The nautilus shell is a flat spiral with the interior divided into a series of chambers filled with gas. With growth, it moves forward into a newly formed chamber and builds a wall behind which closes the cavity last occupied.JThe shell is about 8 inches in diameter. The body of the nautilus is an elongated mass of internal organs within a muscular mantle or sheath covering. Like the squid and octopus, its mouth is in the middle of the anterior end of the body and is surrounded by tentacles. The nautilus has a head with well-developed eyes'and a tongue with sharp pointed teeth. Its spiraling movement comes from muscle contractions of the mantle which draw water into the mouth and expel-it through a funnel in the spiral shell. The nautilus is found in the Pacific and Indian oceans. It feeds on fish, other mollusks and shrimp. The sexes are separate and the male has one arm modified for depositing the sperm in the mouth of the female. The eggs are laid inshore and are fastened down singly or in clusters on bottom debris. : • -..•: , . ; . '. 4-26 (Joe Schulthish of Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, wins a prize for this question.
