G. Almirante, Italian leader of neo-fascists, dies at age 73 Associated Press ROME Giorgio Almirante, who played a minor role in Benito Mussolini's last government and was a founder and longtime leader of Italy's neo-fascist party, died yesterday. He was 73. Almirante died of heart disease, according to the Italian news agency ANSA. Almirante, who was elected to the Chamber of Deputies 11 times between 1948 and 1987, was charged with helping a right-wing terrorist in a 1972 bombing, but the charges were dropped under a 1987 amnesty.

His Italian Social Movement was the political heir of Mussolini's fascist regime. By 1987 it had become Italy's fourth-largest party in Parliament, with about 6 percent of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies. Almirante stepped down in December as national secretary of the neo-fascist party, which supports a halt in immigration into Italy, a stronger presidency and tougher measures against organized crime. Another former party leader and founder, Pino Romualdi, died of cancer last Friday. Romualdi, 77, the editor of the party newspaper, was elected to the Chamber of Deputies seven times between 1953 and 1979 and was a senator from 1983 to 1987.

The party announced a joint funeral tomorrow at St. Agnes Roman Catholic church in Rome. Almirante joined Mussolini's last government in 1943 as chief of staff of the Ministry of Popular Culture and served until Mussolini was overthrown. The dictator was shot and hanged in a public square in Milan in April 1945. In February 1979, the Chamber of Deputies waived Almirante's parliamentary immunity so that he could be tried for reviving the political equivalent of the outlawed Fascist Party.

But he was re-elected to Parliament, and the immunity-lifting process had to begin again. He never went to trial.
