouled intentionally, Knostman drew two free throws, but missed the first. It was 76-75, Indiana.

Miranda, who gave a dazzling demonstration of dribbling at Manhattan a year ago, put on another great one-man show to hold the ball for 51 seconds. Fin ally, he was fouled roughly, hit one free throw, and took the ball out of bounds. Esposito was fouled seconds later and also hit one toss, then took out of bounds. Schlundt capped the evening by going under unmolested for a cripple, to leave it at 80-75. K.S.C.

had taken the ball out of bounds five times during the fourth quarter; Indiana refused five free throws in the overtime. Schlundt Hit 28 Schlundt wound up with scoring honors, collecting 28. Knostman pressed him, garnering 26 despite being handicapped by an ailing foot. Leonard, who fouled out in regulation time, added 18 to the Hoosiers' total and Jim Iverson followed Knostman for K.S.C. with 14.

The Hoosiers got off 98 shots, although out-rebounded in the second half. They hit 29 for a .296 mark. Kansas State connected on 26 of 90 for a .288 percentage. The Wildcats sizzled at the free throw line, canning 23 of 29. Indiana now has beaten its Big Seven rival four times in five meetings, including a surprising triumph at Manhattan last season.

The Illini, rated third in the nation this week by Assocated Press sports editors, had to make up a 35-30 halftime deficit to keep their slate clean. Coach Harry Combes used a full-court pressing defense in the last half to harass the DePaul Blue Demons who had hit a .406 percentage of their shots in the first half. The press proved effective as the Illini stole the ball on numerous occasions to out-score the Blue Demons 21-11 in the third quarter and then go on to win. Illinois forward Irv Bemoras topped all scorers with 21 points. The Illini missed 18 free throws during the game.

With all the talk of over-emphasis of sports going on, it is hard to understand Baseball's hard-headed disregard of the wishes of the schools.
