The Thunder played three years in Louisville, winning the American Indoor Soccer Association championship in the 1986-87 season. Last summer, amid mounting debts, the club decided not to field a team for the 1987-88 season after a drive to raise $300,000 fell $200,000 short. Heideman said the AISA, which operated this season with only four teams, has set a May 31 deadline for cities to submit a letter of credit to play next season, which starts in November. Most of the Thunder's former players are now with other teams, but many have agreed to return to Louisville if the club plays, Heideman said. Louisville Thunder Inc.

The club drew about 50,000 people during its last season, at Broadbent Arena. Heideman said County Judge-Executive Harvey Sloane recently suggested the county spearhead the drive to return soccer to Louisville. Heideman said he is discussing possible county assistance with Sloane's staff. Ernie Allen, Sloane's chief aide, said Thursday "we are trying to ascertain what could be done" to help the Thunder. "The loss of a very successful sports operation hurt," Allen said.

"The concept is for us to assist in putting together a fund drive." Allen said the Thunder, which employed more than 100 people, had applied for a city-county Economic Development Office loan of an unspecified amount But Allen said, "There is a real question of whether the team is eligible" for the loan. "We hope to come up with something that doesn't entail using public dollars." Heideman said a combination of public and private support is needed. He said the team's resurrection "is totally dependent on the degree of community support." Heideman said he has put on hold the possibility of trying to move the franchise to Washington, D.C.
