He is the team's career scoring leader, a holder of 19 club records and the No. 19 in points in National Football League history.

Now he's looking for work. The Bears decided to go with a younger player and a smaller salary, choosing Canadian Football League veteran Carlos Huerta as their kicker yesterday and cutting the 34-year-old Butler. "It was really close. We had to look at it and say, 'Is Carlos a guy we believe can do And the decision was yes," said Bears coach Dave Warm-stedt. Butler, an 11-year veteran, has scored 1,116 points, fifth best among active players.

In 1985 as a rookie fourth-round draft choice, he made 31 of 38 field goals during the Bears' championship season and then booted three more in the Super Bowl against New England. During the current preseason, Butler didn't miss on three field-goal attempts. Huerta, who kicked a 27-yarder through the rain against the Kansas City Chiefs in the final preseason game Thursday night, was 3 for 4 in the exhibition games. Money also may have been a consideration. Butler was scheduled to make a base salary of $500,000 this season and Huerta, 27, the league minimum of $130,000.

Butler, who left Halas Hall early yesterday morning after meeting with Wannstedt, was not available for comment. But earlier in the week he offered this assessment: "Basically it boils down to two choices they can make. They can pick the kicker that kicks it longer, strong- NABF World Series MAJOR DIVISION At Derby City Field Yesterday Stratford (Conn.) 4. St. Petersburg (Fla.) New York Giants 8.

Thursday night's exhibition game between the Chiefs and Bears was called off in the third quarter when a thunderstorm sent lightning shooting across Soldier Field. "You can't go back if you err," Chiefs coach Marty Schottenheimer said.

"If you make a mistake and there is a tragedy, you cannot go back and say 'I am It was in the best interest of everyone concerned that we conclude the game." The storm began at halftime and Eounded the lakefront area for a half-our. Referee Red Cashion sent the' teams to their locker rooms with 4:20 left in the third quarter, and moments later he called the game off for the safety of the players and fans. The Chiefs were ahead 14-10. Jaguars sign pass rusher Looking for additional help with the pass rush, the Jacksonville Jaguars signed former Pro Bowl defensive end Clyde Simmons. Simmons, 32, becomes the oldest player on the Jaguars.

For Arizona, Simmons had 11 sacks last year, tied for the fifth in the National Football Conference. The Jaguars had a league-low 17 sacks. Saints cut veteran QB Hugh Millen, the free-agent quarterback the New Orleans Saints signed this spring to provide experience at backup, was cut. The Saints released Millen, a 10-year NFL journeyman, to make room for defensive end Darren Mickell. iwcneiie Macxaii 71 cam berenot 74 L.

"This is a great group of athletes," U.S. coach Brad Hedrick said of his team. "They epitomize what the Para-lympics are about. They have trained rigorously and been responsible in their on- and off-court demeanor. This is a tremendous group of individuals." Hedrick said he was especially pleased with how the team shared playing time.

"They put their egos aside," he said. "All 12 players are all-stars and the greatest statement on their behalf is that they're willing to assume ondary) roles. They turn it on in those minutes that they're getting, in spite of the fact that the limelight can't be on them." Leaving the locker room one by one, the Americans were greeted by wives, parents, children all in or near tears. Mike Schlappi's 9-year-old son, Matthew, began sobbing as he hugged his dad. "There's just nothing much to do about it.

We've just got to finish strong," Schlappi, a three-time Para-; lympic veteran, told his son, who had flown to Atlanta from Sandy, with his mother to see the game. Randy Snow of Austin, Texas, whose 12 points snapped the Americans out of a sluggish start, scanned the stadium, his red-rimmed eyes looking for his father. "The immediacy of this loss is aw- ful," he said, trying to smile but not quite succeeding. "I'm 37 years old, and I've had a lot of lows." He paused. "Still," he continued, "the highs are definitely worth the lows." College football TODAY GAME FAVORITE POINTS UNDERDOG Texas 6Vi Young TOMORROW Penn State 3 Southern Cal By KAREN HILL Associated Press ATLANTA The Dream Wheelers woke up yesterday to an ugly reality: Their quest for gold has been de-toured toward the bronze.

It wasn't supposed to end this way for the U.S. men's Paralympic basketball team, dubbed "the Dream Team on wheels" by manager Marvin Lapi-cola. Not this year, their first chance to reclaim the gold medals stripped from them in 1992. Not this year, playing before home crowds. The U.S.

team hasn't lost in international competition in five years. It won the gold medal at the 1988 Para-lympics. It won again in Barcelona four years ago, though the team was disqualified because a player had used a banned painkiller. This year, the Americans were supposed to win again. But Thursday night, their fast-break style slammed into a wall of Australian defenders and an offensive whirlwind named Troy Sachs.

Sachs, who scored 28 points, led his teammates to a 63-57 upset. The Australians will play Great Britain for the gold tonight, just after the United States plays Spain for the bronze. The U.S. team seemed stunned after Thursday's loss, a close battle until the last minute. Players who minutes before had been racing up and down the court, their wheels a blur, seemed barely able to roll out of the locker room.

The crowd of 3,000, which had filled the Omni with deafening roars despite its small size, left the building in silence. Even members of the Australian team, waiting for the buses to take them back to the Paralympic Village, cautioned each other against celebrating too loudly while the Americans remained in the locker room. "Not here," one player said, "on the bus." "We've been slogging away at it for such a long time and never come closer than seventh before," said Australian guard Stuart Ewin, shaking his head in wonder.
