t -1 r5f! (7) f A b L, D4 THE COURIER-JOURNAL KENTUCKY WEDNESDAY. JUNE 3, 1998 700 Governor's Scholars chosen for five-week summer program The Courier-Journal The state of Kentucky has released the names of 700 outstanding high school juniors who will be Governor's Scholars this summer. Students from public and private schools competed for selection. They represent 115 of the state's 120 counties. A statewide selection committee chose the participants from nominees from each Kentucky school district. Selection criteria included academic records, test scores, teacher recommendations, extracurricular activities and essays. The program is free. Students will spend five weeks at either Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights or Centre College in Danville. They will have a busy academic schedule in the sciences, humanities and the arts, plus a variety of other activities. They also will participate in community projects, seminars and other activities that are often initiated by the students themselves. The following participants are from outside the Louisville area. (If there is no high school after a student's name, the school has the county's name). The list also identifies the few scholars whose home county differs from the one where they go to school. "But we certainly do represent an element of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, and we're not going to disband." Mackey said he received news of the Southern Baptists of Kentucky's action by fax. "One of my dreams was that Kentucky Baptists would be able to work together," Mackey said. "I think this is maybe one indication of this desire manifesting itself among Kentucky Baptists, and I'm certainly grateful for that." The Southern Baptists of Kentucky did not continue with plans to stage annual evangelistic rallies and publish a quarterly newspaper or magazine to feature the work of both the Southern Baptist Convention and the seminary in Louisville. off the force But after parents complained to police about the officers' tactics, Swain and Zapata were charged with abusing their authority and coercing and threatening juveniles. After a three-day, closed-door hearing, the city commission found them guilty on all counts.
