THE 01 KILR I U.nInY. AH, 1ST 30. 1972 Killehrew hits big homer Tiant continues comeback, blanks Chisox Cubs a 2-1 triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers yesterday. The Cubs were checked on two singles for five innings by Dodger right-hander Bill Singer before Don Kessinger reached first on shortstop Bill Russell's error. Jose Cardenal then singled and Williams hit a wrong field double to left.

Singer, who yielded only four hits, suffered his 13th loss against five victories. Pappas is now 10-7. Willie Davis collected three hits, including his 15th homer, in the third inning. Associated Press Luis Tiant continues his comeback, with much of it at the expense of the Chicago White Sox. Tiant, whose fortune sunk to the point he was optioned briefly to the Louisville Colonels last year, pitched his second straight shutout of the White Sox and third straight overall last night as the Boston Red Sox won 3-0.

Tiant limited Chicago to just five hits. The Red Sox jumped on Tom Bradley for two runs in the first inning Carl Yastrzemski drew a two-out walk and scored on Reggie Smith's double. After Rico Petrocelli walked, Carlton Fisk singled Smith across. Tiant got a leadoff single in the fifth and, after Yastrzemski drew a two-out walk, Smith lashed his second double for Boston's final run. The White Sox, who started play one- half game ahead of Oakland in baseball's American League West, got only two runners as far as second against Tiant, who won only 17 games the last three years after a 21-game season for Cleveland in 1968.

Tiant, who was 1-7, in 1971, is now 9-4. Dick Allen doubled with one out in the fourth but was trapped and run down on Carlos May's smash back to the mound. In the sixth, Pat Kelly drew a leadoff walk and Allen singled with one out. But May struck out and Kelly was caught attempting to steal third. Elsewhere in the A.L., Johnny Calli-son's single off Horacio Pina following leadoff walks to Ron Blomberg and Ber-nie Allen in the 11th inning gave the New York Yankees a 7-6 victory over Texas in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader.

Bobby Murcer, who had a single, double and triple earlier, led off the ninth inning with a game-tying home run off Steve Lawson, his 23rd of the baseball season. Ted Ford's three-run homer and a pair of RBI singles by Jim Mason staked the Rangers to a 6-2 lead before the Yankees started their comeback with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, triggered by Hal Lanier's pinch double. Minnesota's Harmon Killebrew, making his first start in a baseball game since Aug. 19, hit his 536th career home run to tie Mickey Mantle for fourth place on the all-time list. The Twins slugger connected for his 21st homer of the year against Baaltimore starter Mike Cuellar in the first inning of their game.

The blast tied Killebrew with Mantle behind Babe Ruth, Henry Aaron and Willie Mays. Killebrew's drive with a man on base carried 396 feet into the left field seats. Killebrew got his 500th and 501st homers off Cuellar in 1971. National League Billy Williams drove in two runs with a sixth inning double and Milt Pappas scattered eight hits to give the Chicago Associated Press THAT'S sneaky ol' Bill Russell of the Los Angeles Dodgers slipping in behind Jose Cardenal (1) to put the tag on the Cubs outfielder at second base in yesterday's game at Chicago. Cardenal was trying to stretch a single into a double.

East Hardin rolls 18-6 East Hardin High's first-year football team defeated Warren Central High's junior varsity 18-6 Monday night. East Hardin received touchdown runs of 62 and four yards and from Bill and George Watts, and Rick Tannerhill galloped 40 yards with an intercepted pass for the third TD. That's when the city's new pick-up program for newspapers will begin. Until that time, if you live inside the corporate limits of Louisville, don't put your papers out. They won't be picked up until Sept. 18. The temporary halt in the pick-up program is to give the city time to reorganize their program.

They hope when the program is begun again everyone who puts their papers out will have them picked up promptly. So hold on to all your old newspapers. And watch for an announcement of the city's new pick-up program to begin Sept. 18. 8 clmg.
