Valparaiso led throughout the first half except for a 31-all tie and was on top at the intermission, 33-31.

The lead changed hands eight times early in the third quarter, but the Crusaders led the rest of the way after going on top at 43-42. Bill Doehrman, with 30 points for Valparaiso, was the big difference. Carl Niedermeier led Evansville with 17. free throw apiece to make it 73-68. With four seconds to go, Captain Dick Shrewsbury sank a long shot to wing up the scoring.

The win gives Union a 6-2 record in the league and Centre a 3-3 record. 2 nationally, had to turn on all their steam in protecting their Big Seven Conference basketball lead with a 55-52 victory over Missouri tonight. It was Kansas State's sixth conference win against no defeats, compared to a 5-1 record for the second-place Kansas Hayhawks. Kansas State's great center, Dick Knostman, tossed a field goal with a minute and a half to go, for the final score. Missouri gave Kansas State the same type of courageous battle it did Kansas a month ago when the Jay hawks were rated No. 1 nationally.

FOR "HER ference lead tonight Two of Iowa's starters, 6-foot-8 center Chuck Darling and freshman forward Deacon Davis, played the entire second half with four fouls charged against them. Darling led all scorers with 26 points. Iowa trailed through most of the first half, but took the lead again in the third quarter as forward Ev Cochrane spearheaded a sharp attack with one-handed push shots from far out. The crowd of 16,000 screamed itself hoarse as the Hawkeyes opened up a 55-50 lead at the end of the third quarter, scoring 22 points to the Illinis' 15. They never trailed thereafter. Five Illinois men fouled out in the hectic game, including 6-foot-9 Johnny Kerr and Bob Peterson. Four of them were waved to the sidelines in the last five minutes as the Hawkeyes, trying to protect a six-point lead, repeatedly took the ball out of bounds rather than shoot free throws and permit the Illini to score. Minnesota Wins 54-47 Madison, Feb.

9 (JP) Minnesota's basketball team raced away from Wisconsin in the second half tonight to whip the Badgers 54-47. Trailing 31-29 at half-time, Minnesota outscored Wisconsin 16-4 in the third period and held the Badgers to nearly even terms in the final quarter. It was Minnesota's sixth Big Ten victory in nine starts and marked Wisconsin's fourth set back in six circuit tilts. The Badgers were cold in the third period picking up a single field goal and two free throws. Chuck Mencel, freshman guard, led the Gopher scoring in the second half, scoring 11 of his 19 points as the Gophers took command.

In the final period, Minnesota went into a stall, taking the ball out of bounds on most free throws and sinking its four baskets on setups. Michigan Wins 71-69 Evanston, Feb. 9 (JP) Michigan overcame a 13-point deficit to nip Northwestern 71-69 in a bBig Ten basketball game tonight. It was Michigan's second conference victory in seven starts. Northwestern, leading 56-43 in the third period, still held a seven-point bulge, 61-54, with eight minutes of the game left.

But Michigan rallied furiously, had the score tied at 68-all with three minutes left and clinched the contest with Jim Skala's basket with 1:40 remaining. Doug Lawrence added an insurance free throw. Skala paced both teams with 21 points on nine baskets and three free throws. In a first meeting at Ann Ar bor, Northwestern scored a 59-57 victory. Michigan's game-winning rally was sparked jointly by Skala and guard Don Eaddy, who produced 12 vital points.

It was after Don Blaha sank a free throw to give Northwestern a 69-68 edge that Skala connected with the deciding basket. Forward Larry Dellefield led Northwestern with 15 points. Michigan State Wins East Lansing, Feb. 9 (JP) Michigan State jumped into an early lead and kept on building to beat Ohio State, 70-52, and shove the Buckeyes deeper toward the cellar in a battle among the also-rans of the Western Conference basketball race here tonight. The victory gave Michigan State a .500 average of four wins and four losses in conference play.

Ohio State now has lost five and won three in Big Ten competition. The score was 6-6 early in the first period when Michigan State started hitting and ran the score up to 22-6 before Ohio State managed another basket. The Spartans had a 22-8 lead at the end of the period. Forward Keith Stackhouse, leading scorer -with 19 points, was red-hot in the quarter, making six baskets for Michigan State. Center Paul Ebert, leading Ohio State scorer all season, collected 19 points for the Buckeyes on five baskets' and nine free throws.

9 (AP) LaSalle College and Murray State put on the greatest scoring exhibition in the his tory of Convention Hall bas- ketball tonight as LaSalle came out with a 105-82 victory in the second half of a college basketball doubleheader. Feb. 9 (JP) A determined Morehead Col lege basketball team came back to defeat Marshall in an Ohio Valley Conference game tonight 54-53. Some 4,000 fans in Memorial Fieldhouse found it hard to believe that this was the same Eagle aggregation that Marshall had beaten earlier in the season 75- 69, on the Kentuckians' floor. Marshall's star forward Walter was bottled effectively and held to only three points. Substitute Bob Lowe for Marshall was the home team's heavy gun with 16 points.

72-57. The Mountaineers got off to a 5-0 lead and never were headed. They led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter, 35-32 at the half, and 54-45 after three quarters. They lost 69-59 at Wilmington on January 7, but this time they were able to break through the Ohio team's zone defense. Charles Baker led the victory offensively with 21 points.

Garland Godsey added 18 to Berea's total. High for Wilmington were Jim Coldiron and Babe Perkins with 14 apiece. Union Whips Centre Danville, Fehh 9 (JP) Union College hung up another K.I.A.C. basketball victory tonight whipping Centre College 73-70 in a hotly contested game. Making the Brown (left) and Bob Naber Pettit Snaps Point Marks Set by Groza Big Center Tallies 32 As L.S.U. Tops Tulane Baton Rouge, Feb. 9 (JP) Bob Pettit set two Southeastern Conference records tonight in leading Louisiana State University to a 78-66 basketball victory over Tulane. The lanky L.S.U. sophomore scored 32 points, enough to wipe out the old total field goal and total points records for a conference season, set by Kentucky's Alex Groza in 1949.

Pettit's performance, Joe Dean's 20 points and sparkling floof play by Ned Clark and Bobby Yates spelled revenge for L.S.U.,' which lost earlier in the season to Tulane in New Orleans. Tulane center Don Holt and forward Fritz Schulz led Tulane, both with 14 points. Earlier, Pettit set a new S.E.C. record with 50 points against Georgia. Pettit now has 291 points for the season in 11 conference games.

Groza had 281 in 13 games. Pettit has 114 field goals against S.E.C. teams. Groza had 103. Pettit still has three S.E.C.

games to play this year. Commodores Breeze Nashville, Feb. 9 (JP) Vanderbilt's Commodores rambled to an 86-61 victory over Missis sippi state tonigni, cnainiug their sixth Southeastern Conference basketball triumph. Vanderbilt played fast ball during the first half and held a half-timp advantage of 44-30. The Mississippi squad dropped in only eight points during the third quarter, but bounced back with 23 in the final period.

State's Coyt Vance, playing both center and forward, was individual star of the game. He dumped in 30 points, highest total recorded against Vanderbilt by any individual this season. He now has a 17-game total of 366 points. Jack Heldman hit for 18 for the Commodores, who have lost four conference matches. Missis-sipi State has won five, lost five.

It was St. Louis' game from the start as they built up a 17-2 lead in the opening five minutes and led 22-10 after the quarter. With Notre Dame under control, the fans' attention was heightened in the second half as Steiner tried to break a school scoring record 31 points set by Lbu Lehman in the 1949-50 season but Steiner could only tie it. He became tense as he neared the mark and missed shots similar to ones he made easily earlier. Steiner sat out at least four minutes in the second quarter and a short period in the final stanza.

Leroy Leslie led Notre Dame scoring with 21 points. Six baskets by the team captain in the first half kept Notre Dame from a worse defeat. Dick Rosenthal. Notre Dame's high scorer for the season with a 14-point average, was held to one field goal, and that was in the final period. Fast-breaking by the Billikens and exceptional work on taking rebounds led to their big lead.

They hit 31 of 94 shots, racking up a .474 percentage in the first period to just .260 for Notre Dame. The overall shooting percentages, however, were close .329 for St. Louis to .323 for the visitors. Nebraska Clips Oklahoma Lincoln, Feb. 9 (JP) Nebraska washed out a three- point deficit in slightly more than three minutes tonight to defeat Oklahoma 67-66 in "a torrid Big Seven basketball game.
