24 Iowa Delegates to Methodist Parley Tlm« Herald, Carroll, la. « « Wednesday, April 21, 1976 I • DES MOINES -The United Methodist Church General Conference, which meets every four years, will convene ' in Portland, Ore. April 27 for its two-week d e c i - sion-and-policy-ma king process for the denomination. lowans will play an important-part in this gathering, representing the 9,957,710 members of the denomination. The episcopal . address, which is given the first night of the conference and is a "keynote" or "state of the church" address, will be given by Bishop James S. Thomas, bishop of the Iowa Area of the, United Methodist Church. Iowa's delegation of 24 (half ministers and half laity). is one of the larger ones containing some veteran delegates who have had an appreciable affect on the decisions of the past general conferences. June Goldman of Estherville.'is, as chairperson of the Iowa delegation, one of 12 women elected by their delegates as leaders. A record number of women delegates have been elected to this conference. • The 984 delegates (including 78 from 35 overseas conferences) will be dealing with soine 12,000 .petitions, that have been submitted by TRUCKLOAD SPECIAL SAVE $40.00 2 SPEED WASHER 5 CYCLE^-FABRIC SOFTENER .DISPENSER REGULAR'*31 9 NOW ONLY HEIRES ELECTRIC CO. CARROU, IOWA members of the denomination, asking for a broad range of legislative action. The general conference is the only body 1 that can speak for the denomination, or establish official church policy. As the petitions are voted up or down or amended., the policies and priorities for the denomination for the next four years will emerge. About 3,500 of the petitions submitted deal \Vith requests regarding social principles. The delegates will decide how much time to devote to the questions raised in those petitions in-relation to world, hunger; ethnic minorities; the continuing decline in membership; women's rights; issues relating to :the ministry, including the meaning of ordination, ministerial education, and selection and assignment' of bishops and district superintendents; world and national missions; health and care and , other public sector policies; " and church finances! •-•• .Proposals that will probably .: receive- the most discussion include one suggesting a .four : year study of human sexuality designed to help the delegates •deal with the matter of homosexuality; the crisis .jn higher education which all colleges and universities share, but is particularly acute in church institutions; ways in which the church can respond to the alleviation of world hunger; and the rights of women. "• .Since money is needed to carry out most programs of the church, there will be much discussion of the multi-million dollar budgets attached to the proposals in light of present economic conditions and in the face of-declining membership. Bishop Thomas will deliver the.episcopal address on Tuesday evening, April 27. Contrary to previous general • conferences, nearly all of the time wilj be given to legislative decision. In the .past there have been several night inspirational and entertainment programs! The conference will be over when the agenda is complete, but no later than May 8. Although delegates will be- Dealing with currentv. vital; -issues, it may be noted that loS years ago, in the predecessor denominations, delegates were seeking answers to church-related colleges, race, church union or reunion, missions, and a milestone in the life of our nation. The broad issues are about the same! The debate is likely to 'be radically different in 1976 compared to 1876. They worked many hours out of their Profession to relieve me of my trouble. Also to Rev. Rau of the Methodist Church in Coon Rapids for his many visits to me and offered prayers for my recovery. And to all the nurses of the Carroll Hospital who did all they could for comfort and relief. Your kindness will never be forgotten. Carroll and vicinity should be proud of this institution. The management and staff are all devoted to their task with no complaint to their patients. I see where my small donation went to in building this hospital and it was money well spent. Again thank you all for your kindness. And to my son & his wife for their constant visits to me. F. A. Williams Coon Rapids 3-79-ltc Mine It With A Classified! Ban on Long Trucks Until Suit Decided DES MOINES. Iowa (AP) — Long trucks will remain illegal in Iowa past May 1 — the date set by the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) Commission for their legalization. DOT Director Victor Preisser said Tuesday an agreement was reached among state officials and truckers to prohibit the 65-foot, twin trailer vehicles pending the outcome of a court suit challenging their legality. The Motor Club of Iowa has filed suit in Scott County District Court in.Davenport against the commission, charging'that body with exceeding its authority in approving the longer-length •'•trucks'.",-: 1 :''.'..-, ,' .;.v...,;.,:^'~ But because there is little likelihood of a ruling by May 1, a decision was needed on which truck length law* to enforce until the court makes its decision. "This is the only sensible way to do this," said Preisser, "Nothing could be gained by forcing a confrontation at a weight station." Commissioner Allan Thorns of Dubuque. a strong backer of the big rigs, said "the best thing to do is to wait for the judge's decision. There is no reason for a big scene on the roads on May l.V- '•' Charles Ingersoll, executive vice president of the Iowa Motor Truck Association, said he is asking the group's members to abide by the decision until a court ruling is made, 1'Although we firmly believe that we have a legal right to operate these units on May 1, we are willing to cooperate with governmental agencies and the governor by awaiting the court decision." Truckers have pushed for the longer trucks for more than a decade, arguing that Iowa is the only state west of Pennsylvania along Interstate 80 that prohibits such vehicles. They claim the Iowa ban forces them to drive around the state on cross-country runs, wasting both time and fuel. But GoV. Robert Ray has opposed longer trucks on the grounds that they would contribute to already crowded conditions on the highways, create safety hazards and cause future maintenance problems. 42,000 lowans Pledge Eyes to Lions Eye Bank IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) More than 42,000 lowans have pledged their eyes after death through the Iowa Lions Eye Bank at the University of Iowa Hospitals.
