4 THE COURIER-JOURNAL, TUESDAY, JULY 1I 1972 Perry's 14th marred by charge; Giants win 5-4; Dodgers split I 1- tKX 7 fl 7p; 'iJ Dodgers and a split of their doubleheader under new manager Paul Owens. Pete Richert hurled two innings of scoreless relief as the Dodgers won the opener 6-4 in the 11th on Wes Parker's tie-breaking sacrifice fly and Bill Buck-ner's run-scoring single. Chris Speier delivered a two-run single in the eighth to rally the San Francisco IGiants to a 5-4 win over the New York Mets in Shea Stadium. It was the fifth loss in the last six games for the Mets, who led 4-3 entering the inning. Ken Singleton and Mike Jorgensen ripped consecutive eighth-inning homers, leading the Montreal Expos to a 6-3 victory over visiting San Diego in a game in which two Padre players wound up in the hospital.

Catcher Fred Kendall banged into a backstop trying to catch a foul pop fly in the first and suffered a bruised shoulder and a cut on his forehead that required several stitches. Two innings later, Lee was hit in the head by a pitch from Montreal's Balor Moore and was taken to a hospital for x-rays. a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning to hand the host Baltimore Orioles their fifth straight setback 3-2. Mike Cuellar was working on a four-hitter and leading 2-1 with two out in the ninth when Richie Scheinblum singled. Piniella followed with his eighth homer into the left field seats.

Bobby Darwin's first grand slam homer of his career and the combined seven-hit pitching of Jim Perry and Dave La Roche helped the host Minnesota Twins whip the Milwaukee Brewers 8-1. Detroit took over sole possession of first place In the American League's Eastern Division, blasting Texas rookie Don Stanhouse for seven runs in the first three innings, four on two-run homers by Jim Northrup and Norm Cash, enroute to an 8-3 triumph at Detroit. The Tigers now lead Baltimore by one full game. In the National League Willie Montanez drove In five runs to power the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-1 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Associated Prats Legal or not, Gaylord Perry of Cleveland owns his 14th victory of the season today. Perry tossed a four-hitter as the Indians rode Ron Lolich's first major league home run to a 2-1 decision over the visiting Chicago White Sox, much to the chagrin of Chicago manager Chuck Tanner.

Tanner played the American League game under protest because Perry was allowed to use what he insisted were "illegal pitches." Tanner registered his protest with plate umpire Bill Haller after Carlos May was called out on strikes to end the top of the third inning. Perry's win tied him with Detroit's Mickey Lolich Ron's cousin as the winningest pitcher in the majors. Ron's homer came in the fourth inning after the Indians had scored their first run in the first on singles by Buddy Bell and Alex Johnson and Graig Nettles' sacrifice fly. It nursed a comfortable lead for a time, until Oldham County closed in at 5-4 in the top of the fifth inning. Lebanon ex-, ploded for four more runs at that point was out of danger. After 76 games a year ago, Sparky Anderson's Reds were 16 games out of first place with a 33-44 record. They had drawn 624,061 fans through 24 home dates.

At the time, the contrast to the 1970 pennant year was a painful one: Those Reds had held a 54-22 record and a 10-game stranglehold on first place at the same juncture. This yea1, the team's dramatic return to form has paid dividends both on the field and at the box office. Sunday's doubleheader crowd of 52,611 at Riverfront Stadium was the largest baseball assemblage in Cincinnati history. After 76 games the Reds lead the Western Division by one game over Houston with a 45-31 record, and their 769,060 attendance through 34 home dates is better than last year's pace. The results drop Bardstown, Highview and Oldham County to the tournament's "loser's" bracket.

Another defeat will end their chances at the title. Steve Goldberg had a golden day at the plate with three hits, including a home run and a double, to pace St. Matthews' win. Greg Brown added three singles to the winning attack. In all, St.

Matthews garnered 14 hits against two Highview pitchers. The win went to Jeff Johnson. Thirteen strikeouts by Pleasure Valley's Meredith and a measly four-hit attack relegated Bardstown to its place among one-time losers in the tournament. A stonemason whose business usually runs to gravestones, Helgason has been in the chess board trade for the past few weeks. Yesterday he made his fourth chess board, the one that Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky will play on for about $300,000 in prizes. The first one Helgason made was too shiny for Fridrik Olofsson, an Icelandic grand master acting as technical adviser to the organizers. The second was considered too light, Helgason said. It lacked the proper contrast.

The squares on board No. 3 were 2 12 inches on each side, a quarter inch too big for the grandmasters. "I hope this one is all right." Helgason said with a worried look. "We haven't got much time." The light gray marble will serve for the white squares on the board while Helgason used green lancashire slate for the black. i Nothing was right for Fischer early yesterday morning.

Overhead lights which cost $5,500 to install had to be changed, he said. The mahogany table which cost another couple of thousand had to be shortened by Ragnar Haraldsson, the carpenter who made it. But despite these last-minute problems minor compared with the disputes which nearly wrecked the match last week everything was set for Spassky to make the first move today at 5 p.m. (1 p.m. EDT).

Then the Russians came to the sports hall where the 24-game world championship series begins today, and Yefim Geller said the squares were too big. Bobby Fischer showed up at 1 a.m. yesterday to see for himself. The American spent an hour pivoting around in a leather chair in front of the playing table.

It was the chair he sat in to beat Russian Tigran Petrosian and gain the right to play world champion Spassky, another Russian. Fischer hunched over the board, waved DP Texas 1. LOB Texas 13. Dutrmt onv.Hr,. City State.
