Alan Grimm Aucts. by Jon Peterson Seamed-To-Slim Doll Plus Clothes Printed Pattern C Junior Editors' Quiz on THE HYRAX QUESTION: What is a hyrax? ' , ' * * * ANSWER: Sometimes called the rock rabbit, the hyrax is a small rodent-like hoofed mammal. In Biblical times it was called the cony. Measuring about 20 inches long with a $tub of a tail, the hyrax has a. plump, pointed head, small rounded ears, short neck, short slender legs and a squat body. Its fur is a greyish brown. The hyrax's foot has four toes joined by skin and ending in claws to form a small hoof. The hoof is moist and forms a suction cup. Because of its hoofed feet and teeth, which are like those of'the rhinoceros, the hyrax is related to the elephant, rhinoceros and other hoofed mammals. It especially shows resemblance to primitive or extinct members of this group. • . The hyrax is found living in Africa to the south and east of the Sahara, and in extreme southwest Asia. There are : two 'different kinds: one is a ground living animal. In colpnies^pf about 50 individuals, it lives in deserts, hills or mountains and makes its nest in holes and cracks in the rocks. The other group of hyraxes lives in the trees. It is a solitary animal and is the only true tree-living hoofed mammal. It nests in the holes in trees. ; : ••-;'•'•• • ' ' • • 4-28 (Alicia Bandy of Taylqrville., Illinois, wins a prize for this question.
