10 THE OTTAWA HERALD Thursday, Nov. 9, 1961 There's more value, more good-eating meat in... * © 1961, tfinfl Features Syndicate, Inc., World tiflhls rwervtd. "It's a surprise for my husband — he thinks he's getting golf clubs." Wants More Money Spent On Educational Research By G. K. HODENFIELD AP Education Writer BALTIMORE (AP)-"If this country would apply the same brainpower and money to the problems of eiucation as it does to agriculture, there would be a bumper crop of national benefits." So says Dean Lindley J. Stiles of the University of Wisconsin, who believes the real frontiers of education have not yet even been approached. Stiles told the Council of Chief State School Officers Wednesday that properly supported, education can become the same kind of scientific process that farming is today. The federal government now spends $160 million dollars a year on agricultural research, but only about $5 million on research in education, Stiles said. He urged the state superintend ents and commissioners of education, holding their annual three day meeting here, to support a proposal that the federal govern' ment appropriate $75-million to SlOO-million dollars a year for ed ucational research. Stiles said later, in an inter view, "Farmers used to farm ac cording to the almanac, folklore and trial and error. That is th ay too many of our schools are ducating youngsters today. It is igh time we consider the cul- ivation of the mind just as im- ortant as the cultivation of the oil." Ike In Active Political Role , HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP)-Former President Dwight D. Eisen- lower will play an active but not dominant role in Pennsylvania's 1962 gubernatorial and senatorial campaigns, says Republican State Chairman George I. Bloom. The GOP leader said Eisenhower assured him at a meeting in Gettysburg Wednesday that he will not attempt to dictate the choice of the party's candidates.
