I'f WW 2 THE COURIER-JOURNAL, TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 1982 Bourbons pour it on Schlitz 9-3 SCORECARD SOFTBALL By RICK HAAS Courier-Journal Correspondent What a difference a day makes. At least In the minds of Kentucky player-manager Cobbie Harrison and catcher Bill Gatti after his Bourbons defeated the Milwaukee Schlitz 9-3 at Bishop David Field last night to halt a three-game losing streak. The second game of the scheduled double-header was stopped in the top of the fifth inning when a thunderstorm began. It was just two nights ago, in between two losses to the Schlitz, that Harrison remarked, "We stink." But after the Bourbons put Milwaukee away with a four-run third inning, bringing their record to 5-12, Harrison was in a much happier frame of mind. "I'm sure we'll get it together," said Harrison, who chose not to put himself in the lineup last night.

We came on last year after a worse start than this, so I'm confident" The Bourbons fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first when Phil Higgins' sacrifice fly scored Dick Laba. But the Bourbons scored three in the bottom of the inning on left fielder Pat Paulson's bases-loaded single combined with a Schlitz fielding error on the play. Denver ruins Rincon's debut Doyte DeSa rf pnnaoeipnia Weiterman was able to score from first base because Paulson committed an error of his own on Kevin Delimat's line drive. Then, in the Bourbons' third, Gatti hit a two-run homer his 12th of the year with Greg Whitlock aboard. Kenny Parker followed with a single, moved to third on David Whitlock's single and scored when John McGrath hit into a fielder's choice.

Greg Kemp followed with a single to score McGrath. There was a play at the plate on McGrath's run and Milwaukee pitcher Weiterman argued the call strenuously enough to get himself ejected from the game. David Whitlock drove in Nick Ni-kitas for another run in the fourth and brother Greg Whitlock drove in Jimmy Hammond in the sixth for the final Kentucky run. Higgins hit a solo home run, his ninth, in the seventh inning for the Schlitz to account for the final score. Gatti agreed with his manager that the defending United Professional Softball League champions are now ready to get back to last year's form.

"We've done everything we can possibly do," Gatti said. "We've thrown chairs, banged on lockers, yelled and screamed. Now it's the calm after the storm. It's time for some soul-searching. Everybody has to do what he's supposed to do on the ball field.

I think everybody realizes that and now we've got a good shot to turn things around. We'll be at home for three weeks and that will help a lot." Milwaukee was leading 3-2 in the second game when it was called. A UPSL game has to go five innings before it's official, so the game will have to be replayed in its entirety, probably the weekend of July 17-18 when the Schlitz comes back to town. It's a lucky thing for the Bourbons that the game will be replayed because both Parker and Harrison were thrown out of the game for arguing calls by the umpires. Santana then scored on Mills' single. However, Rincon, who had retired eight straight, gave up a double to O'Brien and a subsequent triple by Johnson. When right fielder Dan Gonzales poked a grounder up the first-base line, Johnson scored to tie the game at 3-3. The Redbirds (24-22) had an opportunity to score in the seventh, when Mills doubled and hot-hitting Gene Roof, who entered the game batting .327, was intentionally walked with one out. But former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Will McEnaney came on to relieve starter Mike Smithson and got the next two batters out.

Boitano, who pitched for Tidewater in the New York Mets' organization last season, started the eighth and did not allow a hit. He also struck out three in his two innings' work. Smithson, who is 6-feet-8, struck out five straight batters after giving up a leadoff double to Roof. But he had his problems with the bottom three batters in Louisville's lineup. Of his seven hits allowed, six came from Bjorkman, Mills and Santana.

Denver's win evened the four-game series at 1-1. Left-hander Al Olmsted (3-5) will pitch for Louisville tonight, with right-hander Jim Fair (4-2) scheduled to start for the Bears. Continued from Page One place. He never gave us anything we could hit." Of Rincon's four walks, three came in the first inning. Denver (20-18) scored in that inning on a single by designated hitter Pat Putnam.

The Redbirds tied the game in the second inning on Bjorkman's fifth home run of the season. In the fourth, the Redbirds rallied with two outs to give Rincon some cushion. Back-to-back doubles by Evansville's Bailey hurls three-hitter to beat 89ers Associated Press Howard Bailey pitched his first complete game of the year and held Oklahoma City to three hits to lead the visiting Evansville Triplets to a 5-1 win over the 89ers in American Association baseball action last night. Evansville (20-23) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Jeff Ken-aga tripled, then scored on a double by Eddie Gates. The eventual winning run came in the third when Jeff Cox scored on a sacrifice fly by Howard Johnson.

Iowa's Mel Hall and Pat Tabler each drove in two runs as the Cubs clubbed Wichita 6-1 at Des Moines. The win raised Iowa's record to 19-21; Wichita is 28-14. (3), smalley (5). 51 Powell, oamoie.
