- s THE COURIER-JOURNAL. WEDNESDAY. APRIL 7. 1993 E5 Continued from Page E 1 there on, it was pretty easy." "I thought at one point I was going to catch Pat, but he had so much horse left," said Tony D'Amico, rider of Poverty Slew, who was seventh in Turfway Park's Florence Stakes in his last start Jan. 23. "But (Poverty Slew) blew by the other ones like they were tied to a post. We have high hopes for him." Poverty Slew finished three lengths ahead of third-place Wil-liamstown, who had mindboggling works at Oaklawn Park but spent much of yesterday's race in tight quarters. Once he got clear, Wil-liamstown, making his 3-year-old debut after an operation to correct a breathing obstruction, didn't quit as he had in some races last year. Premier Explosion, who upset Cherokee Run in Gulfstream Park's Swale Stakes, was only a half-length behind before fading in the final furlong. Cherokee Run, 7-1-1 in 10 starts, paid $5 to win as the 3-2 favorite in the field of eight 3-year-olds (England Expects and Ground Force were scratched). Said Alexander: "He hit another gear when he turned for home." The Florida-bred son of Runaway Groom won $52,328 to lift his earnings to $156,080 for owner Jill Robinson. He may run in the April 24 Derby Trial at Churchill Downs. Alexander will have Dogwood Stable's Wallenda running in Saturday's Blue Grass Stakes at Keene-land. Wallenda has been Alexander's charge all along. "I believe everything happens in threes," he said. "If Wallenda wins the Blue Grass, I might retire. Especially if I hit the Lotto the same day." Blue Grass notes: Silver of Silver dropped out of Saturday's stakes because of a throat infection. The Derby still is possible, trainer Skippy Shapoff said Jim Beam winner Prairie Bayou worked a half-mile yesterday at Churchill in 51 seconds. "That was a little slower than Tom wanted," said John Bohannan, brother of trainer Tom Bohannan. "But the track was a little cuppy, and the ground was breaking away underneath him some." . . . Living Vicariously worked five furlongs at Keeneland in 59, best time of the morning at the distance. . . . Halostrada went five-eighths in 1:00 the last eighth in 11 Halos- trada's half-brother, Conte Di Sa-voya, was second in last year's Blue Grass, then fourth in the Derby. Sports Spectrum: More than $27.5 million was bet on Turfway Park races during the 63 days of in-tertrack wagering at the Sports Spectrum, the Churchill-owned ITW parlor that opened Nov. 29 on the old Louisville Downs site. Turfway's Hpliday Meet ended Thursday. The total represents a 23.35 percent increase over the corresponding meet a year ago, when ITW was held at Churchill. The average daily attendance at the Sports Spectrum was 2,486 and the average handle $437,010. The. total attendance of 156,596 was a 14 percent increase. Irish Derby can expect first US. entry in history DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) - The Irish Derby could have its first American-trained entry in the 128-year history of the race. New York-based trainer Leo O'Brien said yesterday he plans to enter his 3-year-old colt Irish Harbour in this year's Irish Derby at the Curragh on June 27. He also plans to enter the horse in the Italian Derby on May 30. KEENELAND RESULTS Weather cloudy FIRST - $5,000, elm ($5,000), 4YO up, 7 I. Track fast Horse, Jockey pp ST V.
