Printed Pattern NEW SPROUT 'FROM OLD ROOT : How are bananas reproduced? . * * * ANSWER: The production of the banana is unlike that of any other fruit crop: The tree is not a true tree and the trunk is not a true stem/The plant is actually a gigantic herb which grows from an underground root-stem, a rhizome. New shoots develop from the root stem at six month intervals and form the false trunk of the banana plant, which can grow from 10 to 20 feet high. The plant has a leaf covering and is crowned with a rosette of 10 to 20 oblong elliptic leaves which reach a length of 10 to 12 feet and a width of 2 feet. A large spike,-which has huge yellow clustered flowers, grows from the top of the trunk and bends downwards to become the bunch of 50 to 150 individual fruits. The bananas are grouped in clusters of 10 to 20 in the plant: Once the plant has born fruit, it dies and is replaced by another shoot or sucker which arises from the underground stem. In this manner, the life of one clump may continue for many years/ . Suckers and divisions of the underground root stem are used as planting material. These roots may be dried; stored or transported and then planted and grown again. ; 4-22 (Wanda Love of Atlanta, Georgia, wins a prize for this question.
