After the star of "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" had surgery last year to treat painful nodules in her throat, reports circulated that she would never sing again. But Thursday, she insisted any damage to her singing voice was not irreparable, and she was merely taking a year off. "It's like an athlete that takes a season out, and that's what I'll be doing," she said. "Much has been made of it that \#as- n't exactly true.... It's not as disastrous as people were led to believe." The 62-year-old actress' speaking voice will be a part of the musical stage version of "Dr. Doolittle," which opens in London next month. Wonder livin' for the kids DETROIT — Livin' for the city isn't enough — certainly not for parents of school-age children, according to Stevie Wonder. "It's so important that we — adults, parents — get involved in the greatest legacy we have, the only legacy we have," Wonder told about 1,000 people gathered outside the Breithaupt Vocational Technical Center on Wednesday. "That is, our future, our children." The Michigan native, who was a preteen when he had his first hit with Motown Records, was named "parent ambassador" for the school on Detroit's west side. Wonder, a father of three living in" Los Angeles, pledged to maintain close contact with Breithaupt and return a year from now for graduation ceremonies. Asthma silences Joel LONDON — Singer Billy Joel, suffering from asthma, canceled a joint concert with Elton John on Thursday and apologized to the nearly 30,000 fans who had tickets to the show in Manchester. "I feel terrible about this, not only for my own fans, but for Elton and his fans as well," Joel said. At the pair's opening concert in Glasgow, Scotland, on Tuesday, Joel suffered an acute asthma attack brought on by an upper respiratory infection. Reviewers had noted bitter winds at the open air concert. John would not appear alone in Manchester, forcing the show's cancellation. From Wire Service Reports WONDER T ADVICE Second wife must tell husband who comes first Dear Ann Landers: I love my husband very much. He has three children from a previous marriage. His two daughters are married now, and the one son is still single, living on his own. They grew up with their mom and step- dad. When they became teen-agers, their mother didn't want them hanging around, so we took the kids in. They almost destroyed our marriage and my emotional health. Then, the kids went off to college. None of them finished. We have paid for two weddings and two baby showers. I don't even "* want to think about how many cars we paid for that they have wrecked. The oldest daughter came over one day and cried about how she and her husband wanted a house and couldn't afford it. So, ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. my good-hearted husband went out and got a loan for their down payment. The second daughter is now counting the days. Her father promised that he would do the same for her. We are not rich people, Ann. We go from paycheck to paycheck. I never have complained about my husband's loyalty to his first family. Unfortunately, we never had any children of our own. He said we couldn't afford it. Now, I am the step- grandmother of three. I always felt there was something missing in my life. I now realize it is the warm and loving relationship between children and parents I had with my own father and mother. I do not have those mother- daughter shopping days, the long talks and the special moments. I am not included in my stepchildren's lives. We see the kids only when they want something. They have never invited us over. I have two questions: When does the second wife become first in her marriage? TV TONIGHT The stepchildren are now starting their families — where is mine? — Tired of Being Second in Cleveland Dear Cleveland: The second wife becomes first when she asserts herself and lets her husband know that she will not tolerate being pushed aside while his first wife and children treat her shabbily. If you need a starting point, show your husband this letter and tell him it was written by you. Dear Ann Landers: I work as a bank teller. A month ago, I fell on the steps of my home and fractured my right arm. After a week of sick leave, I returned to work with my arm in a cast, happy to be up and doing something constructive. What I didn't realize was that practically every person who came to my teller window seemed to find it necessary to inquire about my injury. "Oh, my heavens — what happened to your arm?" When I say, "I fell and broke it," most people won't stop there. They want to know all the details or feel the need to regale me with stories of their own injuries, which, of course, are endless and boring. I serve approximately 150 people a day, and fully 100 are "askers." What these "interested" folks don't realize is that every comment or question reminds me vividly of the pain and trauma of the accident. By the end of my shift, I am ready to cry. I hope this letter will help your readers understand that when they encounter someone, particularly a stranger, who has obviously had a traumatic experience, it is kinder to let courtesy override curiosity. — Fed Up in Oregon Dear Oregon: Please don't be so hard on the questioners. It is only human Jia- ture, when one sees a crutch, a black 6ye or a bandaged arm, to ask, "What happened?" A simple response (no organ recital) is all that is expected. Simply say, "I fell," and change the subject. ; 6/5/98 7:00 7:30 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30 10:00 10:30 7:00 7:30 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30 10:00 10:30 I PBS, Bunker Hill-Hays WashWk3698 Wail St. 9056 Market 9018 Business 1853 Ending Welfare as We Know It (CC) 91476 Mommy 53389 Artist Cut Say What?
