That, assuming dates aren't changed, Ellis will knock down some soybeans in favor of a turf course, rather than lose those horses to Chicago or River Downs. That race tracks will take a page from Taco Bell, lowering prices to make more money in a competitive industry. After paying for parking, admission, program and Racing Form, one has made a sizable investment even before betting or paying $1.35 for a small soda.

The present Downs management came into power at about the same time the KTA came into existence, and racing has prospered ever since with record purses. It's hard to fathom why they've been negotiating for a year and still haven't reached an accord. That various commission menv bers and other Kentucky race tracks will quit suggesting that Churchill be forced to make the Derby available for intertrack wagering. Whether or not one thinks such betting would hurt on-track attendance, Churchill management has the right to make that call. That a stakes race be offered every day during Derby Week, as was done until recent years.

Business is good enough that Churchill can well afford it without compromising the Oaks and Derby cards. That Dick Cummings, the progressive race-track head who left Turfway for Puerto Rico last spring, return to Kentucky. That the Breeders' Cup change its rules so that once a horse is supplemented into one of its races, it doesn't have to be supplemented in subsequent years, as two-time Distaff winner Bayakoa had to be. That the New York media, so quick to blast the legal use of medication elsewhere, will investigate what horses are racing on in that state. That the Daily Racing Form or its soon-to-be launched competitor, Racing Times will run the past performances for all graded stakes across the country.

Better yet, how about Kentucky's editions carrying Southern California past performances and charts on a daily basis, as they do those from New York?
