Bookman scheduled to arrive in the first half of this year comes with one reference work built in and a cartridge slot that lets you add a second book. Say you buy the pocket version with the Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus. You can get a snap-in cartridge that contains the Concise Columbia Encyclopedia.

Or you might get Desktop Bookman with "Betty Crocker Cookbook" inside and "Parker's Wine Guide" on a cartridge. Both books the built-in title and the one on the cartridge can be searched with software built into the device. A button on the Bookman keyboard lets you switch between the two. Bookman comes in three versions: pocket-size, desktop and a talking desktop version that will pronounce words. Prices range from $60 to about $150.

Each has a three-line LCD display capable of showing about a dozen words and a conventional QWERTY keyboard. About 18 Franklin cartridges are available, with prices from $10 to about $90. The company says it will have 100 titles on cartridges by the middle of next year. sive adjective or definition. But maybe I don't know the right people.

The companies that make handheld electronic reference books have sold a boatload of the little devices since they first hit the market in the late 1980s. Franklin Electronic Publishers says it sold more than half a million electronic books last year. I understand the appeal of portable reference books. They're easy to use and relatively inexpensive. But I always thought their usefulness was too limited.

You had to buy one book for Spanish translations, another for French, another if you want an encyclopedia and so on. It doesn't take long to run out of pockets. Now Franklin has a new product, Bookman, which makes the pocket-ref Cartridge subjects include general reference works. The Merriam-Webster dictionaries have about 400,000 definitions, and the Concise Columbia Encyclopedia has more than 12,700 articles. The Betty Crocker's Cookbook cartridge contains about 1,000 recipes, the Bartender's Guide has more than 2,200 drinks and the Diet and Nutrition Guide tells about more than 5,000 foods.

Other titles on cartridge include Parents' Emergency Medical Guide, Speaking Spanish Master and the Total Baseball Encyclopedia. Other cartridges offer a King James version of the Bible and movie reviews. Franklin also has a deal with Intuit to produce a pocket version of Quicken, the popular personal finance software. Portable Quicken will include a serial port so it can exchange data with a personal computer. The product is slated to be available by the end of 1995 with a list price of about $130.
