CAN 12 THE COURIER TIMES, LOUISVILLE, KY. SUNDAY MORNING, JULY 18, 1971 At Wit's End Now the cookbooks sizzle with romance By ERMA BOMBECK It is incredible to me that cookbooks are outselling books on sex 1. I like fiction as well as the next one, but not for a moment do I buy that old line that the way to a man's heart is through the kitchen. I questioned this at our local bookstore. "Are you trying to tell me Ursula Andress is being replaced by a Col.

Sanders chicken leg?" I asked. "I am not trying to tell you anything of the kind," said the book buyer. "I am only trying to warn you cookbooks are becoming quite sexy. Within the next few months you can look for 'The Sensuous 'Everything You've Wanted to Know About Artichokes But Were Too Embarrassed to Ask' and 'Frigid Desserts Frankly We may sell this one under the counter." "Oh, come on," I said. "I cannot believe these would be best sellers." "Then you haven't read the current tearjerker which claims, 'Love Is Never Having to Say It Needs a Little Salt'?" "That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of," I said.

"When Playboy features a tuna casserole in the center-fold, then I'll believe food is replacing sex." I chuckled to myself all the way home. When I arrived my husband was peering into the oven. "What's for dinner?" he asked. "Hello, dear," I said, kissing him on the ear. "You're not pulling that old onion-inthe -oven trick on me again, are you?" he asked irritably, "just to make me think something wonderful is coming?" "I thought tonight we'd have a tray in the living room just the two of us." "A tray of what?" "I don't know." I said impatiently, "Maybe a few cold cuts and I'll play my Jackie Gleason album and "Where's that cold pork chop I hid behind the jar of mayonnaise? IT'S GONE!" he shouted hysterically.

Spaniard faces jail for sex research MADRID "In many countries an investigation of this type would bring offers of fellowships. I suppose it is a matter of some sociological interest that here it has led to criminal charges." The speaker, Dr. Nicholas Caparros, is a thin, 30-year-old psychiatrist with a thick, black beard and an extensive practice among young people. He faces a jail sentence of up to six months for circulating questionnaires at the University of Madrid last year as part of a study of sex attitudes and practices. Aware of the rigid public attitudes on the subject of sex, Caparros conducted his survey with considerable discretion.

personal interviews were sought the 6,000 questionnaires were anonymous. They were handed to students or slipped through their mailboxes with a note asking that they be mailed back only if the recipient felt able to answer them fully. Nevertheless, a local newspaper published an angry editorial on what it called "a shameless survey." A police inquiry followed and last month, on the complaint of the supreme court prosecua "public scandal." tor, Caparros was, charged with creating If the response of the authorities dismayed the doctor, that of the students delighted him. Nearly one-quarter of the questionnaires were returned fully--and apparently frankly--filled out. Considering the number of questions-370-and the details they ask about subjects that are not publicly discussed, such as masturbation and sexual initiation, the rate of return was very high.

While awaiting his trial, which may not come until next year, Caparros has been quietly collating the results of the survey. Sexual instruction appears to be all but nonexistent in homes of the Spanish middle and upper-middle class--to which most of the students belong. Only 7 per cent said they learned from their families, schools or priests how babies are conceived. The other 93 per cent had to rely on friends, books or other means. One figure that surprised Caparros was the number of students who said they had By RICHARD EDER New York Times News Service experienced coitus at least once.

For men students it was 38 per cent, for women, 34 per cent. Other parts of the study, however, find a decided gap between sexual liberation in theory and in practice. Twenty-five per cent of the students favored abortion and yet more than 16 per cent-apparently with considerable overlap--had never used any form of sexual caress. ENGAGEMENTS Smith Mr. and Mrs.
