We just came out to play," said Washington State quarterback Samoa Samoa after 4 leading the West to a 24-17 victory in yesterday's 35th annual Hula Bowl. COMPLETE "I like to be the underdog, but I try my best no matter what the situation," Samoa said.

"In playing in this kind of all-star game, I have to prove myself. Samoa, who was named the game's outstanding offensive player, complet ed only three passes for 34 yards, but he ran for 45 yards and scored on two SELECTION OF RIVIERA ELECTRA LESABRE CENTURY one-yard runs. CJ'- fx CF' "Our kids saw that the other side was getting the publicity, so they came in excited, ready to play," said West coach Roger Theder of Califor nia. The West defense thwarted Trophy winner George Rogers of South Carolina, limiting him to 43 yards in 12 carries. The winners' de fense was equally tough in stopping the favored East's highly regarded passers.

Mark Herrmann of Purdue complet ed seven of 14 passes for 69 yards, and his East teammate, Joe "747" Ad ams of Tennessee State completed seven of 18 for 104 yards. Associated Prau STANFORD, Calif. While everybody was waiting for big things from the West's highly touted quarterbacks, Indiana's Tim Clifford of the East quietly stole their thunder in yesterday's 56th annual East-West Shrine Game. Clifford sparked one touchdown drive with a pair of dazzling runs and later passed for a touchdown to direct a 21-3 East victory at Stanford Stadium. A crowd of 76,000 watched the East defense shut down West quarterbacks Nell Lomax of Portland State and Tom Flick of Washington.

The only West score came on a 52-yard field goal by Brian Sullivan of Santa Clara. Clifford, who shared offensive most valuable player honors with "Famous" Amos Lawrence of North Carolina, said he hoped his performance would help him in the National Football League draft. "I was looking for this game to help me, and I don't think it hurt me any," said Clifford, who completed nine of 13 passes for 100 yards. "I think it just showed that I'm a leader type and that I can make things happen." East outside linebacker Ricky Jackson of Pittsburgh, who recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass, also said he thought the game enhanced his pro chances. "I wanted to show people what I could do," Jackson said.

"As for professional football, I'll play for anyone who needs help." Jackson's fumble recovery at the West 30-yard line set up the East's first touchdown. Lawrence, who gained more than 1,000 yards in each of the past four seasons, scored from one yard to put the East ahead. Lawrence raced 15 yards early in the second half to put the East ahead 14-0. Clifford had scrambled for runs of 18 and 11 yards on the drive. Sullivan's field goal, the longest in the all-star game's history, pulled the West to within 14-3 later in the third quarter.

Because it trailed by more than a touchdown, the West received the ensuing kickoff because of an East-West Shrine Game rule. The West drove to the East's one-yard line, but Jackson intercepted a Flick pass at the two-yard line to halt the march. The East, operating behind Clifford throughout the second half, iced the game with an 85-yard scoring drive to open the fourth quarter. Clifford capped the drive with a three-yard strike to Tim Sherwin of Boston Col All-America defensive back Kenny Easley of UCLA intercepted two passes and shared the outstanding defensive player award with West team REGAL SKYLARK IF YOU BUY ANY CAR WITH A RED TAG ON THE WINDSHIELD YOU AUTOMATICALY RECEIYE A COUPON BOOK FOR 100 GALLONS OF FREE MO GDMMDCKS! "Their ability to run, their scram bling quarterbacks and their good field position gave them the victory," said East coach Jim Young of Purdue. "In an all-star game like this, regard less of who is favored, it's a tossup. Hawaii's Jim Asmus kicked a 21- yard field goal to put the West ahead 3-0. The East took its only lead late in the first quarter on a 37-yard pass from Adams to Mardye McDole of Mississippi State. Easley set up the West's first touchdown by intercepting a pass from Herrmann and returning it to the East 23-yard line.
