THE COURIER-JOURNAL, MOI WHEN YOU THJNK OF UCLA's win marred by loss of quarterback COLLEGE FOOTBALL I THINK OF, WORLD'S LARGEST DISCOUNT JM110 noun fflBBMHlflitt D5 eight-game winning streak snapped. The Aggies avenged a 35-34 loss at Tulsa last year, their lone regular- season defeat. Hill, who ran for 125 yards on 26 carries, gave credit to the defense for holding Tulsa to three field goals after the turnovers. Tulsa's Eric Lange extended his string of consecutive field goals to 19 with kicks of 22, 40 and 42 yards. Virginia 53, Navy Os Bobby Goodman threw a school-record five TD passes as No.

23 Virginia (2-0) handed host Navy its most lop sided season-opening loss ever. Goodman, who left after the third period, was 14 of 22 for 306 yards. His TD passes covered 49, 14, 20, 53 and 16 yards. Kentucky State 35, Wing ate 33: Kentucky State (1-1) led 28-7 in the first half, then survived a fourth- quarter, 23-7 onslaught by host Wingate, N.C. Thorobreds quarterback Donnie Catlett threw four touchdown passes and ran for another.

He threw two scoring passes to Juan Taylor and two to Eric Alford. Cat- lett's 1-yard touchdown run at 4:57 in the fourth quarter gave Kentucky State a 65-15 lead. Tennessee Wesleyan 35, Kentucky Wesleyan 10: A school-record field goal by Robby Robertson was Kentucky Wes-leyan's only bright spot in the sec ond half as Tennessee Wesleyan outscored the host Panthers 28-3 after the intermission. Robertson's 49-yard field goal came with 1:10 left in the third quar ter, trimming the margin to 21-10. place-kicker for now "Brandon has been working as the No.

2 kicker all fall, and he's gotten better and better," Morrow said. "He gets the ball up real quick, and that a high priority for us. Right now he's kicking so consis tent, and you've got to go with the consistent guy. Both Brookfield and Morrow said that Harnden, who also didn't learn of the switch until shortly before kickoff, handled the news as well as could be expected. "It would be tough on anybody," Brookfield said.

"If he had known on Monday or Tuesday, he would have had a week to settle down. He was real disappointed before the game, but I told him to hang in there and he seemed fine after the game. He was happy we won." Brookfield's first college field-goal try came with 59 seconds left in the half, when he nailed a 25- yarder to cut Memphis State's lead to 9-3. Brookfield, who made a 61-yarder in high school, said he wasn particularly jittery. "I'd been in anxiety situations be fore in high school, so I wasn't real ly nervous, he said.

Brookfield hit his only conversion attempt of the day, but his punting didn't go as smoothly. He had one punt blocked, and his final totals were 10 punts for a 36.9 average, with a long of 48 yards. He punted five times at Ohio State for a 44.4 average. Iff UPDATED EVERY 10 MINUTEST 1991 MERCURY CAPRIS SEVERAL IN STOCK $11,985 199211NC0LN CONTINENTAL 6000 MILE- PROGRAM CAR 1989 FORD TEMPO WHITE. The Southeastern Conference opener left each team at 1-1 overall. Daigle broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth quarter, hitting Wesley Jacobs for a 66-yard touchdown pass. The score came two plays after Nate Miller deflected quarterback Sleepy Robinson's pitch and Anthony Williams recovered on the LSU 33. Minutes later, Carlton Buckets intercepted a Robinson pass on the LSU 40 and returned it to the Mississippi State 32. Four plays later, freshman running back Robert Davis ran 17 yards for a touchdown.

Mississippi State next fumbled on the LSU 45, then jumped offside on fourth-and-one to keep LSU's drive alive. LSU faked a field-goal attempt to pick up another first down. Germaine Williams then went 7 yards for a score. Daigle, who replaced starter Chad Loup in the third quarter, was 4 of 7 for 89 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Loup was 5 of 8 for 44 yards in the first half.

Vanderbllt 42, Duke 37: Eric Lewis' 6-yard scoring run with 3:51 remaining capped an 80-yard drive and lifted the host Commodores (1-1) past the Blue Devils (1-1). Brookfield kicked a 23-yard field goal in Saturday's 16-15 victory over Memphis State in Cardinal Stadium, and he will continue to do double duty as of L's place-kickerpunter Saturday night at Arizona State. of coach Howard Schnellen-berger said the dual kicking job is Brookfield's permanently, or at least as permanently as it gets in college football. "It's kind of like the quarterback situation," Schnellenberger said. "Once you've proven in a game that you can do it, you have to kind of lose the job." Brookfield was already the regular punter and was handling kick-offs. His elevation to the No.

1 spot for field goals came in the wake of a couple of costly misses by Harnden in an opening 20-19 loss to Ohio State on Sept. 5. Harnden, a red-shirt freshman, missed a 25-yard field goal wide right and had an extra-point try blocked because he didn't kick the ball high enough. So the coaches watched both kickers closely in practice last week, then decided at the last minute to go with Brookfield, a sophomore, against Memphis State. Brookfield, from the Denver suburb of Littleton, said he wasn't told about the switch until after pre-game warmups, when he was informed of the decision by assistant coach Jeff Morrow.

"I was surprised," Brookfield said. "I figured they'd come back with Kenny to try to build his confidence. But I guess they felt I could get the job done." Morrow said Brookfield got the nod because of his consistency in practice and his ability to get his field-goal attempts off quicker. 1989 LINCOLN TOWN CARS ALL LEATHER, LOW MILES $11,550 1992 LINCOLN mm CARS LOADED PROGRAM CARS 10 IN STOCK 1992 CHEVROLET CAMARO RS BLACK BEAUTY $1 1 ,995 Associated Press Wayne Cook accomplished all that could have been expected and more in his first start at quarterback for UCLA. Unfortunately, he won't be playing again this season.

Cook suffered two torn ligaments in his right knee late in the second quarter of UCLA's 37-14 season-opening victory over Cal State-Ful-lerton (1-1) Saturday night. "Wayne will undergo surgery Monday at the UCLA Medical Center," UCLA sports information director Marc Dellins said. "An examination revealed he tore the medial collateral and interior cruciate ligaments in his knee." Before being injured, Cook completed 8 of 13 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown without being intercepted. "We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Wayne," UCLA coach Terry Donahue said. "I've never had an athlete work as hard to prepare himself for a successful season as Wayne did.

It's a tragedy to see an injury like this end his season." Cook, a sophomore, had taken over at quarterback for UCLA from Tommy Maddox, who passed up his final two years of eligibility to turn pro. Rob Walker, a redshirt freshman, came in and completed 5 of 12 passes for 58 yards without being intercepted. Donahue said Walker will start at quarterback Saturday when the 15th-ranked Bruins play at Brigham Young. Cook was injured when sacked by Fullerton's Randy Strickland. After amassing only 263 yards 50 less than last season's average, which was the worst in the Southeastern Conference the Cats' Stack-I option and conservative play-calling was uniformly panned by the Florida press. McEwen belittled the Cats' new scheme as an "I-Bone, T-Bone, Z-Bone, Funny-Bone offense," a gentle dig by comparison. From The Florida Times-Union: "Whatever it is, the Wildcats ought to take it back for a refund. Or find a head coach who can call plays as well as he gives motivational talks. "Somebody should inform Bill Curry that a certain amount of boldness is required to succeed in this high-tech era of college football.

Only the lion in "The Wizard of Oz' would have run the ball on third-and-long from the (Florida) 10 (trailing 14-7) and on third-and-16 from midfield (trailing 21-10)." The Gainesville Sun: "Watching (Steve) Spurrier's offense matched up against Kentucky's new Stack-I attack was like reading an excerpt from Plato's Republic and then delving into the latest escapades of Snuffy Smith. We're talking serious stuff versus the funny papers." The Orlando Sentinel: "Florida's defense was not tested. Curry's idea of an exciting offense is a fullback dive on third down and leaving his best passer on the bench. Louis Perez kicked field goals of 43 and 37 yards in the first quarter, and UCLA scored a pair of touchdowns in the second period on a 3-yard run by Kevin Williams and a 10-yard pass from Cook to J.J.

Stokes. Williams, the Pacific-10 Conference's leading rusher last season, gained 124 yards on 23 carries despite sitting out the final period. In other games Saturday night Florida State 24, Clemson 20: Charlie Ward hit Kevin Knox with a 9-yard touchdown pass with 2:08 left to lift No. 5 Florida State past 15th-ranked Clemson. The win left the visiting Semi-noles as the clear favorite to win the Atlantic Coast Conference title in their first season in the league.

The Seminoles are 2-0 overall and in the league. Defending ACC champion Clemson fell to 1-1 and 0-1. Ward, who threw four interceptions for the second straight game, completed all five of his passes for 64 yards in leading the Seminoles to the game-winning touchdown. Ward, also a guard on the basketball team, led the Seminoles with 311 yards total offense, hitting hit 20 of 39 passes for 258 yards and two TDs while rushing for 53 yards on 11 carries. Louisiana State 24, Mississippi State 3: LSU held off No.

18 Mississippi State long enough for Curry, who rarely acknowledges media chatter, took the insults in stride. "People are going to be critical," he said. "When you don't play well, you deserve to be criticized." Curry, however, did rush to the defense of his offense, which he said was undone by poor execution, not poor planning. "It's not 'close to the and it's not 'nothing he said. "People who don't understand football very well might say that.

We feel like if we execute our offense properly, nobody can shut us down. We just didn't execute it very well." Curry said he saw precious few bright spots in Saturday's loss, except for the punting of Jason Todd, who booted boomers of 53, 47 and 43 yards, and the play of free safety Willie Cannon (15 tackles and one interception), who filled in for injured starter Brad Armstead. "It was a heroic effort on his part," Curry said. "He had to come out of the game in the first half with cramps, he was so hyper. There was so much pressure on Willie, and he put so much on himself." Cannon's teammates are feeling the heat, too, as they get ready to play host to Indiana (1-0) on Saturday.

Curry plans no changes in the Cats' attack, but he will demand improved tackling on defense and sharper execution on offense. "We have to prepare and get much better by Saturday," Curry said. "We just have to do what we do better." NOTES Three Wildcats suffered minor injuries against Florida: cornerback Don Robinson (dislocated shoulder), flanker Troy Hobbs (sprained ankle) and offensive tackle Mark Askin (sprained knee). All are listed as day-to-day and are expected to play against IU. Armstead and his backup, Melvin Johnson, both missed the Florida game with injuries but have recov ered enough to return to full-contact practice tomorrow.
