Guild Festival Will Feature Silhouettes Few of the American Colonists could afford oil portraits of the family, with the result that silhouettes became popular as a means of preserving a likeness. Today, silhouettes are cherished not only because they are within the budget of everyone, but because of their decorative value in every type of decor. Mrs.

Gordon Bramble, Janesville silhouette artist, will be featured at the Holiday Festival of the Congregational Guild Thursday, Nov. 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. and will be available Saturday, Nov. 16, at the same hours. Appointments for sittings are to be made with Mrs.

Warren Stenstrom, 2217 Newman St. Married to a local builder, and mother of two sons, Mrs. Bramble studied portraiture under Joseph Kelleher and the late E. M. R.

Weiner, Beloit artist whose portraits are in many Janesville homes. Mrs. Bramble enjoyed the painting of children, but found them too-active subjects and turned to the medium of silhouette cuttings. She has done several complicated cuttings of Saint Francis and the Birds, Colonial Lady at Spinning Wheel, Horse and Wagon and Little Girl Pointing to Nest of Robins in a Tree. Nellie Custis, granddaughter of Martha Washington, traced the shadows cast on a wall by her grandmother and George Washington, and from them cut the famous silhouettes, two of which were destroyed by fire.

One remaining rare cutting is displayed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. Mrs. Bramble requires only a few minutes to cut a silhouette with the subject before here. The Holiday Festival will be held in the new half-million dollar educational building on Pleasant street. Opening at 11 a.m., specialities for sale will be doll beds and blankets, wooden compotes, silver holders, many types of candles, hand embroidered Page 5 DAILY GAZETTE WEDNESDAY, NOV.
