last evening, Saturday's Record. Although the train was ovor two hours late- in arriving here, which got them at the Summit town after midnight, nevertheless they kept their engagements. "Alter the ball was over" they could not gain- admittance to a hotel and walked about tho streets to keep warm until a kind policeman pointed out the roundhouse of tbe P. S. where they spent the re-, malnder of tbe morning.

It is hardly necessary to state that Ridgway looked very good to them when they arrived here this morning. Tltusvllle Herald April 14 was the. thirteenth anniversary ot the burning of the Parshall opera house, the partial destruction by lire of the Roberts block, now known as the Brunswick, and the death of two persons who lost their lives in the flames. The lire originated in the opera house and might have been extinguished had not the fire department refused to work because of the appointment, of a chief engineer whom they did not want. Hon.

Jaa. It. Caldwcll was mayor of the city and when appeared on the scene after tbe Humes had made great headway, he deposed the officer objected to and put lato Augustus Castle in his place. Then the liromen went to work and managed to save Brunswick block after its roof, the-i a mansard, was burned off. The insubordination of the firemen resulted in the disbandment of one of the best.

Volunteer fire departments that ever fought a fire, and the organization of the present paid department. Queer noises are heard near the old South Mountain distillery, in an adjoining county. This old distillery, long since in ruins, had the reputation of making the best whiskey that ever trickled down the throat of a mountaineer or tickled the palate of a cattle owner. It is reported and believed by many, that near the distillery there are caves in which were concealed barrels of the old stuff, but it is of record that whenever anybody tries to sound the depths of tnese caves they are frightened away by the most weird and unearthly noises, some of which sound like the war whoops of Indians and others like the cries of a female in distress and this bad made the residents very cautious in prying about. So scared are some of them that they will not pass the old distillery at night and to avoid it they make a wide detour.

Those who believe in the hidden whiskey theory say that tbe liquor will be found some day and they are keeping their eyes open for signs. Those who scout the idea say that the cries heard are made by wild cats, of which there is a big colony in the vicinity as the depleted chicken coops of the residents -testify. Whatever it is, the queer sounds are there, and it will take something more than ridicule to make the superstitious believe that they are made by Harrisburg Telegraph. State Railroad Commission has received a letter from Darius Miller, president of a large western railroad system, urging that tlie commission consider the advisability of enacting strict legislation in regard to tramps and other trespassers on railroads and suggesting that other steps than driving them from town to town be adopted. He asked that a law to require compulsory labor from tramps be passed, saying that they have become a nuisance, and that 51 per cent of fatalities of all kinds on railroads in the year ending June 30, 1911, were Harrisburg Telegraph.

for the Star today: "In Little Italy." A convincing dramatic story of the ghetto. "The Tumbler's Kids." A traveling showman sends his children forth into a city to give their exhibition and collect what money they may. They discover a woman, sick and almost ready to die, and turn the money over to her, in return for which she gives them the best in her knowledge of the beauty of Christian life, and teaches them that sacrifice is rewarded with an inner consciousness of a good deed well done. On the same reel, "Asbestos Quarry." A very interesting, lucid and instructive film, on the method by which asbestos is blasted out of the rocks in a quarry. "Justice of the Desert" There is one thing certain: This picture is genuinely western in every particular and thoroughly in accordance with what are known to be actual facts in the history of tfie West, and it surely up every particle of real spirit that real people possess.

R. R. TRESPASSERS A BIG EXPENSE County Auditor Says State Law Should Make Companies Stand Most of Epense. Eric, April that have just been figured by the auditors show that the county paid 11,688 for fees and board in cases of train trespassers during the past year. The records show that 280 men and boys were arrested by the railroad detectives.

"In my estimation this money has been spent needlessly" said County Auditor Wlttman. "The taxpayers should enter a protest and have the state law so amended that the rail-, road companies would have to pay considerable of the expense. I believe that an investigation of the laws in New York and Ohio will show that the trespass cases are treated differently." The expense accounts of the trespassers give 1221 for the commitments from the alderman's office. It is said that some of the magistrates refuse to discharge the offenders but prefer to send them to Jail. The item of board for the prisoners in the county jail is given at Five railroad detectives assist the police in picking up strangers who are found iu the railroad yards and upon the trains.

Chief of Police Det- zcl has given instructions that they must limit their captures because he cannot have the police station filled with strangers every Saturday night when the police raids bring in many- other offenders. We collected the bill in SUNDAY MORNING FIRE. Home of Gust Anderson on Lincoln Street Destroyed. Emit Fahlman's Residence Damaged. On Sunday morning about four o'- Mr. Gust Anderson, residing Lincoln street, was awakened by smoke which filled his room to such an extent that be could scarcely see, and of course realizing that bis house was afire found his way down stairs where everything was ablaze in one room and the fire scattering to other parts of the house very rapidly.

He only had time to slip Into his clothes and get out consequently the house and all its contents were entirely destroyed. The fire department, through no fault of theirs, was unavoidably delayed in getting to the scene of the conflagration owing to the fact that tbe one sending in the alarm did not understand its working, and instead of pulling the lever down and leaving it spring back, kept a hold of same, consequently the alarm rung in anything but a box number, confusing the firemen so that they did not know which way to turn although they were all out and ready "to go," and the only way they discovered the location of the fire was by the reflection from same after it had gained a great headway. Upon the arrival of the department they proceeded to save the adjoining property of Emile Fahlman which they did, however the one side of the house was badly damaged. When the fire broke out Mr. Anderson was asleep and alone, his wife being in Ridgway visiting friends.

They lost all their furniture and persona! belongings, and while he carried some insurance the amount will not cover one-half the loss.
