Iowa's Housing Market is on an Up-Swing By Paul Holley (Iowa Daily Press Association) DF.S MOINES - The Iowa housing market is on an up-swing. Financial leaders in Des Moines say that new housing starts are well ahead of last year due to a good money market. "There has been more money available for housing since the first of the year," said Richard Bryan, president of Des Moines Savings. "I think home building and apartment construction is going to get better in 1976 due to a greater availability of money." Bryan said that although interest rates on new home mortgages now run between eight-and-a-half and nine per cent, the demand for housing loans is up. Dennis Montgomery, executive director of the Iowa Savings and Loan League, said the State of Iowa should have a good year in both new construction and resales. "The money market is real good." said Kenneth Grandquist. president of Iowa Realty, Des Moines. "Everybody has money available for lending. Tlmet Harold, Carroll, la. Tuesday, April 27, 1976 8 "We're enjoying the best year we've ever had — business is very good in housing."he said. Grandquist said he does not expect any softening in the interest rate'i for homes. "The i'.terest rates are s t.a y i n g between eight-and-a-half and nine per cent;" he said. "But people who qualify are not having much of a problem getting loans. ' "Our biggest problem is .keeping enough inventory to meet the housing demand." Vince Caudle, executive director, Iowa Association of Realtors, agreed that the real estate market was booming statewide. "Realtors are selling everything they can get their hands on." he said. "There's plenty of mortgage money available." Caudle said he expects the market will remain good as long as money for housing is available. Home building appears to be riding the crest of the housing wave despite rising costs. U.S.. Homes in Des Moines. "Most of our buyers are purchasing larger homes because they know that materials prices will go up and they don't want to wait until later. "The savings and loans have plenty of money for qualified home buyers," he said. "The current rate (for loans) is not excessive — at least our buyers don't think so." Chappell estimated that his firm's sales were 25 per cent ahead of the same period last year. MAKIN'WHOOPEE! The Iowa Book Shelf East Edge of CARROLL, Hwy. 30 Edited By Mary Ann Riley A* MARRIED FEMINIST. By Angela Barren McBride. (Harper & Row $8.95) Although Mrs. McBride is a youngish woman, in this book she speaks for a multitude of middle-aged women who are happily married and yet have leanings toward or yearn for the stimulation and challenges of Feminism. A. psychiatric nurse•>by profession, the author also wrote The Growth and Development of Mothers and is a devoted wife and mother. In recreating-her over-plump, naive girlhood, she describes the constant, awareness familiar to all girls that boys are preferred offspring. In an increasingly competitive society, how, with the subtle influences of parents, educators and past and contemporary culture, can a girl seek equal chance and respect and still retain her traditional femininity? Alternating diary passages and insight gained from experience. Mrs. McBride explores her and our condition and offers honest counsel. For in,sitanoeu in ithe mattej! pf w,p,nkjng...mpth.e,rs, she things, 'we ought to explore much more fully the benefits .to the children . . . assertiveness, independence and responsibility.' She quotes from numerous thinkers and writers including Jung, whom she lauds for his concept of, personal completeness as a 'reconciliation of the feminine and masculine'modalities within oneself.' The food for thought in this book should make it one with wide appeal. — Mary Ann Riley , THE CHAMELEON COURSE. By Donald Seaman. (Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, $8.95) ,/ In this novel, one of the ^.'Soviet's most honored nuclear ' scientists escapes to save his writer wife from reprisals by the KGB. He soon learns that his hostsv the British Secret Service, are unwilling to accept his neutrality but insist that he disclose his scientific secrets. -In connection with his ,itrial for the shooting of a 'Vburglar he believed to be a Soviet Secret Agent, his lawyers are required by a hanging judge to reveal his true identiy and the KGB set out upon his recapture. Although certain aspects of : the' novel are in the psuedo James Bond style, including an exaggerated scene ; , concerning the disguise provided by plastic surgery. this is a good read about ,'secr'et service and British justice, and reminds us that neither i.s primarily concerned with moral issues. — R. .Choate ENTERPRISING WOMEN. By Caroline Bjrd. (W.W. Norton, $8.95) Miss Bartlett Visits Parents For Easter Time« Herald News Service .WALL LAKE — Marsha Bartlett of Sioux City spent the Easter weekend in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bartlett. Kathleen Tounget and Jennifer Stock; OmahaT were ''Easier weekend guests in the Dan Stock and Clause Jpunget homes. Saturday evening visitors in . the.home of Mrs. Ida Nissen were Mr/and Mrs. Oral Reily <• of.De'loit.and..Fred Fj-ahrn.Qf Des Moines. '•••- : - :' Commemorative books are frequently justifiably suspect. However, Enterprising Women, written by.Caroline Bird at the bicentennial suggestion of the Business and Professional Women's Foundation, stands well on its own merits. Readable, succinct chapters bring to life many highly successful but little-known careers. Starting with Mary Goddard, first authenticated printer of the Declaration of Independence and publisher of the Maryland Journal, the book chronicles the enterprise of about fifty women, finishing with today's putstanding publisher, Katharine Graham of the Washington Post. Well-known Civil War careers are recounted — those of Dorothea Dix, Annie Wittenmeyer, and Clara Barton — as well as those of other, less-known but highly successful women such as Margaret LaForge, who in 1873 was managing the R. H. Mach Company, and Ellen Demorest, who revolutionized mass access to high fashion with her invention of paper patterns for home sewing. Many will probably be surprised to read that much of the famous King Ranch empire was built by Henrietta King, who before her death at 92 added to cattle ranching the founding -qf Kingsville, running its lumber company and numerous cotton gins, developing race horses, and experimenting in animal disease control and cattle breeding. For reference, as well as for a fresh look at little acknowledged parts played by women in American enterprise, this volume serves well. — KayBucksbaum Drees Drees PRE SEASON SALE SAVE NOW ana CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING QUIET BY DESIGN jmWtt ana 5 WAYS QUIETER: 1.
