Not the best of friends NEW YORK — Former "Saturday Night Live" comic Norm McDonald and NBC executive Don Ohlmeyer are at each other's throats again. At Ohlmeyer's direction, NBC is refusing to run commercials for McDonald's new movie, "Dirty Work." McDonald has been attacking the network and Ohlmeyer, its West Coast president, for firing him as the "Weekend Update" anchorman on "SNL." McDonald took shots at Ohlmeyer on Tuesday night during an appearance on David Letterman's "Late Show" on CBS. "I don't understand it at all," he said. "First of all, this guy, he's best friends with O.J. Simpson. ... Now, how could he not like me?" Murray splits with husband TORONTO — Grammy-winning singer Anne Murray and her husband, Bill Langstroth, have separated after 23 years of marriage. "It was by mutual consent and there are no plans for a divorce," spokeswoman Marlene Palmer said Tuesday. "They're still the best of friends." The couple have a 20-year-old son and a 17-year-old daughter. From Wire Service Reports T ADVICE Reader credits Ann for discovery of son's cancer Dear Ann Landers: I am one of those millions of people who read your column every day but never thought I would be writing to you. I'm a mother of a son who flew home for Christmas from Indiana University. One night, while we were washing the dinner dishes, I noticed a mole on his upper inner arm. It looked like an angry mole — a mole that had a mind of its own. My husband said, "It's nothing." My instinct told me otherwise. After my $ son returned to school, I remembered a column you printed a while ago about moles that were cancerous. I phoned our son in Indiana and insisted that he see a doctor immediately. Yes, Ann, the mole was cancerous — ANN LANDERS Creators Syndicate Inc. the nasty kind. My son had quite a bit of skin removed and will follow up with a chest X-ray and a blood test. The doctor seems optimistic. The reason I am writing is to thank you. Unknowingly, you gave me the support I needed to trust my instincts. I had no support from my family. ThereT is no way on earth I can thank you enough. — A Mother in Stockton, Calif. Dear Stockton Mom: All moles that have a raised surface, irregular borders or a change in color or look "angry" and active should be seen promptly by a doctor. I pray that your son caught his in time. Meanwhile, to anyone in my reading audience who has such a mole: Will you please see a doctor immediately — preferably a dermatologist? Dear Ann Landers: A while back, you asked your readers who have been married a long time to write and tell you what it was that made their marriages last. TV TONIGHT Well, here's my contribution: My bride and I will both be 76 years old in August. Our formula is as follows: dining out and dancing twice a week — without fail. She goes on Tuesday, and I go on Thursday. — Ralph Millsaps, Statesville, N.C. Dear Ralph: Thanks for sharing the secret of your happy marriage. It's your delightful sense of humor. P.S.: I hope you cleared this with your wife. Otherwise, you will never hear the end of it. Dear Ann Landers: Once again, you have performed a valuable public service by informing readers to be wary of charitable organizations that spend most of their money raising money instead of doing good work. The National Charities Information Bureau (NCIB) will be happy to give your readers guidance in making their charitable contributions. It is a fact that virtually all major charities use outside solici- tation firms to help them raise funds. The key issue is how many cents out of each dollar actually go to the programs a donor wishes to support. To help contributors make wise decisions and to protect the charitable organizations that do good work, the NCIB will identify by name those that meet reasonable criteria and those that are and are not fully accountable to contributors whose support they seek. We would be pleased to send a copy of our current "Wise Giving Guide" to your readers, free of charge, if they call 1-800- 501-NCIB, ext. 4003. Or they can write to our offices at NCIB, 19 Union Square West, New York, N.Y. 10003-3395 ( — James Bausch, president, NCIB Dear James Bausch: Thank you for your guidance. I hope that 800 number is prepared for a jillion calls and that you have plenty of guides on hand.
