The Eagles lost to Clemson 19-6 in the 1940 Cotton Bowl, beat Tennessee 19-13 In the 1941 Sugar Bowl and lost to Alabama 37-21 in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, 1943. Coach Jack Bicknell, who led the Eagles to an 8-2-1 record, said he didn't bother to ask other coaches how to prepare for a bowl game.

"We're doing things the way we think is right" he said. "We've taken the approach that the morning Is ours for practice and meetings, and we told the players they should be ready to give us the morning. We told them the afternoon is for fun theirs and ours because I'm going, too." Auburn coach Pat Dye has been to several bowls as a player at Georgia, coach at Alabama and head coach at East Carolina. That was a 1961 benefit called the Mercy Bowl to help families of 16 Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo players killed in a plane crash after a 1960 game at Bowling Green. Fresno State won 364 then and is a 13-point favorite to beat the Falcons again. The Bulldogs are 10-1 and 6-0 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association, while Bowling Green went 7-4, including 7-2 to win the Mid-American Conference. But Bulldogs coach Jim Sweeney recalls how Toledo of the MAC beat favored San Jose State of the PCAA 27-25 with a last-second field goal in the 1981 Cal Bowl.

"Anybody who saw the game last year has to take Bowling Green seriously," Sweeney said. "Bowling Green plays defense with more discipline than anybody we have seen this year. I figure the team that wins will score at least three touchdowns." Associated Press The New York Jets and the Los Angeles Raiders, among the three teams tied for first place in the American Conference, can clinch National Football League playoff berths today. The Jets, winners of five straight games after an opening loss to Miami, visit the Dolphins, 4-2 and losers In two of their last three games. The Raiders (5-1) face the Los Angeles Rams (1-5), who will be making their first appearance in their old home, the Los Angeles Coliseum, since leaving for Anaheim after the 1979 season. The home game will be only the third for the Raiders at the Coliseum, where they moved this year from Oakland, which is located some 400 miles away. "I'm kind of curious as to how the crowd Is going to react," said Raiders coach Tom Flores.

"Unless you're down there in the community, it's hard to get a feel for the crowd. But once the game starts, I'm not going to worry about it "I would Imagine that there will be a lot of people who will be going just because of the nature of the event the Rams coming back to their former home and the Raiders flying in to their new home." Raiders quarterback Jim Plunkett downplayed the rivalry aspect of the game. Yet he also pointed to the significance of the crosstown rivals meeting for the first time since both moved. "The press is probably making it more of a rivalry than it Is," he said. "We're out to get to the playoffs and this is just another team along the way, one that we will have to beat to get there," saitf Plunkett "But I'm sure there will be some excitement and we would like to win the city championship, to put it one way." The Raiders are eight-point favorites.

The Raiders are seeking to remain unbeaten at their new home, where they have won twice. Of the Rams, Flores said, "They certainly have some weapons. (Quarterback) Vince Ferragamo has a strong arm. And they have the ability to strike from anywhere on the field. Their receivers are excellent and (running back) Wendell Tyler has matured." Following last Sunday's 27-24 loss summary At Tokyo P.
