I78 GMC TRUCKS' In need of facelift Ole Miss football ain't what it used to be NEW 1979 Mississippi wound up third in the UPI Tough Transportation and was narrowly edged by Minnesota for first place in the AP. Ole Miss won two more SEC titles in 1962 and 1963 before the quality of its football began to slip somewhat. Even so, Mississippi still was good enough to go to a bowl every year from 1964 through 1971.

Then the program And then in 1959, the year that a University of Mississippi coed named Mary Ann Mobley ruled as Miss America, the Ole Miss football team was something to behold. Ole Miss allowed but 21 points en route to winning nine of 10 regular-season games, the loss coming 7-3 at the hands of the Louisiana State University team led by Billy Cannon. Mississippi avenged that defeat in the Sugar Bowl, beating LSU 21-0. That Ole Miss team, which had two Ail-Americans in guard Marvin Terrell and fullback Charles Flowers, finished second to Syracuse in the AP and UPI polls and was named the SEC Team of the Decade. really went downhill Full line of 6 and lable 1 1 vtrZ-iJ In 1972, Ole Miss finished with a 5-5 record, followed by a 6-5 record the V8 engines avai nign-eneryy lynmun a a hrakn svstpm next season.

Ole Miss then slipped to 3-8 in 1974, the first time since 1949 that this Saturday at Oxford won't be even a shadow of the great Ole Miss teams of the past. Ole Miss, which is struggling with a 2-2 record this season, is in its first year under head coach Steve Sloan, who obviously is going to need time before he can turn the football program around and set it on the successful course that the Rebels once traveled. Sloan entered this season with a 35-21-2 record in five years as a head coach two at Vanderbilt and three at Texas Tech. In his second season at Vandy, his team carved out a 7-3-2 record and tied Texas Tech 6-6 in the Peach Bowl. His 1976 team at Texas Tech won its first share of the Southwest Conference championship.

Sloan might be just the man to return Ole Miss football to its glory years of the past. Remember those years? Ole Miss won the SEC title in 1954 and 1955, climaxing the latter season with a Cotton Bowl victory over Texas Christian. By JIM BOLUS Courier-Journal Times Staff Writer Football at the University of Mississippi was once a thing of beauty. Back in the 1950s and '60s. Ole Miss turned out some powerful football teams, including two (in 1959 and 1960) that came along the same years that the state of Mississippi produced Miss America winners.

But times have changed, and though the girls in Mississippi no doubt are as pretty as they ever were, the Ole Miss football program isn't what it used to be. It needs a facelift. It's true that Ole Miss has managed to pull off several major victories in recent years, topped by a 20-13 triumph over eventual national champion Notre Dame last season at Jackson, and a '21-17 triumph over eventual Southeastern Conference champion Georgia in, 1976 at Oxford, Miss. But, other than a game here or there, Ole Miss football has been nothing special for the last six years. For certain, the Mississippi team that the University of Kentucky will face with windows, extra seats, much much more.

With All-American Jake Gibbs at quarterback, the 1960 Mississippi team finished with a 10-0-1 record, including a 14-6 victory over Rice in the Sugar Bowl. The Football Writers' Association named Mississippi the national champion that season. In the wire-service polls. From 1972 through 1977, Ole Miss won 32 and lost 33 and, of course, didn't go to a bowl. This Ole Miss team, which was outclassed by Georgia 42-3 last Saturday, ranks eighth in the 10-team SEC in rushing offense, fourth in passing offense and eighth in total offense. Ole Miss is ninth in the league defending against the run, eighth against the pass and ninth in overall defense. Kentucky, meanwhile, is last in total offense and eighth in total defense. Mississippi's Jim Miller, a junior who was the national punting champion last season with a 45.9-yard average, currently ranks no better than fifth in the SEC.

The barefoot punter is averaging 39.9 yards this season. Despite Miller's average, Ole Miss associate sports information director Brooks Tinsley said that Sloan hasn't had any complaints about the punting game. Tinsley noted that Miller has punted out of bounds inside the 20 a number of times. Miller's longest punt of the season was a 57-yarder against Georgia. Miller has been variously nicknamed "Thunder Foot," "The Bionic Foot" and "Boom Boom." Miss has been outscored 107-47 by its opponents, including 35-6 in the fourth quarter.

Mississippi has played only one nationally ranked opponent, losing 45-14 to Missouri, currently No. 19 in the country. Mississippi's victories have been over Memphis State (14-7) and Southern Mississippi (16-13). Ole Miss' statistical leaders: Kicker Hoppy Langley four of seven field goals and three of four extra points-. quarterback Bobby Garner 44 pass completions in 65 passes for 423 yards and one touchdown.

He's had two intercepted. Tailback Freddie Williams 297 yards on 52 carries. Linebacker Eddy Householder (who is playing with an injured shoulder) 41 tackles. The Ole Miss injury report: Linebacker Eddie Cole suffered a knee injury against Georgia and will be out for several weeks. Defensive tackle Charlie Cage has a pulled leg muscle, and Sloan lists him as "a tentative starter" for the UK game.

There, they say, you are dealing with teen-agers, in many cases, who would not be mature enough to handle the idea of the opposite sex in the locker room. 1 "I don't have enough experience covering all kinds of sports to comment on that," Andria said. "But it seems to me that the ones who are shy or uncomfortable can easily find some way to cover themselves.

The Yankees, for example, could provide their players with pinstriped bathrobes. Somebody should have a sense of humor about this thing." I agree. In fact, I told Kathy that, when the Series goes back to New York, she ought to walk into the Yankee clubhouse and grab Thurman Munson and say, "Oh, Thurm, we've got to stop meeting like this." She laughed, but didn't think that would go over very well with Mr. Kuhn. Her cause isn't helped by male sports writers who make leering remarks about getting into women's locker rooms.

"Oh, boy," said one, "I can't wait to get in to see Chris Evert." Undoubtedly, there will be some Peeping Grant-lands around, but it seems to me that the athletes themselves pretty much will be able to dictate what they do or don't expose. And, besides, that's not as important as the larger issue, which is the right of a reporter to do his or her job. I believe that every reporter, regardless of sex, ought to have the same access to sources and information. After that, it's a matter of talent and enterprise. I also think that all locker rooms, on all levels, ought to be opened to everyone.

It ought to be up to the managers, coaches, teams and schools involved to work out the best situation to accommodate the needs of the reporters and, at the same time, preserve the rights of the athletes. Any athlete that is shy or self-conscious has all sorts of options at his or her disposal. Believe me, locker rooms and clubhouses after games aren't exactly the most sensual places in the world. Just a lot of tired, sweaty bodies and a lot of talk about the game. And especially at big events such as the World Series, where reporters outnumber players by about 20 to 1, the scene is so chaotic that it's ludicrous to suggest that the presence of women reporters would make it any more disruptive than it already is.

Undoubtedly, the day will come when the presence of women in locker rooms will be so commonplace that nobody will notice. The times, they are a-chang-ing. For Kathy Andria, it can't happen too soon. "It's such a big issue now that I'm a part of the story and I don't want to be," she said. "Whenever I do get into a locker room, people are watching me to see where my eyes are going to go.

to see how I handle myself. I don't like that. I'll be glad when we get through this initial stage so I can just go ahead and do my job." Continued From Page 1 day, Andria sounded more sad and amused than she was angry. "It was a ludicrous scene," she said. "I mean, here were all these men in this incredible room and they had a band playing.

A band! With no women there except me! What did they think these men were going to do. dance with each other? One writer had his daughter there and another had his fiance, but they couldn't bring them." Interestingly, said Andria, most of her male colleagues support her right to do her job, even if it means that their jobs might be made more difficult. For example, the only fair alternative to opening the locker rooms to everyone is keeping everyone out. Then it would be up to management to bring out certain players so all reporters would have an equal opportunity to Interview them. To many male reporters, this isn't nearly as satisfactory as having access to the locker room, mainly because it cuts down on the opportunity for enterprise.

Sometimes a reporter will want to talk privately to a specific player instead of doing it In an open forum where his rivals then will get the same quotes and information. Or what if the player isn't one of those selected to be brought out for questioning? The Yankees came up with what came to be known as the "15-30" policy. That is, the locker room would be open to everyone for only 15 minutes after a game. Then it would be closed for 30 minutes to give the players a chance to shower and dress. As every reporter knows, 15 minutes often isn't enough to do a proper job.

Andria sees in such plans a devious plot to turn male and female reporters against each other. "A lot of veteran baseball writers in New York resent the 15-30 thing," she said. "After it was announced, I overheard one of them say, 'All for one dumb But most of them have been sympathetic. In fact, I've been surprised that so many are sympathetic."
