Travis Henry ran for 135 yards and Donte' Stall-worth turned a short pass into a 51-yard scoring play to help No. 12-ranked Tennessee to a 19-16 victory over No. 22 Southern Mississippi last night before a Nevland Stadium-record crowd of 108,061. The Volunteers' untried defense stifled the Golden Eagles until two long touchdown drives in the fourth quarter.

While Tennessee's offense struggled behind new quarterbacks Joey Mathews, A. J. Suggs and Eric Locke, the defense contained Southern Miss until the Vols had built a 19-3 lead on Stallworth's touchdown late in the third quarter. Southern Miss managed 303 yards of total offense. Jeff Kelly was sacked njne times, and the Golden Eagles' running game was held to 71 yards on 31 attempts.
