Despite a relentless pounding by selling forces, gains exceeded losses by a wide margin at the final bell. Trading in the first hour approached sensational proportions as 880,000 shares changed hands. Turnover for the full day was the largest in more than a year. Leading issues advanced fractions to around a point at the outset, when the peak prices of the day were touched. The price level at one time hit the top level in more than three years. Early buying was a carry-over from the last hour yesterday, when the market surged ahead after delivery of President Truman's annual state-of-the-Union message to the Congress.

Ticker Tape Lags Activity was so intense "that the ticker tape dropped behind its job of recording transactions on the floor of the Exchange. The lag, over in a short time, amounted to as much as three minutes. For the full day, sales amounted to 2,550,000 shares, the largest since November 3, 1948, when turnover ballooned' to 3,230,000 shares. Business yesterday totaled 1,890,000 shares. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks dipped .1 of one point to 72.5, largely because of losses in several railroad issues.

654 Advance, 255 Decline Trading was unusually broad with a total of 1,183 individual issues bought and sold, of which 654 advanced and 255 declined. New highs for 1949-50 were established by 141 issues while none touched their lows. Louisville Gas Electric Company stock closed at 32, its 1949-50 high, unchanged from the previous close. On the Curb Exchange, Ashland Oil Refining Company stock closed at 22, new 1949-50 high, up from the previous close. After early demand was satisfied, the market was under fire most of the day.

At no time, however, did the price structure show pronounced weakness. Trading was particularly heavy in low-priced issues. Of the 15 most active shares, only two were priced above $15 a share: U. S. Steel and Transamerica.

Engineer Tarzian, who was born in Philadelphia, went to Bloomington in 1940 as chief engineer of the Radio Corporation of America's Bloomington factory. After the war, he left R.Ca. and started his own factory in Bloomington, making parts for radia and television sets. He had been with R.C.A. 10 years and had been with Atwater Kent 10 years before that.

Part of his experience was acquired-in Europe and South America. Under the name Sarkes Tarzian, Incorporated, he now has three factories in Bloomington one in' Philadelphia and one in, Hawthorne, N. J. Together they employ more than 1,000 persons. He also has laboratories in Bloomington.

Ashland Oil Plans To Offer Debentures, Preferred Stock Bloomington. Tarzian, who is a manufacturer of parts for television sets, owns another Bloomington radio station (WTTS) and a Bloomington television station (WTTV). He paid $83,750 for the Louisvillians Bloomington equipment, leases and good will. The Louisville men are, partners in the firm of Yeager, Ford Warren, certified public accountants. They started WSUA, a station, October 23, 1946, when there was no other radio station in Bloomington.

There is another radio station there, 2-year-old WTOM, a 250- watt station. WSUA Quit Yesterday WSUA stopped operating at 3 p.m. yesterday. At that time its studios and advertising contracts were taken over by Tarzian's WTTS, a 1-000-watt station which opened March, 1949. Targian's television station opened in November, 1949.

Gains, which outnumbered losses by about two to one, ranged from fractions to a top of five points. It was the heaviest trading day since the virtually uninterrupted rail-bond rally got started around the first of December. Volume reached $6,150,000, compared with $6,060,000 yesterday.

L. N. Bonds Up 314 The Associated Press average of 20 rails hit a new 1949-50 high for the 22d time in the past 28 sessions this time moving up .4 of a point at 95.2. The index had not been this high since it stood at 95.4 March 8, 1947. Foreign dollar bonds also had a field day, moving up a half-point on average to 71.1, a 1949-50 high "mark.

The utility and industrial indices were unchanged from yesterday's levels. Louisville Nashville 3's were at par. Southern Indiana Railway 23.4's were 3 at 80. Southern Indiana Railway, operated for freight service only, runs from Speed five miles to Watson, where it connects with the Baltimore Ohio. Long-term U.

S. Treasury bonds moved steadily to firmly in light over-the-counter trading. A few issues were up 132 of a point and the rest of the list was unchanged. Wheat, Lard Strong; Corn, Oats Irregular Chicago, Jan. 5 (JP) Wheat came up with moderate gains while other grains just dwadled along without getting anywhere on the Board of Trade today.

Lard showed a good deal of strength. A little mill buying developed in wheat, but most of the demand came from professional traders. Commission houses did little. Small receipts of cash grain and additional Government inquiries for flour supported the advance. Wheat closed to 3Ac higher, corn was lower to yc higher, oats were lower to higher, rye was lower to ViC higher, soybeans were lower to 34C higher, and lard was 10c to 20c a hundred pounds higher.

Of the new. proceeds to be received by the company, about $10,800,000 is to" be applied to the retirement of various debts and $1,884,000 to reimbursement of the company treasury for the cost of a recently acquired stock interest in Aetna Oil Company. The b'alance is to be added to working capital. Becker Heads Underwriters Prior to the offering of the securities, it is contemplated that Aetna will be merged into Ashland.

Stockholders' meetings have already been called to that end. The registration statement indicates that A. G. Becker Incorporated, which has managed the company's previous public financing, again will head the underwriting group.
