4. Connecticut rips Bucknell LEWISBURG, Pa. (AP) Quarterback Ken Sweitzer passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third -as Connecticut defeated Bucknell in the season opener for both teams yesterday. Christian County's outstanding junior class continues to make a name for itself in the high school football wars. David Griffith, a cornerback, and tailback Rod Smith starred as unbeaten Christian County improved its record to 4-0 by beating Warren Central 25-7 in a Class 4-A district game Friday night at Hopkinsville.

Griffith intercepted three passes and Smith gained 7 yards rushing on 11 carries. Smith, one of 47 juniors on a 72-man varsity, scored Christian County's last two touchdowns on runs of 13 and 22 yards. Warren Central (1-3) took a 7-0 lead when Mike Gentry picked up a fumble and ran 18 yards to score. Christian County is in its first season under coach Dan Goble. Elsewhere in Kentucky: Senior quarterback Mike Whi-taker completed 14 of 19 passes for 222 yards and five touchdowns to pace Leslie County (2-1) over Pine- Campbell County, the state's No.

2-ranked team in The Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings, lost a crucial 4-A district encounter with Dixie Heights 14-13 at Alexandria. Dixie Heights (3-0) took a 14-7 lead when Tom Richardson passed seven yards to Lee Keifer for a fourth-quarter touchdown. It was Richardson's second TD pass of the game. Campbell County (3-1) crept to 14-13 on an 11-yard TD run by Jeff Myers with 1:41 left in the game. A two-point conversion run failed, but Campbell County tried an onside kickoff and recovered the ball on the Dixie 40.

In six plays, Campbell County drove to the Dixie 18 where with 18 seconds remaining it missed a field goal. Myers rushed for 159 yards on 32 carries. Marty Maloney led Dixie with 72 yards on 14 carries. The win avenged a 39-26 loss Dixie suffered to Campbell County last year, the win eventually sending Campbell County to the 4-A playoffs. Franklin-Simpson, the state AAA champion the past two years, won its third straight game by beating Mayfield 12-10 at Franklin.

After trailing 10-0 at halftime, Franklin-Simpson (3-1) took the lead on third-quarter touchdown runs of 48 yards Friday night's linescores Gatti and Wilson star as Bourbons explode for split and 4-2 lead x-overtime. The Kentucky Bourbons moved within one victory of their first United Professional Softball League World Series title Friday night when they rallied for a 14-11 victory and a split of their double-header with the New England Pilgrims at Blake Field.

The split left the Bourbons ahead 4-2 in the best-of-nine series and needing only one more victory during the weekend to sew up the title. New England won the first game 11-10 on catcher Joe Martone's two-run homer with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Martone also hit a grand-slam homer in the third, giving the Pilgrims a 5-2 lead. The Bourbons trailed 11-9 after six innings of Friday night's second game. Bill Gatti hit a tying two-run homer and Rick Wilson a tie-breaking double in the winning five-run explosion.

The rally started when Greg Whit-lock singled for his fourth hit in four at-bats. Greg Kemp, who singled home the last two runs, also went 4 for 4, while Gatti and Dave Whit-lock, who contributed a triple, each went 2 for 3. roll on by James Phillips and one yard by Mike Metcalf. Franklin-Simpson wasn't assured of the win until it blocked a field goal attempt by Mayfield in the final seconds. Mayfield (1-2) got the ball with 50 seconds left to play and drove to the Franklin-Simpson four before trying the field goal.

Donnie Whitlow and Jeff England ran wild as Glasgow (3-1) cruised past Butler County (2-2) 54-0 at Glasgow. Whitlow scored once and gained 101 yards on seven carries. England had 106 yards on seven carries and scored one TD. Tim McMakin scored on a 50-yard punt return and a 90-yard kick-off return as Nelson County (2-2) whipped Bullitt Central (1-3) 20-6 in a 4-A district game. "McMakin has excellent speed and the blocking was there," Nelson County coach Don Smith said.

"He hit the holes at the right time." Nelson County is 1-0 in district play, Bullitt Central 0-1. The state's longest losing streaks continued. Tompkinsville (2-1) handed Clinton County (0-3) its 38th straight loss, 47-7. Green County (3-1) pinned the 34th consecutive defeat on Louisville Shawnee, 14-8. SOFTBALL The victory made academic a protest by Kentucky manager Cob-bie Harrison in the third inning.

The protest was lodged when one umpire overruled another, costing the Bourbons a run on an appeal play. On what appeared to be a sacrifice fly by Harrison, the Pilgrims protested that Paul Campbell had left third base too soon. In the confusion, the New England catcher tagged Harrison, who was en route to the dugout, instead of Campbell. Plate umpire Hank Koritkowski ruled Campbell was safe, but when the Pilgrims appealed, third base umpire Tom Raucci, the crew chief, reversed the decision. Steve Stewart, usually a starter, got the Kentucky victory in relief.

He came on with the bases loaded and three runs across in the fifth inning, shutting the door on the Pilgrims. Campbell gave up Martone's winning homer in the opener. Kentucky batted around in the sixth inning of that game, collecting six runs on eight hits, all singles. HARNESS RACING Zeller pushed Kayway Lady to the front with an extremely fast 28-second first quarter. She was still fourth at the half, but Dancer had begun to ease her toward the leader, Kayway Lady.

The half was paced in 58 seconds. Surprisingly, Kayway Lady was still hanging tough with just a quarter-mile to go. She had raced just Wednesday night in the $25,000 American-National Stake at Sportsman's Park in Chicago and was shipped to Louisville to race with just one day's rest. The grind began to tell in mid-stretch, though, as Kayway Lady began to tire and Dancer started cutting into her lead with Watering Can. Favored Shergar, the winner of this year's English and Irish derbies, faded and finished fourth.

It was only his second loss. Glint of Gold, a 4-1 shot, finished second. Bustomi, with Lester Piggott aboard, took third. Cut Above gave jockey Joe Mercer his fourth victory in the race and his second in succession. He guided Light Cavalry to victory in last year's St.

Leger. Cut Above, owned by Sir John Astor and trained by Dick Hern, was well beaten by Shergar in the Irish Derby. ville (1-2) 48-6. Wendell Maggard, a tailback, ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns in only six carries as Leslie County breezed to its second straight win after losing to Ashland Blazer in the opener. Middlesboro (4-0) won its battle of the unbeatens with Clark County (3-1) 36-0, but senior quarterback Brian Williams suffered a neck injury in the fourth quarter.

The extent of Williams' injury is not known, but he was taken to a hospital after being Injured with 11:50 to Play. Williams kicked three extra points, a 35-yard field goal and scored a touchdown on a one-yard run before leaving the game. Middlesboro plays host to Leslie County on Friday night.
