Sit! Labossiere Makes Home InNewWHA By United Prats International After 10 years of trying to make it in the National Hockey League Gordon Labossiere has finally found a home in the World Hockey Association Labossiere who has spent most of his professional hockey career in the minor leagues never really made it in the NHL though he he'' trials with the New York Rangers Los Angels Kings -and Minnesota North Stars His best season was 1967-6 when he played 68 games with Los Angeles and scored 1 goals BUT IN his first year with the Houston Aeros of the newly-formed WHA the 32-year-old Labossiere has reached stardom Last night he scored three goals to lead the Aeros to a 7-5 victory over the New England Whalers and the tallies brought his season goal mark to 21 Labossiere scored once in the first period but it was his two third period goals that proved to be the difference In other games Ottawa beat Quebec 7-5 and Los Angeles edged Minnesota 4-3 in ove time as they called him in Baltimore is getting on his bike and coming out here where he has suddenly become the No 1 man in the running to succeed pottering Tommy Prothro as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams Should McCafferty do so and that possibility grows stronger all the time his appointment will make for an ironic link in the careers of the two present Super Bowl coaches Don Shula and George Allen The facts in the case are these: THE RAMS turned in a disappointing 6-7-1 record in the West Division this year where they wound up forlorn also-rans Instead of the contenders most people figured they would be For the Rams it was their first losing season in seven years Worse yet for Carroll Rosenblum their new owner who felt he was inheriitng a winner when he the Baltimore Colts for the Rams last Augkus its was his first losing season 16 years Now Rosenblum honestly believes a change at the top is dictated and agonizing over this one HE HAS FIRED only one coach in all the years he has been in football and that was 11 years ago in Baltimore when he let go Weeb Ewbnak and named Shula the new head coach of the Colts Shu-la did very well although he never won a world title with Baltimore and when he left for the Miami Dolphins Rosenblum went out and personally hand-picked a new coach himself His choice was McCafferty who promptly guided the Colts to a Super Bowl championship with a 16-13 win over Dallas two years ago Staubach hinted that is a lot of scuttlebutt going about possible palyer changes in Dallas but he consistently said he hoped to be playing for the Cowboys again next year GOING to strive to do everything I possibly can to play for the Dallas he said think right now I have earned the right to be the No 1 quarterback "After the Super Bowl last year I thought I deserved the right to start But right now I anticipate competing for the job and going to give it everything got I was told today that I would not have a chance to win the No 1 quarterback spot then I would ask to be THERE WAS no reason to believe coach Tom Landry would not put Staubach and Morton on equal footing at the opening of training camp later this year At about this time last year with Staubach in command Morton said he wanted to stay with Dallas because it would take two experienced quarterbacks to take a team to the championship level Staubach said i he had been in place he might rot have taken the same attitude have a lot of respect for Staubach said "He had a tremendous year Personally off the field we have not socialized a great deal but I have a lot of respect for LANDRY CHOSE Staubach over Morton to start in 26-3 loss to the Redskins "That was my biggest disappointment as an said Staubach who had suffered a preseason shoulder injury which required surgery "I had a chance to make up for a disappointing saeson and I By PETE CICCARELLI University of Texas at El Paso President Dr Arleigh Templeton considers athletics a portion of the entire university and deems the oft-maligned athletic department on an along with the entire UTEP program my office as president" Templeton told The Herald-' Post function like a business manager I feel I could come into El Paso and manage a car dealership a clothing factory or any business I am trying to run things in the most productive of ways a sense you can compare the situation to that of the Dallas Templeton I think the entire attitude here has become somewhat complacent We can no longer have that The time has ended when we can spend $15 million per year and at the end of the term have nothing to show for TEMPLETON went on to discuss his feelings towards the athletic department at UTEP and outlined his intended policies have had (athletic director) George McCarty in my office and have discussed the new policies with him I informed him that I will carefully audit the athletic department's budget monthly and will know where every quarter is spent 1 am not going to just give the department $700000 and let them take it over to the gym and divide it up I want to be surprised by any occurrences in the department and I want to find out at the end of the year we were $700000 in the Templeton added that he considered McCarty an extension of the president's office and he expected to be consulted on all decisions is also my Templeton stated have athletes that won't embarass you in the classroom There will be none of this all-conference football player ending up with a total of 33 credits after four years An education is the primary purpose an athlete comes to a university Athletics is merely a secondary endeavor spoke with basketball coach Don Haskins and I can't tell you how impressed I was He didn't come in here and try to tell me the things I wanted to hear He explained to me the hard facts It is going to be a pleasure working with such a fine person HAVE SPOKEN with various persons in all Templeton continued I will continue to do so I want to get impressions am not going to come in here and start replacing people right and left" Templeton replied when questioned about athletic department officials want to get things turned around here at the university and to do so I will have to evaluate things for Templeton had one philosophy on recruiting prospective student-athletes have to start going into New Mexico Wyoming and Nevada and try to recruit from those points Texas has sensational football talent but this school is not going to out-recruit Darrell Royal or the University of Concerning the present financial status of the university Templeton commented: have been here only a short time but it appears to me that the university at the insistence of the community has bought off more than it can pay for we need a new Templeton continued I don't want something that is going to be used just 16 times a year build something that everyone can make use of for convocations concerts and recreation GOT a lot of work ahead of the new president surmised what I came down here to And at that he excused himself and returned to his desk After all the president of a university does have work to do the and summer he left McCafferty behind in Baltimore reluctantly WITH THE Rams he inherited Prothro coaching in the pro ranks in only his second season following a long and uccessful tenure at UCLA Prothro reallly He was signed by the late Dan Reeves who lured him away from UCLA after Southern John McKay had turned down the Rams job Prothro succeeded George Allen who Reeves fired THOSE ARE the facts which now tie McCafferty Shula and Allen together Here are some additional facts: Rosenblum has not actually made up his mind to fire Prothro yet leaning in that direction but he like firing anybody He feels a strong attachment for anyone In his employ The way out for him may be the fact he hire Prothro in the first place That could be all the justification Rosenblum needs to make the switch The Rams owner and Prothro met privately to discuss the situation McCAFFERTY is now meaning he have a job He has been quietly invited here for the Super Bowl game by Rosenblum Also invited have been all the members of staff when he was with Baltimore Alex Sun dusky who acted as the interim coach when McCafferty was fired in Qctober: Dick Bieiski Bob (Red) Miller: John Idzik Bobby Boyd and Henry Bul-lough There is a tremendous loyalty between McCafferty and his staff A similar loyalty exists between Rosenblum and McCafferty Two years ago Rosenblum signed McCafferty to a five-year contract but new owner fired "Easy Rider" Plus FET 175 Each 24-MONTH GUARANTEE in tne NFC title loss to Washington says he will be pulling for the Miami Dolphins in the Super Bowl because of some post game remarks made by the Redskins Staubach also said he did not consider himself as the No 1 quarterback at present but said if he thought he would not be given a chance to compete for the job next fall he would ask to be traded His remarks came during an interview on Public Broadcast Service television station ALTHOUGH Staubach never mentioned him by name he was obviously displeased with quotes attributed to Washington tackle Diron Talbert The remarks concerned the fact that some Redskins were happy that Staubach started against them in the championship game instead' of Craig Morton because they felt Dallas would be easier to defeat with Staubach charge "One of them (who made the comments after the game) has a brother on our said Staubach brother Don is a member of the squad guess there is some bitterness I guess not crazy about me and I'm not crazy about him But that is just bush-league talk He should have come out and said that before the game GOING to be a big Dolphin fan Sunday I think that when you win a football you savor it and you game you savor it and you don't talk a lot about it mad eby the Redskins I was bugged a little some by the things they said There were the two-percenters who Dempsey Named New Mentor YOUNGSTOWN Ohio (UPI) Rey
