Robinson and Belanger Drive California Angels Batty; End Ryan s Bid ^— ^ ^— J . .- ,. L_ Mn nnnthor in thp .frmrth By The Associated Press Brooks Robinson and Mark Belanger, a pair of ''good-field, no-hit" ballplayers, drove the California Angels tatty. First the anemic Robinson broke up Nolan Ryan's bid for a no-hitter and then the light- hitting Belanger broke up the ballgame — and the result was a 3-2, 10-inning victory for the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday night. "I don't have many game- winning hits." said Belanger, whose bases-loaded single in the 10th knocked in the winning run. "In ten years, I've had two, maybe one." The game-winning hit came off an "up and in hummer" from reliever Dick Drago. "He struck me out on a ball up there last time and I was looking for something inside." said Belanger. a .257 hitter Low cost "package" policies for motorcycles and mini-bikes. this season. "I got it and the ball landed where nobody was." Robinson, also known more for his glove than his bat, got the first hit of the game off the hard-throwing Ryan — a one- out, run-scoring triple in the seventh inning. Robinson was batting . 116 at game time. 14 Times Herald, Carroll, la. Wednesday, April 28, 1976 Ryan, who has thrown four no-hitters in his career, had strucki.out ll batters and walked eight before giving up Robinson's bloop triple into the left field corner that cut the California lead to 2-1, "I never gave a no-hitter a thought, the way I was throwing, " said Ryan. Death was spotted two chances in the past five months. Judy Pauley came out the winner, but the struggle isn't over. For Miss Pauley, 19. each movement is a victory. "Judy can smile, even though she can't rub her nose with her finger," said her mother. Mrs. Thelma Pauley of Defiance. Miss Pauley was a gymnast at Grand View College in Des Moines until Sept. 19 when she fell from the uneven parallel bars and was paralyzed. Surgery was performed to fuse the sixth vertebra in her back. Two days later she suffered a cardiac arrest, caused by swelling in her throat and loss of breath. After being hospitalized near Denver, Colo., from Dec. 17 to April 11, she returned home to Defiance, only to battle a fever that reached 106 degrees. "When it got to 103. we thought that was low," said Mrs. Pauley, who has four other children. "All of us in this house believe in the five Ps — prayer, perseverance, patience and Pauley power." While Miss Pauley practices the five Ps, friends have planned a way to help pay Business & Office EQUIPMENT AMCO Insurance Company f 40 The Greteman Agency 523 N. "I didn't have the heart to tell Judy that people in Des Moines were going to hold a dance in her benefit." Mrs. Pauley said. "Lori Pike, another Grand View gymnast, was visiting here this past weekend and broke the news to Judy. "Judy immediately said. Td like to go. I'll see you Friday night'." A dance marathon for Miss Pauley will be held from 7 p.m. Friday until 1 p.m. Saturday in the Grand View gymnasium. Persons can dance all they want for a minimum pledge of 10 cents for the 18 hours. "The thought behind this kindness is what counts," Mrs. Pauley said. "None of us is looking at the dollar sign. We're grateful for all the people who care about our daughter." Mrs. Pauley doesn't know what the costs have been for Judy's care, although she said hospital bills were $7,000 a month. "We had good insurance which covered Judy as a student," she said, "but now we've had to obtain a lawyer because the insurance company claims Judy no longer is a student and she should be considered an adult and must have her own policy." A nurse gives Miss Pauley breathing therapy once a week. Mrs. Pauley said the family has "tried to help out with the physical therapy. All 'of us take a turn "working with Judy's muscles. You also have to deal with her mind. "I can't understand it...Judy was always so careful in gymnastics, and yet she got hurt. She's had a hard time reasoning, too. "Judy told me at least once that 'I might as well have lived a reckless life, because I couldn't have been hurt any worse'." Judy also has suffered a loss • of memory because of the car- 'diac drrest. •*"'••• ' • "This whole thing has been very, very rough on her." said Mrs. Pauley. "Grand View classmates came to see Judy over Easter vacation and' this did much to build Judy's ego. She's getting in the groove and never says quit when we begin therapy." Mrs. Pauley said doctors "don't predict anything about her physical recovery. They just don't know."
