10 THE COLRIERJOIRNAL, SATURDAY, JILY IS, 1972 Droll Role entered Chess series in doubt: cameras to be removed Quack and Bicker try older Cup foes yKM MMwii.niirnmii 44 wi, Wr slj 'mi Iff son of Tom Rolfe has won three straight stakes this year. Eddie Maple makes his Hollywood Park riding debut on Droll Role. Howard Grant will ride Kennedy Road, the Canadian champion who must carry 118 pounds as second high weight. Bwamazon Farm's Quack, with Donald Pierce, gets in with 115 while Green Thumb Farm's Bicker, like Quack a 3-year-old, drew 109 with another Eastern a Associated Press Bobby Fischer says he's "upset and provoked." An appeals committee says his request to replay the chess game he forfeited to Boris Spassky Thursday has been denied. And chess fans in Moscow say the American challenger for the world chess crown may be touched! in the head.

Fischer, who forfeited the second game of the match because of three moving picture cameras in the hall where the match is being held, said yesterday tournament organizers seemed to provoke him deliberately. He said if the forfeit ruling were reversed and all cameras were removed, he would go ahead with the 24-game series. His demand came despite the fact the movie and television rights allowed the Icelandic Chess Federation to offer a record $125,000 purse for both players. Gumundur Thorarinson, president of the Icelandic Chess Federation, said after a four man appeals committee ruled 3-1 the cameras would be removed, but that Spassky's game point would stay. Thorarinson said that if the match was stopped by Fischer's disqualification, the organizers would not pay the loser's share of the money.

This meant that Fischer could not only lose his chances at the title but, almost $200,000 as well. Fischer presented a seven-page protest letter to Lothar Schmid, the chief referee for the match. He also had a copy of his protest sent to Spassky. After reading it, the usually quiet Russian champion said: "It's about everything except chess." Spassky said he was disgusted, disappointed and planned to go fishing for two days and not think about chess. Spassky leads 2-0 in the series and needs 10 more points to retain his title.

A victory counts one point and a draw 'a half point. Fischer's lawyer, Andrew Davis from New York, said he could not comment on whether or not Fischer would show up for the third game Sunday. In Moscow, meanwhile, hostility toward Fischer has grown among park bench chess players. Russian's chess players who used to call him "Bobby" are now referring to the American as "Fischer." The growing feeling among the six million Russians who take chess seriously is that Fischer is looking for an excuse to justify his defeat. One Russian chess enthusiast looked at it differently, however.

"He's slightly touched in the head," he said. Staff Photo by Ford Raid Which potable proved more potent?
