28 was reported yesterday by Hillenbrand Industries Batesville, Ind. The maker of caskets and hospital equipment had net income of $3,032,000, or 62 cents a share, in its first fiscal quarter, down from $3,162,000, or 64 cents a share in the period a year earlier. Sales increased to $34,389,000 from $30,742,000. The company blamed the lower earnings on severe winter weather that caused a loss of production and increased expenses. Company officials also said they plan to amend the firm's bylaws to reduce the number of directors to 11.
