'PERFECT IN ILLINOIS Jim Ewald who already had more perfect games than any other Louisville-area bowler, added another in a Midwest Bowlers Association semipro tournament at Alton, 111., last week. That made it six 300s for Big Jim, three in leagues and three in sanctioned tourneys. He also had one in another MBA event at Mayfield, recently. At Alton, the 24-year-old Ewald shot the perfect game as part of a 1205 five-game series in the qualifying round. He wound up averaging 228 for 18 qualifying and semifinal games.

That put him in the pro-style championship match against Bob Neff of Rock Island, 111. and Neff beat him 232-222. It was the fifth time Ewald finished second (in 14 tourneys on the MBA tour). He wound up with $380 in winnings at Alton and Bob Allen, the tour- By KEN RUSH Courier-Journal It Times Stiff Writar When Louisville's bowling Hall of Fame committees meet next month to vote on 1971 selections, they'll have a total of 32 names to pick from 21 men and 11 women. Before Thursday's nominating deadline, one man and three women were added to the list.

Joe Levine, a bowler for 50 years, was the latest men's nominee. He's a former president of both the Greater Louisville Bowling Association and the Quarter Century Bowling Association. In addition, he served as chairman four times when B'nai B'rith sectional tournaments were held here (and he's trying to bring the tourney back in 1973, he says). The women's "Hall" received three additional nominees Lillian Haag, Pat Robinette and Mae Raster. Mrs.

Haag is a former president of the Louisville Women's Bowling Association, and she's now a member, of the board of directors of both city and state associations. Mrs. Robinette, a former All- nament director, figures his earnings this year at $1,005. This gives Jim another second place on the 1971 money list among the semipros. The next two MBA tourneys will be held at Springfield and Belleville, 111.

After that comes the second annual Louisville Open at Ten Pin Lanes on Aug. 7 and 8. HOOSIER 'STRIKE' Louisville's "Five Musketeers," captained by Donna McKinney, will pick up more than $500 as a result of their scoring exploits in the recent Evansville (Ind.) Classic. The team led in actual pinfall with 2899, good for $75 and trophies, and placed second in handicap with 3106, winning $428. It also is due $25 for high actual team game of 1028.

Mrs. McKinney led the fivesome with a 600 actual. Jerry Rickert added a 594, Gail Linville a 578, Loretta Vittitow a 569 and Penny O'Meara a 558. STRIKES SPARES Bill Nichel-son, 18, who went into adult bowling only last winter, chalked up his first 700 series with a 734 in the Eden Summer Classic League at Eden Lanes last week. He posted games of 248, 243 and 243 and then added a 181 for a four-game 915.

His current average is 193. Bruce Bond, another first-year bowler, achieved his first 600 with a 604 in the Trophy Mixed League at Pee Wee Reese Lanes. Approximately 325 bowlers and friends went on the 11th Frame Club's annual boat cruise aboard the Belle of Louisville last week. Steve Cruchon, editor of The Modern Bowler at Detroit, discloses that a labor dispute almost caused cancellation of the annual American Bowling Congress tournament there in March, It was settled less than six hours before the tourney's scheduled opening. The Bowling Proprietors Association of America, at its annual convention in the Bahamas recently, confirmed that Vladimir Wapensky will, become executive director of the BPAA, succeeding Howard Seehausen, who is retiring after 22 years' service.

Wapensky had been executive vice-president of the National Bowling Council. National Amateur champion Lanny Wadkins is expected to be there, and perhaps Alan Miller and Steve Melnyk two more of the country's top amateurs. A dozen or so of the players will receive their cards and become eligible to go on tour. Percentages for success are not good, but young golfers are dreamers, not gamblers. Stacey Russell of Scottsville, hopes to be one of the lucky few. The plans of the 20-year-old former high school champion could change, of course, but right now he's leaning heavily in that direction.

His everyday routine, which he follows in Scottsville, is evidence of what he plans to do. He hits 600 practice shots daily sandwiched around 18 holes of play. The arduous schedule requires nine to 10 hours to complete. Must improve putting Two Nashville businessmen have expressed an interest in sponsoring Russell. He said it would take $1,000 to attend the PGA school and another $20,000 to put him on tour for a year.

The King's Men Fischer begins match with Denmark9 Larsen A It's a rebuilt tire with the same guarantee you'd get on a new tire costing 3 times as much 11 By MERRILL DOWDEN Couritr-Journil Chen Writer This July 4 will be a landmark in the history of chess.

The other semifinal also starts today, in Moscow, between Viktor Korchnoi and former world champion Tigran Petrosyan, both of the U.S.S.R. The winners of these two matches will then clash to determine who will meet the reigning world champion, Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union, who will put his title on the line.

The guess here is that the ultimate challenger will be Fischer. Fischer, fresh from his incredible 6-0 sweep over another Russian grandmaster, Mark Taimanov, is favored to defeat the great Dane. This will be a formidable task, because Larsen is rated among the top half-dozen players in the world. The American has thrived on formidable tasks, however, and he has the best-won-lost record against masters and grandmasters of any living player. Nor is he lacking in self-confidence.

"The Soviets have been putting up roadblocks for me for years," the 28-year-old native of Brooklyn, N.Y., was quoted recently. "But I know I'm the best. I should have been world champion 10 years ago." Taimanov, 46, said Fischer undoubtedly is the best non-Soviet player he has met in 19 years of international competition as a grandmaster. He blamed his poor showing against Fischer on ill health and headaches. Well, who wouldn't get a headache after playing Fischer and getting nothing but goose eggs? ter than the treads on tires which are original equipment on most new cars.

"Jim said I have one of the best swings he has seen in years, but that I need to improve my wedge and putting," said Russell. I Russell thinks his problems can be ironed out with work. "I've been a good putter in the past," he declared, "and there's nothing basically wrong with the Jvay I stroke the ball on the greens. It just hasn't been falling.

Southern Amateur next I "When I was in" high school," he continued, "I worked a lot on my putting. But in the last couple of years I've concentrated on hitting a lot of greens and improving the rest of my game. I guess my putting and short game have suffered Jis a result." Russell, in the meantime, has his mind on the Southern Amateur which will be played at Pinehurst, N.C., July 21-24. "How I do in that tournament is going to influence me a lot in my final decision on the PGA school," he said. "I've Worked like the devil to get ready for this tournament." Finally, with the days before he has to make a final decision going rapidly by, Russell was asked whose game, among the living pros, he would like to take on tour.

"Lee Trevino's," he replied quickly. "I've seen films of his swing and his form at the, point of contact with the ball is fantastic."
