Printed Pattern r Junior Editors' Quiz on- CORK REMOVAL OF CORK •BAKK,EV£RY3 TO /O YEARS, DO£S . NOT HARM TREE. QUESTION: Where does cork come from? * * * ANSWER: Cork comes from the thick, spongy and deeply grooved bark of the large cork oak tree. The cork oak grows best in deep fertile soil in climates without a heavy frost. Spain has 2,000,000 acres of cork forest. The tree is also grown in Portugal, southern France and Italy and north Africa. The thick, water-tight and.flexible bark protects the tree from the hot dry climate. The commercial life of a cork tree can be 150 years or more. The tree must be fully mature before the first bark is stripped. Cork can be taken from the tree every 3 to 10 years depending on how fast the inner bark forms new cork cells. Usually a sheath of 1 to 2 inches is taken from the tree with each harvest. The harvesting of the cork is done by hand in the summer. The actual method is the same that the Romans used in the 1st century. Rings are cut into the bark. Then a verticle slash is made the length of the trunk with an ax Or saw. Starting at the cut, the outer bark is carefully •peeled and pried away from the inner bark. The removed peel is then steamed or boiled and pressed flat. - . ->•-•• 4-27 (Wendy Park of Bell Conte, Pennsylvania, wins a prize for this question.
