5 THE COURIER-JOURNAL THURSDAY, MARCH 1M3 LOUISVILLE AREA DEATHS One killed, 14 injured when pickup hits van filled with commuters By GARDINER HARRIS Staff Writer A van filled with dozing General Electric workers from Springfield collided head-on yesterday morning with a pickup truck near Bards, town. One man was killed and 14 people were injured. The driver of the pickup Gary Rogers, 32, of Campbellsville died in the 4:48 a.m. crash on the new Ky. 245 bypass extension.

Elsie Miller, Rogers' aunt, said he probably was on his way home from work. Miller wouldn't say more. The crash occurred near a slight bend in the road a bend Rogers' truck never made, witnesses said. Police said that they weren't sure why the pickup drifted over the center line, but that alcohol doesn't appear to have been Involved. The 14 injured men were heading to GE in Jefferson County.

They have been commuting together for years, said Jerry Coulter, 44, one of the passengers. Seven were taken to University of Louisville Hospital, three by helicopter. The rest were treated at Flaget Hospital in Bardstown. Coulter said he was awakened by the van's driver, Glenn Devine, 52, who shouted something just before the crash. "When 1 woke up, I was looking straight ahead at the pickup," Coulter said.

The pickup plowed into the front passenger side of the van, several witnesses said. Thomas Crouch, 52, was asleep in the front passenger seat and was pinned by the crash. He had to be extracted by rescuers and was in serious condition last night at University Hospital. Few of the men were wearing seat belts, said Francis Taylor, 44, and many were thrown about the inside of the van. Richard "Buddy" Smith, 55, was thrown into the front of the van on impact and was taken to University Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

He was in serious but stable condition last night. James Medley, 50, managed to get the van's side door open after the impact, and seven or eight of the men stumbled out on their own, Taylor said. Medley limped over to the guardrail without realizing that his leg had been broken. He was later flown to University Hospital, where he was in fair condition. The other men suffered moderate injuries, Kentucky State Police said.

"I thought the guys up front would be hurt a lot worse than they were," Taylor said. Most of the injured GE workers live in Springfield, Coulter said. They make the 90-minute drive each way because they want to live in the country but they like their jobs at GE. Rogers is survived by his wife, Linda. The funeral will be at 2 p.m.

His first book, "Men on Bataan," was published in 1942 and gave his observations of the war. "The Wall," about the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto by the Nazis, came out in 1950.

On Friday, a fire developed in the dlescl engine of a Ford F-350 in Steuben County, and about two weeks ago fire broke out beneath the dashboard of a 1987 model F-150 pickup near Anderson, Frank said. The truck involved in Saturday's fire was a 1985 model with a gasoline engine, investigators said. Patti Gasper, 33, of Bluffton, told police the fire broke out after she switched gas tanks in the dual-tank truck. State Fire Marshal Gene Goddard said yesterday that an independent laboratory has been hired to help determine whether a pattern exists with two other fires involving Ford pickups.
