76-89 .00 .00 Partly Wichita henderstorms 72-85 Answers from Question: Why does Answer: That increase is called a need that big purchased-gas adjustment, and it gas-price increase reflects only the higher price we that will go into have to begin paying August 1 to effect August the pipeline company from which we buy the gas. We don't add one cent to it for profit; we simply collect the money from our customers and pay it to the pipeline company which, in turn, pays it out to those who produce the gas. The higher prices we have to pay for gas and pass along to our customers result mostly from 1) higher prices that the gas producers are allowed to charge under the terms of the Natural Gas Policy Act of 1978, and 2) gradual depletion of the available supply of older, lower-cost gas and its replacement by new, higher-cost gas. The purchased -gas adjustment that will go into effect August 1 is a painful one; the biggest we've seen yet. We don't like it, but there isn't anything we can do about it.

If we are to continue supplying you with gas, we have to pay the price, regulated by the Federal Government, that the pipeline charges us for it, and the only source we have for the money to pay for the gas is our customers. The annual increase in our cost of gas, and in the corresponding increase to our customers, will be almost five times as much as our entire gas operation earned for common stockholders during the past 12 months. Unfortunately, under the pricing policies of the Natural Gas Policy Act, we can expect a continuation of such increases in the years ahead. But without these higher prices to encourage exploration and development of gas sources, we might never have overcome the shortages that confronted us just a few years ago.
