TWO FORMER Western Athletic Conference quarterbacks are not as happy as a newly-crowned World Series champion team or the UT El Paso Miners coming off a win over Utah They are left to right in alphabetical and seniority order Gary Keithley and Danny White The St Louis Cardinals defeated the Washington Redskins 17-10 Sunday in a National Football League game It was close all the way So it surprising that Jim Hart went the distance for the Cards But it was surprising that Gary Keithley do any punting for the Cards They had a rookie doing that job while Keithley stood on the sidelines for the whole game Keithley the former UTEP quarterback has good reason to be disappointed In his rookie season with the Cards he pinch-hit a few times for the injured Hart and did a cool and efficient job each time It looked like he consolidated himself as the Cards No 2 quarterback But over the winter Don Coryell traded for the quarterback he had at San Diego Dennis Shaw The inference was clear that he meant to make Shaw his No 2 man back of Hart and relegate Keithley to No 3 But the former Miner supposedly still had the punting job Shaw and Keithley made appearances in pre-season games In one game Shaw quarterbacked for a half and Keithley for the other half Each did their job very well Now Keithley is out on a limbo as the season enters its third week GENERAL By BOB INGRAM San Diego State University Aztecs are 10-2 against Texas opposition and they expect to make it 11-2 Saturday night in El Paso although they have not scouted the Miners in person They meet UTEP which they are scouting by films in the Sun Bowl at 7:30 pm Saturday The Houston Cougars are the only Texas team that has beaten San Diego and done it twice The Aztecs have won all their matches against other Texas foes that include North Texas West Texas' UT-Arlington and Texas Southern THE AZTECS No 1 in the nation in college passing a year ago are expected to put the ball in the air a lot here They threw the ball 41 times in their loss to Arizona in their 17-10 loss to the Wildcats on Sept 14 Their No 1 quarterback is Craig Penrose red-shirted a year ago Their No 2 quarterback Kevin Sneed hit 72 passes for 131 tosses for 1010 yards last year Their top receivers are Dwight McDonald and Nate Fergerson HOWEVER their top player is a defensive man Bobby Henderson who is being boomed for All-America Their leading running backs are Bill Kramer at fullback who had 155 yards in 26 carries and 131 of them against Tampa University which the Aztecs defeated 28-25 last Saturday Harold Williams a former sprinter at UTEP is a wide receiver on the team but is not likely to make the trip to El Paso San piego also has a player named Don Willis a linebacker The Miners Don Willis is the -starting fullback CLAUDE GILBERT the San Diego coach is in his second season at the school He had a 9-2-1 record last year Don Coryell now coaching the St Louis Cardinals in the National Football League coached San Diego for five years and established the Aztecs as a national power This team is credited with being a better defensive aggegation best earns Gilbert has not sent scouts to see the Miners play this season but has obtained a film of game with Pacific and will get the Miners' game with Utah on an exchange basis For the Miners Gil Bartosh the head coach says the honeymoon is over if he can put the games the Miners have played so far in that category The Miners worked out in the wet Sun Bowl last night with the likelihood that all the players of the team will be in starting condition Saturday with the exception of John Hahn at center be replaced by Mike Herron a freshman who performed snap duties after Hahn was hurt in the Utah game THIS WEEK ONLY! Horns vs Tech- Royal Expects To Use Leaks More Saturday AUSTIN Tex Texas Longhorn coach Darrell Royal says All-American Roosevelt Leaks should improve a little each game he plays at the right halfback position And freshman fullback Earl Campbell who has replaced Leaks at that position is going to be carrying the ball a little more when the Longhorns meet Texas Tech Saturday in Lubbock in the Southwest Conference opener If those two ball carriers along with freshman halfback Gralyn Wyatt and quarterback Marty Akins dent defenses then the Longhorns have a problem Royal said THE TEXAS COACH overjoyed at his team's aerial performance against Wyoming last Saturday even though the Horns won easily 34-7 pass offense the other night was almost nonexistent" Royal said not getting good pass routes run and when we do our protection Pointing to the showdown with Tech Royal said we're not able to get it on the ground we could be in Royal said Akins will start at quarterback against Tech but Mike Pressley will also see plenty of action LEAKS WHO PLAYED for the first time against Wyoming since undergoing knee surgery last spring ran and blocked well from the halfback position doesn't have the same quickness he had but I expect him to get better right Royal said He also praised Campbell's play against Wyoming in slipping through the line and getting downfield to throw blocks course if going through there that slick he to be having the ball more" Royal said hoping be giving him the ball THE LONGHORN coach said the Red Raiders may have been looking to the Longhorn game last week when they were tied by New Mexico think going to be a he said of Saturday's game had a tossup game with them last year and got about the same kind of losses we had I imagine be favored but I don't view it all-purpose quarterback of Arizona State was a high draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys White didn't care about playing in the shadow of Roger Staubach of the Cowboys He chose to sign with the Memphis Southmen of the World Football League believing he had a good chance to be the regular quarterback Lo and behold he was beaten off the job by John Huarte a former Notre Dame star who had made a tour of the old American Football League and the National Football League playing with Houston Boston Philadelphia and Kansas City and winding up with Chicago which play him and gave him his release White still did the punting for the Southmen Also he did some mop and broom work going in at quarterback when Memphis games were decided It exactly the job the All-American quarterback at Arizona State had in mind when he signed The Manning Threat HE DID GET HXS chance last week against the Chicago Fire Huarte was hurt and White took over He passed for 136 yards in a quarter and half of play One of his strikes was a 56-yarder Another was for a seven-yard touchdown He had six completions out of nine throws The Southmen defeated the Chicago Fire 23-7 Tommy Hudspeth backfield coach of the Chicago Fire has seen too much of White He had to coach against him for three years in the WAC As ill-fated coach a year ago Tommy saw White take the football and run 80 yards for a touchdown against the Miners in Arizona 54-13 victory talk that Huarte who is 30 may not be around for the Southmen next season That would give White the Memphis quarterback job by default something he exactly want either He wanted to earn it not sure that even get the job now a lot of talk about Memphis going after Archie Manning the celebrated quarterback of the New Orleans Saints Archie would be quite a drawing card in Memphis which is close to Mississippi which is Manning country Danny must still be disillusioned think a lot of Gary in St Louis and expect to keep him" said A Keithley father of the former UTEP quarterback from his home in Alvin Texas But doubtful if Gary is happy with all that idle time on his hands He and Danny might go in together and organize another league I Brock Gets Police Guard I given up the fewest points in the league Coryell recognized the great defensive effort by bringing two of the defensive standouts tackle Ron Yankowski and rookie middle linebacker Greg Hartle to the quarterback luncheon were all demoralized in losing Dave Butz and Tom Banks in the Coryell said Butz a mammoth defensive tackle and Banks the starting center on offense both are out for the season with knee injuries if a team has character it tends to rise to the occasion" the coach added had great expectations for Mark Arne son but he brbke his hand u3D GREATAMERICAN Extra charge tor Mo (UPI) History won't repeat itself this season if coach Don Coryell of the St Louis football Cardinals has anything to say about it remember last Coryell said gonna try to reverse that a bit this He was speaking of 1973's start when St Louis opened with two wins en route to a 3-9-1 mark The surprising Cardinals have matched that opening this year with wins over two high-powered offensive teams Philadelphia and Washington THE CARDINALS' 17-10 victory Sunday over the Redskins was the first St Louis win at Washington since 1967 The victory coupled with the 7-3 opener over the Eagles leaves St Louis atop the National football eastern division In allowing only 13 points over the two games the Cardinals have Mrffflm KING EDWARD one or a handful CREDIT A multi-billion dollar a year industry!
