THE COURIER-JOURNAL, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1981 7 lexas beats the fitters, then beats Oklaho: ma 34-14 and faced fourth down at the Texas 27 when Kelly Phelps tried to pass for the first down. Sims sacked him, and the Longhorns drove 69 yards for the go-ahead touchdown, a 36-yard pass from Mclvor to McCloney. McCloney was 15 yards beyond the nearest defender. Texas kept moving in the fourth quarter. Mclvor capped a drive with a four-yard pass to tight end Lawrence Sampleton with 8:14 to go, and Rodney Tate scampered 17 yards for a touchdown with 10 seconds left.

That gave Texas its second-highest point total against Oklahoma since 1941. "We gave them everything they had in the first half and we decided to cut out the charity and go get the victory," Sims said. Mclvor said Texas' offensive line made the victory possible. "Our offensive line was something," he said. But Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer said the same thing about Mclvor.

"Mclvor made the big plays," he said. "We just aren't very Hatchett on a third-down play put the Sooners in position for Wilson's one-yard touchdown run and a 14-3 lead. "Our defense did a great job in 2 the first half just keeping them from getting more points," Texas coach Fred Akers said. "We told the team at halftime to settle down, hold onto the ball and keep going." The Longhorns believed they could do it. "We gave them too much and it was a challenge to our defense, which we accepted," Sims said.

"We beat a good football team and beat them decisively. It shows we are as good as anybody in the country." Oklahoma can't say the same thing, but Switzer noted that "we can still come back and be a good team." Jones led Texas with 134 yards rushing in 36 carries. Wilson led Oklahoma with 85 yards in 23 car- ries. good in the secondary. Texas just played better in the second half than we did.

They earned two touchdowns and we gave them three." That was because of Oklahoma turnovers four fumbles and an interception in the second half. The Sooners, who had lost 10 fumbles in their previous two games, had played an errorless first half. And they took advantage of Texas mistakes. Oklahoma scored for the 171st consecutive game, an NCAA record, after John Walker's fumble on the opening kickoff. John Truitt recovered on the Texas 16, and Chet Winters eventually scored from the one.

After Allegre's second-quarter field goal cut Oklahoma's lead to 7-3, the Sooners had another chance to score after a Texas fumble. A 44-yard field-goal attempt by Michael Keeling fell short, though. But were the third-ranked Long-horns worried? No, said Texas defensive tackle Mark Weber.

"We knew at halftime we would win," he said. "I thought they (the Sooners) were tired. This team just does whatever it takes to win." What it took yesterday was an offense that lost the jitters, not the football, in the second half. It didn't hurt that Texas' defense ranked second in the nation against the rush held Oklahoma to 194 yards on the ground, 164 under its season average. The Sooners didn't complete a pass in eight tries.

Texas had no such problems. Rick Mclvor passed for 127 yards and two second-half touchdowns as the Longhorns defeated Oklahoma for COLLEGE FOOTBALL the third straight year. Texas leads the series 46-27-3. The loss extended Oklahoma's winless string this year to three games its worst streak in 16 years. The Sooners are 1-2-1.

Mclvor helped settle Texas down quickly in the second half. He passed 49 yards to Maurice McCloney to set up a one-yard touchdown run by A. J. "Jam" Jones that cut Oklahoma's lead to 14-10 early in the third period. Texas All-America defensive tackle, Kenneth Sims, then recovered a fumble by Oklahoma's Stanley Wilson, leading to a 22-yard field goal by Raul Allegre.

Then Sims came up with his biggest play. And Memphis, recovering a pair of Louisville fumbles, allowed the Cardinals only 261 yards. "Nothing," said of coach Bob Weber, "comes easy against people like they have here at Memphis." It was a crucial win for the Cardinals, who are 4-2 and talking about a bowl bid. But it was also costly.

Standout linebacker Jay Trautwein broke two bones in his left arm and is lost for the remainder of the season. Louisville got its first big chance midway in the first quarter and took advantage of it. When Memphis State punter Stan Weaver bobbled a snap from center, he was covered by of L's Greg Jones, giving the Cards possession at the Tigers' 11. On third and three from the four, Scott Gannon rolled right, pulled up and hit freshman Keith Humphries in the front corner of the end zone for a touchdown. Tony Blair's kick made it 7-0.

"It was a new route put in especially for this game," Gannon said. "They were in man coverage. Keith went into the end zone with the cor-nerback and looked back, like I was going to throw a little drop pass over his head. Then he was supposed to cut back toward me. I just waited until he got open." For a while, it looked as if seven points were all Louisville would need.

But when Humphries fumbled a punt at his 43, the Cards lost their field position.
