THE COURIER-JOURNAL TIMES, LOUISVILLE, KY. SUNDAY MORNING, MAY 30, 1971 7 Green turns into hitter, sparks A's past Boston 12-8 BOSTON (AP) Fenway Park, with its short dimensions, has always been a friendly place for hitters and yesterday it helped light-hitting Dick Green look like a terror with the bat. Green, who started the afternoon with a .228 average, cracked a pair of home runs and a single as Oakland outslugged Boston 12-8 to even the season's first series between the American League's divisional leaders at one game apiece. The Athletics broke loose for 16 hits off six Red Sox pitchers in the wild, nationally-televised game. Boston didn't do badly itself, assaulting four Oakland pitchers for 11 hits.

Green singled in a three-run second inning against starter Jim Lonborg, hit his sixth homer of the season off Ken Brett in the fourth and slammed a two-run homer against Mike Nagy in the sixth. Joe Rudi doubled home two Oakland runs in the second and then connected for his sixth homer in the fifth. Angel Mangual touched off the four-run sixth with a pinch homer, his second of the year. The sixth inning rally erased a 7-5 Boston lead and put the Athletics on top for good at 9-7. Also in the sixth, Oakland's Reggie Jackson was ejected for arguing an umpire's call too strenously.

He doubled home a run, then was caught off second after taking a wide turn. After Jackson was thumbed out by umpire Dave Phillips he had to be restrained by other umpires and teammates from going after Phillips. Rico Petrocelli was Boston's batting star for the second straight day. He hit his fourth homer in the last three games and his ninth of the year in a four-run fifth. He drove in four runs, two on a first-inning double and two more with his homer in the fifth, which helped give the Red Sox their brief 7-5 lead.

Petrocelli now has seven RBIs in the two games with Oakland. The pattern for the game was set in the second when Lonborg, failing in his third start since being recalled from the Louisville Colonels, got pinch-hitter Ramon Webster to ground into an apparent inning-ending double play with Boston leading 3-1. However, interference was called on catcher Duane Josephson and Webster was awarded first, loading the bases. Oakland then added two more runs and chased Lonborg. The series winds up today with Oakland's Jim (Catfish) Hunter (8-2), who'll be seeking his ninth straight victory, pitching against Bill Lee (4-1).

Bahnsen was nicked for a ground-rule double by Jim Spencer and a run-scoring single by Alex Johnson in the fourth inning, then blanked the Angels on two hits the rest of the way to earn his second victory against six losses. The Yankees bounced back from the 1-0 deficit with a three-run flurry-keyed by White's eighth homer of the season-in the bottom of fourth.

It was the first inning in 150 in which the Yanks scored more than two runs. INDIANS 2, WHITE SOX 1 Rookie Chris Chambliss' first major league hit, a two-run single in the seventh, provided all the spark Cleveland needed to give pitcher Ray Lamb the victory. Harmon Killebrew capped the rally off reliever Dave Boswell, a former Twin making his debut for Baltimore, with a three-run homer. Merv Rettenmund, who scored four runs, walked in the seventh and Johnson followed two outs later with the tie-breaking homer. BREWERS 9, TIGERS 2 The Mil waukee Brewers bunched half of their Associated Press Bobby Bonds' three-run home run and a two-run blast by Willie McCovey highlighted a six-run sixth inning rally that powered the surging San Francisco Giants to an 8-3 victory over the visiting Montreal Expos yesterday. Veteran right-hander Juan Marichal hurled a five-hitter and raised his record to 8-2 as the Giants won their fifth game in six starts and lifted their record to 34-14.

Loser Carl Morton, 4-6, had a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the sixth. But Tito Fuentes led off with a double and Dick Dietz walked before Jimmy Rosario's single tied the score. With one out, Bonds ripped a 400-foot homer to right-center. It was his 12th of the year and gave him 27 RBIs as a lead-off hitter. Rookie Chris Speier followed with a single, chasing Morton.

Then, with two away, McCovey cracked the longest home run of the season at Candlestick Park, a 450-foot shot into the right field bleachers. It was his ninth of the season. Marichal, now 5-1 against the Expos and 211-100 in his career, allowed another unearned run in the seventh on Rusty Staub's single, another error by Speier, a walk and a passed ball. PIRATES 9, CUBS 4 Pittsburgh hit four home runs, including two-run blasts by Richie Hebner and Bob Robertson, to thump visiting Chicago 9-4. Hebner's homer came in the first after Vic Davalillo singled.

Gene Alley hit a solo shot in the second, and Robertson and Milt May hit consecutive homers in the fourth after Al Oliver was safe on an error by Ron Santo. All four homers came off Bill Hands, who went just four innings in losing his seventh game against four victories. 12 hits in a six-run third inning uprising and went on to pound Detroit behind the five-hit pitching of Lew Krausse. Mike Hegan smacked a two-run homer in the fourth, helping Krausse breeze to his second victory in eight decisions, Detroit's Gates Brown, who doubled in the fifth to set an American League rec ord of 77 career pinch hits, tripled home and struck out seven. Loser Gary Nolan, 3-5, was lifted for a pinch hitter in the eighth.

CARDINALS 8, BRAVES 7 Joe Torre boomed a bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the ninth inning at St. Louis to rally the Cardinals over Atlanta 8-7. The Braves had broken a 5-5 tie with two unearned runs in the top of the ninth but the streaking Cardinals, who won their fifth straight, bounced right back. Lou Brock, who earlier had extended his hitting streak to 25 games, opened the Cards' half of the ninth with a single and Matty Alou also singled. When reliever Cecil Upshaw bobbled Ted Simmons' attempted bunt, the bases were loaded.

Torre followed with his game-winning triple. METS 5, PADRES 1 Tom Seaver pitched New York past homestanding San Diego 5-1. The hard-throwing righthander gave up seven hits and two walks, racked up 10 strikeouts and helped his own cause with an RBI single in picking up his first triumph in three weeks. He stands 6-2 on the season. Singles by Jerry Grote, Bud Harrelson, Tim Foli and Seaver knocked in the Mets' first four runs, all at the expense of loser Steve Arlin.

Tommy Agee accounted for the other tally with a single off reliever Bob Miller. Nate Colbert provided all the San Diego offense with a homer in the last inning. DODGERS 9, PHILLIES 3 Bill Singer scattered five hits and singled home a pair of runs, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 9-3 triumph over visiting Philadelphia. Singer, 3-9, snapped a personal five-game losing streak. It was also the first time he's won at Dodger, Stadium since pitching a no-hitter against the Phillies last July 20, ending a string of seven straight losses at home.
