THE COl RIER JOl THURSDAY, JUNE 22, 1972 $Lwait invasion by Astros Reds down Expos, regain West lead Sp.clil to Tht Courltr-Jouriul CINCINNATI Tony Perez' two-run (Ingle in the fifth inning reawakened the Cincinnati Reds, moved them back into first place in the National League West Division and prepared them for tonight's invasion by the second-place Houston Astros and the beginning of their four-ipime series. Perez' hit wiped out a 3-2 deficit and launched Cincinnati to a 6-4 victory ofver the Montreal Expos last night at Biverfront Stadium. It was only the second win for the Reds in their last six games and hiked their home record to 13-14. Tonight in an 8:05 game, the Reds, holding a half-game advantage over Houston, will have Wayne Simpson (4-1) dn the mound against Astros left-hander Dave Roberts (6-3). Houston, which dropped a 5-4 decision to the New York Mets last night, will be seeking revenge for a fcur-game sweep by the Reds in the Astrodome tm 'Cincy's last road trip.

With the Expos' Steve Renko clinging to a 3-2 lead, Pete Rose got things started for the Reds in the fifth with a single. Joe Morgan also singled and Johnny Bench received an one-out walk, filling the bases. Perez then rapped a single to center to put the Reds in front to stay. George Foster's sacrifice fly plated another run in the inning. The Expos had jumped off to a 3-0 lead against Reds ace Gary Nolan by the second inning.

Ron Fairly's sacrifice fly in the first produced one ran and Bob Bailey's sacrifice fly and Tim Foil's squeeze bunt added two more in the second. Cincinnati cut into the margin in the second when Renko issued two-out walks to Dave Concepcion and Nolan and a two-run triple to Rose. Nolan, hiking his record to 9-2, helped his own cause with a double in the sixth and scored on Morgan's single. The right-hander, though, needed relief help from Tom 0n? Qge? GfiininD Hall and Clay Carroll. The Reds stole three bases by Bobby Tolan, Bench and Morgan to bring their season theft total to 59, or equal their 1971 output.

Bryant, meanwhile, worked out of a fourth-inning jam when he walked the bases loaded by striking out Pappas. PHILLIES 9, BRAVES 7 Mike Ryan crashed a bases-loaded two-out double in the ninth inning, breaking a tie and lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-7 victory over the Braves at Atlanta. The Phillies, who ended a six-game losing streak, had loaded the bases on walks to Tom Hutton, Willie Montanez and Terry Harmon. Larry Bowa lined out for the second out of the inning but then Ryan delivered his big hit.

Hank Aaron, the Braves' rightfielder, drilled a pair of singles, pushing the slugger to the No. 5 spot on the all-time list with 3,313 hits. Aaron replaced Eddie Collins, who had 3,311. Aaron drove in two runs with a third-inning sacrifice fly and fifth inning hit. DODGERS 5, PIRATES 3 Jim Lefebvre poked a two-out, two-run pinch single in the 10th inning, giving Los Angeles a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates and ending the Dodgers' longest losing streak of the season at four games.

The setback trimmed Pittsburgh lead over New York in the East to five percentage points. Frank Robinson and Wes Parker started the winning rally with one-out singles off Pittsburgh starter Bob Moose. Dave Giusli relieved Moose and Duke Sims grounded out as the runners advanced. Lefebvre then batted for Steve Garvey and singled to left, scoring Robinson and Parker. Marshall tried to score from third on a double steal. Associated Press The New York Mets broke a tie with two runs in the eighth inning on Tommy Helms' error and John Milner's single to snap the Houston Astros' six-game National League winning streak 5-4 last night at Houston. New York's Jerry Koosman and Houston's Tom Griffin traded four-hitters through seven innings and were locked in a 3-3 tie. With one out in the eight, Tommie Agee, hitlcss in 20 at-bats, ripped a double off the glove of third baseman Doug Rader and went to third on Ken Boswell's single. Dave Marshall grounded a perfect double play ball to second baseman Helms, who booted it as Agee scored.

Milner then singeld home what proved to be the winning run. CARDINALS 14, PADRES 3 Bob Gibson pitched a three-hitter through seven innings and slammed a three-run homer in leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 14-3 victory over the visiting San Diego Padres. The 211th career win by Gibson, who departed in the eighth inning with a sore leg while leading 14-1, eclipsed the old St. Louis club record of 210 which he shared with Jesse Haines after beating the Padres 3-2 on June 9 in San Diego.

En route to the triumph, Gibson struck out seven and walked none in recording his fifth straight win following five straight season-opening losses. The Cards shot in front 10-0 in the first three innings on a three-run homer by Joe Torre and two triples by Lou Brock. Gibson's home run came with teammates Bernie Carbo and Luis Melendez aboard in a four-run seventh, It was the 19th career homer for Gibson, who also singled. GIANTS 4, CUBS 0 Left-hander Ron Bryant fired a two-hitter, enabling the San Francisco Giants to down Chicago 4-0 and end the host Cubs' seven-game victory streak. Bryant yielded a leadoff single to Don Kessinger and then handcuffed the Cubs, except for five walks and Billy Williams' two-out single.

He got all the scoring support he needed in the second inning when the Giants touched Milt, Pappas for a run on successive singles by Dave Rader, Alan Gallagher and Tito Fuentes.
