16 'Women's Room' helps Carter-Mondale By JOAN HANAUER NEW YORK (UPI) "The 'Women's Room" was the most watched program on network television last week, which was a victory for women's lib, a swipe at the male ego and a warning to that audiences won't watch reruns indefinitely. It also was a lucky break for the Carter-Mondale campaign. ABC beat its rivals in the Nielsen gratings decisively for the week ending 14, in what should have been the first week of its new season. CBS and ,5 NBC did not plan to begin their new until Sept. 15, even before Hollywood actors' strike put new programing on hold.

Advertisers pleased The televised version of Marilyn French's novel captured 45 percent of the viewing audience. Considering the feminist, anti-male slant to the show, it suggests that the audience drew That's Entertainment The Salina Journal THE AMERICAN LEGION 142 S. 7th 825-5610 SEPTEMBER ANNIVERSARY BIRTHDAY DINNER Free to Legion Members or Auxiliary Members with Birthday or Anniversary in the Month of September. largely from women in the 18-49 age group. That's the audience advertisers are most anxious to reach. The pulling power of "The Women's Room" proved a bonanza for the Carter-Mondale ad campaign, which had a four-minute commercial tagged onto the end of the show. "The Women's Room" coattails helped Carter-Mondale draw 30 percent of the viewing audience into watching its paid political ad. The Carter-Mondale ad buyers also struck it rich by coattailing part one of ABC's "Pearl" mini-series repeat, again walking away with 30 percent of the audience.

Ed Clark, the Libertarian candidate, tagged onto CBS's "Anatomy of a Seduction" Tuesday night for a 28 percent share of the audience. The best Reagan-Bush could do was tag onto the third episode of ABC's "Pearl" for a 27 percent share of the audience, and Reagan-Bush suffered a disaster with a five-minute spot on NBC following "A Man Called Sloane." Dewhurst and Patty Duke Astin, played against a solid schedule of reruns on its rival networks. Possibly the natives are getting restless about repeats. The audience certainly was enthusiastic about NBC's "Shogun," and that audience was swelled if only slightly by the efforts of Japanese diplomats in New York.

One NBC executive received a call Tuesday from Hiroshi Ota of the Japanese Embassy, who said he and other members of the Embassy were holding "Shogun" viewing parties for American friends. By the end of the first evening, the Americans were saying "domo" before departing, which "Shogun" viewers know means "thank you."
