Paul Curtis, former president of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and an assistant at Purdue since 1982, is scheduled for a March 31 bearing in Elkhart on a charge of shoplifting. Purdue relieved Curtis of his coaching duties Tuesday, a day after be was charged with the attempted theft of clothes from Meis Department Store on March 4, school officials said. "I have no comment at this time. There will be a time when I will," said Curtis, who coached high school basketball in Indiana for 26 years, including a 12-year stint at Crawfordsville.

Curtis is charged with trying to take a jacket and two other items with a total value of $250 from the store, Elkhart County Prosecutor Michael Cosentino said. Police said Curtis was in Elkhart on a recruiting trip. Jud Heathcote of Michigan State was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in a vote by Midwest media. Auociattd Prtst Mississippi State University promoted assistant basketball coach Richard Williams to head coach yesterday, making him the 17th coach in the school's history. Jhi selection was announced at a press conference in Starkville, Miss.

'it Appreciate the confidence that athletic director Charlie Carr and MSJJipresident Dr. Donald Zachari-as arid the screening committee had in me in allowing me to become hed coach," Williams said. "Most of you know that my background is all Mississippi State, and this is a dream come true. '(My wife, Diann, and I were talking just before the news conference, and we both said we couldn't believe it. Well, we had better believe it and we had better get to work right away, because we have a lot of hard work ahead." Williams, 40, has been an assistant coach at the Southeastern Conference school the past two years under Bob Boyd, who announced in early January he was stepping down at the end of the season.

Boyd coached five years at the school, leaving with a 55-87 mark. Boyd endorsed Williams for the job' earlier this month, but speculation had been that the school would hire from outside. Carr said Williams was the most impressive candidate for the job. traveled to interview people all the country and each time I came back, I compared them to NO HAIL DAMAGE! PERFECT CONDITION! His only losing season was his first, when his 1947-48 team finished 8-14. He resigned as coach because of ill health after the I960-61 season, and assistant Roy Skinner succeeded him. "Those of us familiar with the SEC and Vanderbilt consider Bob Polk as the grandfather of modern basketball at Vandy and Roy Skinner as the father," said the Commodores' current coach, C. M. Newton.

Polk built the Vanderbilt program from the floor up. His first team played in an abandoned military gymnasium. The university sold 14 season tickets that year, and before each home game Polk went to the gymnasium early to chalk numbers on the floor in front of the season ticket holders' seats. He went to Vanderbilt after having been an assistant at Georgia Tech. Upon his arrival, Vanderbilt began awarding basketball scholarships, and he recruited many players from his native Indiana.

Born in Boonville, Polk played varsity basketball at Evansville College, where he received a bachelor's degree in education. He taught in high school before entering the Navy in World War II. After resigning as Vanderbilt coach, Polk worked on the university's medical school staff before returning to sports in 1965 as head coach and athletic director at Trinity College in San Antonio, Texas. He was Southland Conference Coach of the Year in 1967 and the NCAA's National College Coach of the Year in 1968. He moved to St.

Louis University in 1969 as basketball coach and assistant professor. In 1974, his final season at St Louis, Polk was named Coach of the Year in the Missouri Valley Conference. Polk became head coach at Rice University in 1974 and retired from coaching in June 1977. In September 1977, he became assistant athletic director under Gene Bartow at Alabama-Birmingham, remaining Heathcote, who also won the award in 1978, guided the Spartans to third place with a 12-6 conference record and a 21-7 overall mark. Heathcote received 105 first-place votes and 431 points.

Bob Knight of Indiana was second with 56 first-place votes and 281 points. Gene Keady of Purdue was third at 14-189 and Bill Frieder of champion Michigan, last year's winner, was fourth at 16-141. of our cars 1 were hail damaged! IN STOCK CARS ONLY And we've got the deal. But Crum stopped short of saying that Ellison-Daugherty would be the decisive factor. "I don't think you can say any one matchup is the key, because every time you say that someone else beats you," he said. "North Carolina isn't a one-dimensional team and we aren't either. One of the reasons both of us are where we are is because we have excellent balance.

Then ev-erybpdy would have been saying Louisville couldn't win the big jBench strength may decide the game, Crum predicted.

"This type of game a lot of times comes down to how well the subs play," he said. "You put in one or two and they produce for you and the other team's doesn't, then you probably have a good chance to win, because there's not a whole lot of difference in the starting fives when you get this far." of L's primary reserves are 6-foot-7 junior Mark McSwain and 6-7 freshman Tony Kimbro. "We've got to be able to handle their changing defenses," he said, "the traps and things they do to try to keep you out of your set offense. How well we handle that will have a lot to do with the outcome of the game." Both clubs like to operate at a fast pace, so an up-tempo game is expected. Forward Billy Thompson was asked if of would like to see a game in the 70s or 80s. "I'd like to see it in the 100s," he said. Perhaps the game's most significant matchup is of L's 6-9 freshman center Pervis Ellison against North Carolina's 6-1 1 senior Brad Daugherty, who is averaging 20.2 points and leads the nation in field-goal percentage at 65.1.

"He's an excellent player," Ellison said. "He doesn't take any bad shots; he shoots within his range." Ellison compared Daugherty to Kansas' 7-1 Greg Dreiling, whom he has met twice this season. "Dreiling is a little wider than Daugherty, but Brad has a few more moves than him," Ellison said. "How well Pervis contains Daugherty will have a lot to do with it," Crum said.
