TME COURIER-JOURNAL, THURSDAY. JANUARY 2), K-3 MARILYN BECK Lead-actress nomination is sought for Cher for 45 and Dime' role HOLLYWOOD Expect a sudden shift in the campaign for Cher to earn Oscar recognition for "Come Back to the 5 and Dime. Jimmy Dean. Jimmy Dean." Emphasis will move from supporting-player to lead-actress category. "All of a sudden there seem to be dozens of contenders for a supporting-actress nomination." she says. "I know a lot of worthy contenders are going to get cheated. "and I don't want to be one of them. "The studio has been campaigning to get Sandy Dennis a leading-actress nomination for "Jimmy Dean. but when you think about it, I did have more lines than she did in the movie." Cher says she agrees with most of the industry that no one has a chance besides Meryl Streep for "Sophie's Choice" in the best-actress race, but. as Cher notes, "just a nomination would be enough. I want one so badly, I'd kill for it." Even without an Oscar bid, she will be ever grateful to "Jimmy Dean" for what it's done for her career and her self-esteem. It was Robert Altman's shortlived Broadway play, from which the movie sprang, she says, "that gave me professional credibility for the first time in my life. For the first time, I didn't feel like an industry joke. You can be stupid about your life and I have been many times but not stupid enough not to know when you're considered nothing but a joke." No one's poking fun at her talents these days, thanks not only to v - . -, . -J : . -.y ; ' , :. "Dean" but to her work in the upcoming big-screen "Silkwood" drama. However, as the 37-year-old entertainer points out, it's taken some 20 years and four comebacks for her to have finally reached that point. Val Kilmer, 23, the current man in Cher's life, is up for a key role in Altman's film version of "Streamers." Shooting of the drama which Altman has been working to bring to screen for some 18 months will be done in Canada, though at this point no start date is set. MIXED MEDIA: Considerable excitement is being generated at Bal-lantine Books not over a new author, but over the rediscovery by Hollywood of the late Cornell Wool-rich, whose works have been out of print for 20 years. Woolrich stories Meryl Streep. above. Is favored to receive the award. became the basis of more films and TV shows than those of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett combined and provided the scenarios for such classic films as Hitchcock's "Rear Window" and Truf-faut's "The Bride Wore Black." And now, suddenly, says Ballantine editor Peter Gethers, there's such soaring show-business interest particularly from cable-TV producers in Woolrich psychological tnrillers that Ballantine is planning to reprint the author's works, seven books at a time. The firm purchased the rights to the Woolrich stories from Chase Manhattan Bank years ago. at a very minimal cost And if even a fraction of the film deals come about, they could generate enough of a rebirth of interest in Woolrich books to make a handsome fortune for the publishing firm. ANOTHER GENERATION HEARD FROM: Tony Perkins' 8-year-old son Osgood makes his acting debut beside his dad in Universale upcoming "Psycho II," playing Tony's Norman Bates character as a boy. . . . The late Peter Finch's son Charles is out to make a name for himself theatrically, but not necessarily in front of the footlights. He is working as associate producer on Broadway's upcoming "Murderer" . . . Romina Power, daughter of late screen idol Tyrone Power, will be working with Edmond Purdom in her "Champagne in Paridiso" film. I'VE GOT NEWS FOR YOU: Film maker Walter Hill has just set his follow-up to Paramount's hit "48 Hrs." He's going to Universal to make "Streets of Fire," a futuristic action film that will roll in April. ABC is so high on the Wolper-Mar-gulies version of "The Thorn Birds" it has decided that its airing in March will be extended from nine hours to 10. "That'll be no problem," says David Wolper. "We've got more than enough footage to oblige happily oblige." THE EIG-SCREEN SCENE: Columbia Pictures intends to rush "Spacehunter Adventures in the Forbidden Zone" into release on June 3 to beat the rush of other three-D pictures that will be flooding the screens this summer. The $11 million "Zone." which doesnt complete production until late this month in Vancouver, is being directed by Lamont Johnson and produced by Don Carmody and Ivan Reitman and has Peter Strauss playing a junkman in space who chases after creatures and monsters and such. But they tell me it's not a comedy, folks, that they plan for it to be accepted as a space-adventure drama.
