I personally enjoy writing it, but if a lot of your audience is saying, 'Gee, this disturbs then we may decide to let it go." (Some episodes have already been broadcast without it.) The cast and crew of "Love War" also has had to deal with the death of cast member John Hancock, who played bartender Ike Johnson.

Hancock died last October, not long after the show made its debut, and has been replaced by actor Charlie Robinson of "Night Court" fame. English says Hancock's death was "a terrible emotional jolt to all of us. I can't overestimate what that did to all of us just as a group of human beings." It also had a significant impact on viewers, many of whom turned away from episodes featuring Hancock that appeared after his death. But English says that she thinks things are back on track now and that the show is moving in a better direction. Though "Love War" seemed at first to be a show very much about sex in large part thanks to a standout discussion in the pilot about condoms English wants 4:30 House on Haunted Hill (MAX) 4:30 Nate and Hayes (HBO) 4:30 Rascals and Robbers: The Secret Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn (SH) 4:30 Hangfire (MC) 5:30 Ministry of Fear (AMC) Vi NIGHT 6:00 Ishtar (MAX) (SH) 6:00 Qulgley Down Under (MC) '2 6:15 High Ice (HBO) 6:30 The Hustler (ENC) Vi 6:30 Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken (DISN) 7:00 If I Were King (AMC) 8:00 The Big Chill (WGN) 8:00 Near Mrs.

Supporting cast members and barflies at the Blue Shamrock grill (actors Joel Murray, Suzie Piakson and Michael Nouri, who plays Wal-ly's ex-husband), will get more time in the spotlight, according to English, who says "Love War" is a lock (though not formalized yet) for next season. Of course, even with her intense focus on "Love War," English keeps careful track of life in the "FYI" newsroom. She says she's "enormously proud" of the job producers Gary Dontzig and Steven Peterman have done, though she admits there are "things I would have done differently" But English is willing to take responsibility, to take it on the chin, even though she no longer has any formal ties to the show. "To leave them with that baby," she says with a laugh, "was really kind of a nasty thing to do." Real-life sex styles in modern America. "As we enter this decade, we're all very confused about what the correct behavior is, and that's what I wanted Jack and Wally to go through," she says. "So every week we pick a topic that we feel is very universal to couples. It could be as simple as cleaning out a closet or something a little more complicated: 'When do you tell the truth to somebody, and when do you What English did not want to do, however, was make a show with the kind of Sam-and-Diane, David-and-Maddie, on-again-off-again sexual tension still seen in such programs as Linda Bloodworth-Thomason's "Hearts Afire." "It's been done," says English.

"It's been done very well by other people." So she got the sex out of the way in Episode 2, "and that was the end of it." Now she's planning the future for Jack a guy who hasn't won any medals from the women's movement and Wally, who's still feeling the sting of her divorce and continues to resist Jack's entreaties for a deeper commitment. "There was an awful lot of hype on this show," says English, who points out that when she and co-executive producer-husband Joel Shu-kovsky first introduced the Candice Bergen-led comedy "Murphy Brown" in 1988, "there were absolutely no expectations because no one really knew me, and I had nothing like it on my resume." The going was rough for "Murphy Brown" during its first season, too, says English. "My shows are slow-growth shows.

They always have been." Besides, English didn't want "Love War" to be another "Murphy Brown." "I wanted very much to make this show look different, so I structured it like a play," she says. Unfortunately, the most theatrical device in the show known as breaking the fourth wall (having characters occassionally address the audience) has also become the most controversial. "Some people love it. Some people hate it," she says. "There's nobody in between.

And so it has been Producer realizes 'Love hasn't set world on fire By JAMES ENDRST The Hartford Courant The interview is over, and now Diane English is asking the questions. She would like to hear a TV critic's opinion of her CBS sitcom "Love War." "And, please," she says over the phone from Los Angeles, "be totally frank." The Emmy-winning writer-producer knows she's sticking her chin out on this one. Because even though "Love War" has been a consistent Top 15 performer in its Monday night time slot, English knows the show has its problems. She knows "Love War" has its hit lead-in "Murphy Brown" a show English created but no longer produces to thank for high ratings. She knows that "Love War" her romantic comedy set in a New York bar and grill and starring Susan Dey as Wally Porter, a divorced, uptown restaurant owner, and Jay Thomas as her opinionated, blue-collar newspaper-columnist boyfriend Jack Stein hasn't captured America's heart.

That's why English is on the Sunday, March 7, 1993 TV WEEK Page 7 A.
