Knox and Maysville Bowling Green, Miss Van Hoose eye state golf titles Key two-day, 36-hole medal-play affair, begins at the Maysville Country Club today with 104 golfers scheduled to play the nine-hole layout. The girls' favorites are the same ones who won a year ago at Elizabeth town, Myra Van Hoose of Lexington Lafayette and Kentucky Home's team from Louisville. Miss Burns returns Jefferson County Regional champion Louise Crawford of Kentucky Home will be in the first foursome which will go off at 7:30.

Miss Van Hoose will tee off at 9. Marilyn Burns of Waggener, runner-up to Miss Van Hoose in 1970, will play in the second foursome with Linda Belle Moore of Bowling Green, Carol Lear of Lexington Tates Creek and Becka Davenport of Greenville. In regional play, Miss Van Hoose and Miss Crawford posted the lowest individual scores of five-over-par 78 and 81, respectively. Kentucky Home, Waggener and Greenville recorded the three lowest team totals of 51-, 59- and 66-over-par. Back to Bowling Green's boys team.

'Rogers hits it a mile' Rogers, a 6-foot-l, 185-pound 15-year-old, won the West Kentucky Conference Tournament and Dixie Highway Invitational this spring.

"He's strong as an ox and can hit the ball a mile," Beetem said. "Carter is a transfer from Western Kentucky University High, which closed its doors last fall," Beetem said. "He has fit in real well." Schardein, who shot 72 in the regional, won the' Bowling Green Invitational tournament. Beetem expects Bowling Green's stiff-est competition to come from Tates Creek, Madisonville and Western. "Tates Creek always has a good golf program," Beetem said.

"Madisonville has a strong 1-2 combination (Brad Fabel and Jim Riddle), but so does everybody else. The Nos. 3 and 4 men will decide this tournament. "Western will be a contender," Beetem predicted, "if Bill Foster just plays his normal game." Bowling Green's chances? "As good as anybody's," Beetem said. "All I can say about my own game is that I chase it (the ball after he hits it)," Beetem remarked recently. As golf coach at Bowling Green High School, Beetem doesn't instruct his players on the finer points of the game either. "Most of our players are country club kids who listen to their pros," Beetem explained. Beetem, however, oversees the golf program at Bowling Green High and he has "bright hopes" that his team may soon win the State Team Tournament title it lost to Covington Catholic in 1969. Bowling Green, despite the fact that its team includes a freshman, two sophomores and a junior, must be considered one of the teams to beat in the State Team Tournament opening at 8 a.m.

Meisel guided his gals to victory after victory during the regular season and then capped it all off with an easy first-place finish in the Class AA State Meet. But the Hopkinsville school lost seven standouts from that squad including stars Barbara Croney and Carolyn Arkins and" should Christian County somehow win the state title again this Saturday at Shively Sports Center in Lexington, Meisel admits it would be some kind of miracle.

"We've won the Class AA title the two years the meet's been held, but this is an off year for us," said Meisel. "We don't have the sprinters we've had in the past (i.e., Misses Croney and Arkins) and we've only got two girls back who saw a lot of competition last season." Tilghman rated No. 1 The listings below were compiled by taking the five best performances from last week's eight girls' Class AA regionals and awarding points on a 6-4-3-2-1 basis. The figures rate Christian County the fourth best team in the state meet with 21 points, while Paducah Tilghman ranks can never tell who'll do well on a given day. "Also, you can't always tell that much from the times in the regionals.

I'm pretty sure Franklin County didn't go all out in theirs and I'm expecting them to make a good showing in the state meet." (AP) The North-South championship outboard boat races will be held Saturday and Sunday at Lake Cumberland, the second straight year the races were awarded to the Somerset area.
