Fernando Vina added another sacrifice fly. Jim Abbott (0-3) gave up four runs and seven hits in 5 innings. At the plate, he popped up and flied out, leaving him 0 for 5 this season.

Bonds misses another game Barry Bonds has a bone spur in his left elbow and was out of the lineup for the second straight day as the San Francisco Giants played the Florida Marlins last night. Bonds, batting .366 with four home runs and 12 RBIs, was seeking a second opinion from San Jose Sharks physician Art Ting. Results of those tests were expected today. The All-Star left fielder's status remained day-to-day. "There's no determination until wa know what's wrong," manager Dusty Baker said.

Bonds had a magnetic resonance" imaging yesterday that revealed the spur. He missed Sunday's the Arizona Diamondbacks. Stan Javier took Bonds' place iti left field, and Ellis Burks assumed' Bonds' No. 3 spot in the order. Bonds, an eight-time All-Star, has-been on the disabled list just once in his 14-year career.

There had been speculation have been injured during day's brawl with the Diamondbacks, during which Giants third baseman, Charlie Hayes and Arizona pitcher Todd Stottlemyre got into a bench clearing melee. "Let me clear that up right now' Barry told me it was bothering on Friday during batting practice," Baker said. "That wasn't it at all, that's 20 years of throwing." Associated Press Struggling rookie J.D. Drew hit his first homer of the season and drove in three runs, leading Kent Botten-field and the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 6-2 last night.

Drew, who began the night batting just .176, also tripled, singled and scored three times. The Cardinals won for the fifth time in six games. Bottenfield (3-0) pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed only three hits, giving him an 0.98 ERA. He struck out four and walked three. After Ricky Bottalico pitched a scoreless eighth for St.

Louis, an odd play helped the Brewers score twice in the ninth. Milwaukee loaded the bases with no outs against Mike Mohler, and pinch-hitter Brian Banks hit a fly ball to center field that Drew dropped for an error. Brandon Cromer has just two hits this season, but he's made them count. His second hit a two-run home run came yesterday as the Louisville RiverBats smacked four homers and defeated Richmond 5-3 in an International League baseball game. Cromer's homer in the eighth inning gave the RiverBats a 5-2 lead. Then in the bottom of the inning, he snuffed out a Richmond rally with an unassisted double play on Toby Rum-field's line drive. Cromer's other hit was a grand slam earlier this season at home against Columbus.

Louisville's Kevin Barker had solo homers in the second and fourth, and Luis Ortiz added a solo shot in the fourth. The back-to-back shots in the fourth broke a 1-1 tie. Fot the Braves, Gabe Whatley and Howafd Battle had solo homers. Battle knocked in the final run with an eighth4nning single. Rod Henderson (1-0), who won 11 games last season as Louisville's ace, allowed four hits and two runs in six innings.

Reggie Harris struck out two in the ninth for his first save. Ruben Quevedo (0-2) allowed five hits and three runs in five innings. Louisville, which returns home tonight to start a three-game series against Norfolk at 7:15, went 3-3 on the road trip. Wohlers to stay with Reds for now Recently acquired reliever Mark Wohlers will work out with Cincinnati for a while rather than going to the minor leagues to try to solve his control troubles.

Wohlers went on the 15-day DL after the Reds got him from Atlanta Friday in a trade. The original plan was to have him report to Triple-A Indianapolis yesterday. But the Reds changed that after Wohlers threw very well in a workout Sunday. Wohlers will report to Indianapolis at some point, but there is no timetable. General manager Jim Bowden said "it might be two weeks, it might be two months" before Wohlers is added to the Reds' roster.

"Mark is enthusiastic and open to any new ideas, which is very encouraging," Bowden said. Associated Press Cal Ripken, baseball's Iron Man, was placed on the disabled list yesterday for the first time in his 19-year career because of a bad back. The Baltimore third baseman missed his fourth game this season Sunday because of nerve irritation in his lower back. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Sunday. Ripken, 38, received a cortisone shot yesterday and was advised to stay off the field for a couple of weeks.

He's batting only .178 and has five errors in eight games. "There's no question his back has affected his general manager Frank Wren said. "Right now we're going with rehabilitation and therapy. He will get a few more cortisone shots and take the full two weeks to work his way back." Wren added that surgery is not an option at this time. Last Sept.

O'Donnell led the Bengals to two of their three victories last season but struggled to produce points and move the offense consistently. Bengals general manager Mike Brown granted O'Donnell's request to release him so he would have time to hook up with another team.

"This is what he wants," Brown said. "He wants to be freed to sign elsewhere as soon as possible." 'Skins drop Allen, Dishman Terry Allen, who holds Washington's single-season rushing record, was released by the Redskins. The move had been expected. Allen, 31, was sidelined repeatedly with injuries the past three seasons. He missed six games last year with a sprained ankle but gained a team-high 700 yards on 148 carries.

On Saturday, the Redskins released former DeSales star Cris Dish-man. The 33-year-old cornerback played the past two seasons with Washington, starting 31 of 32 games and recording six interceptions. He's an 11-year NFL veteran. ceptions for 243 more. He also scored eight TDs.

IU defensive end Aaron Williams signed with the Arizona Cardinals. The 6-5, 263-pound Williams had 27 tackles, including eight for losses. Bengals cut O'Donnell The Cincinnati Bengals released quarterback Neil O'Donnell, two days after they decided to go in another direction by drafting Akili Smith.

O'Donnell, 32, was released nine months after the Bengals signed him From C-J and Wire Dispatches Imagine quarterbacks from the state of Kentucky being the No. 1 pick in the National Football League draft in successive years. You can't? ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. can. University of Kentucky quarterback Tim Couch was the first pick this year, and on Sunday Kiper named Louisville quarterback Chris Redman as the top QB in next year's draft.

He listed Redman as the third-best senior, behind Florida State receiver Peter Warrick and Arizona State running back J.R. Redmond. Kiper did not speculate on which underclassmen might enter the draft. Redman is 244 completions and 340 attempts shy of the NCAA Division I-A records set by Brigham Young's Ty Detmer from 1988-91. In three seasons, Redman has completed 714 of 1,190 passes for 8,894 yards and 55 touchdowns.

Detmer's yardage record appears safe he threw for 15,031. Area free-agent signings Former UK offensive tackle Kris Comstock signed with the Cleveland Browns, his Marc Breit said. Breit, an attorney in Louisville, said Comstock's contract is for two years and includes a signing bonus. Comstock, a 6-foot-8, 304-pounder, was a three-year starter. He chose the Browns over the San Francisco 49ers after talking with both teams' coaches yesterday, Breit said.

He'll leave Thursday for the Browns' rookie minicamp. UK cornerback Marvin Love signed with the St. Louis Rams, and offensive guard Mike Webster went to the Washington Redskins. Louisville offensive lineman Rick Nord, who agreed to a free-agent contract with New Orleans on Sunday night, said coach Mike Ditka was optimistic about his chances. "Last year he said he kept a nose guard that didn't have the best numbers but he played hard," said Nord, a three-year starter who will attend the Saints' rookie minicamp later this week.

"He looks past the numbers and goes by how hard the guy plays. That helps me because my numbers are sorry." Indiana fullback Chris Gall signed with the Indianapolis Colts.
